Which Is The Best Bittorrent Client?

<div class="IPBDescription">So many to choose from...</div> DISCLAIMER: This thread neither supports, advocates or encourages the sharing of illicit materials and exists ONLY to discuss Peer to Peer sharing clients, not the files said clients may or may not share. If you choose to share pirated materials, that is and remains your own business and I ask that you do not bring that to this thread, should you do so this thread will most likely be locked so I ask, as a favor to me, don't do it.

Thank you,

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, let me just start this by saying that I use bittorrent extensively. Whenever files are offered for download via Bittorrent, I usually take that option, even if it would be faster to use a direct download, I find it satisfying to help seed files to other people. However, recently I realized that the client I use (<a href='http://www.shareaza.com/' target='_blank'>Shareaza</a>) does NOT advocate resuming a set of files you already have a few of. Sure it can pause and resume downloads within itself, but this is if and only if you were downloading the file from the beginning through shareaza. This means, if I were downloading a set of files blank01 blank02 and blank03,
if I already had the complete blank01 and it was the exact same file (same name-same size) as the one that was provided in the tracker, shareaza would STILL try to redownload the file from everyone providing it. This is because shareaza downloads random pieces of the ENTIRE set of files at the same time from different peers. So the set of files is counted as one single file, and after you have the whole thing, <i>only then does it bother to sort out which bits of data go where.</i> At least, that is how it works in so far as I have been able to understand it.

So since I had a bunch of files in a set already, I went ahead and got <a href='http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html' target='_blank'>the Original Bittorrent Client</a> to download the set of files with. Sure enough, it recognized the files I already had and continued downloading the files from there.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Long story short, I need a Bittorrent Client that can do all the things Shareaza can do, and still do all the things the original Bittorrent Client could do; <b>most importantly- detect what files out of a set that you already have.</b> If however you know of a client that does all that and more; i.e. what you would consider logically <i>the best bittorrent client available</i> please tell me. But remember those few requirements of mine.

If you need a basic list of what shareaza can do that I want in another client; look no further than <a href='http://www.shareaza.com/?id=tour' target='_blank'>their own website's feature list.</a>

As a pure bittorrent client, without the eDonkey and Gnuttella search stuff, I use BitTornado, formerly Shad0w's Experimental BT Client. Its sleek, clean and effective. It's not a kazaa look-alike, just the download client. It doesn't have any search stuff at all in the client, but you can just use sites like <span style='color:red'>*NUKED.*</span> (note: I use this to get linux ISOs, since they're often posted). All the client does is open a torrent, get the files, then remain as a seed until closed. It DOES support the resuming of files, and you can view the files (if they are say audio or video files <- legal of course) while its downloading, assuming that file is done. IMHO its the best, since it does everything I need it to, without all the bloat that is kazaa (and from the looks of it shareaza). I have a perfectly good media player already, and a perfectly good method of searching.

However, the remote web-control feature of shareaza is intriguing, as is the open-sourcyness of it. IIRC bittornado is also GPL or something similar. In short, I don't know of any clients that do everything shareaza does, but bittornado does what it does better than any other ones I've seen...

<span style='color:red'>Sites with illegal content on them, regardless of if they also have legal content, are not for these forums. -Talesin</span>

So BitTornado will detect files that I already have as long as the tracker recognizes them, even if they are complete? I don't see it mentioning that on the site. I'm gonna go ahead and google ABC now and check that one as well.

Ahh so ABC is based on Bittornado. I think I am gonna give this one a try. I hope to God that it picks up where the original Bittorrent Client left off, because Shareaza supremely dissapointed me when it couldn't detect files like that.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

ABC has a nice interface, but it's still quite buggy and is missing a few features, I'd stick with BitTornado until ABC is finished.

ABC's my favorite, although my friend is convinced it's a resource hog. I disagree, but he still says it costs him a few frams per second in his games. Me, I see no difference, and our systems are about the same. I've got a gig of ram though.

When you play graphics-intensive games then yes, ABC can be a resource hog. I learned it the hard way when playing GCII earlier <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Go for ABC. Works like Shareza and can continue files. Link is in MrMojo's post (dammit, I wanted to link it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Using your internet connection while downloading some torrent is not advisable, especially if the speed is any good and you want it to stay that way.

Hahaha, your friend must have a very good PC, I suggest him to use another pc for the dowloading if he wants to Download & Game @ the same time...

I've used ABC for quite some time now, its pretty good, but uses up quite some resources and has some annoying bugs, otherwise its good.

    I might try Bit Tornado actually... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I too used to use ABC until i found out that the author discontinued updates to it, meaning that it'll soon be incompatable.

Azeurus is the one i use now.

Azeurus WILL resume your old torrents when you open the torrent in Azeurus and save it IN THE SAME FOLDER as the incomplete files.

This stopped me dead. If this is the case, I want no part of ABC. I already downloaded it, but the hell if I am going to start using ABC just after the guy terminates his own project. Are you sure about this though? Maybe I am blind but I didn't see this on his site anywhere. Though it's unsurprising at best, it seemed like a sort of side project.

I saw some of the people seeding to me using this program back when I used shareaza and it identified other people's clients. It did in fact make me curious, and I already looked it up when I googled BT clients, the interface isn't too bad either, but it still gives all the necessary information.

Thanks for not entirely forgetting my largest reason for getting another client. ABC does support this as well, but it is always nice to know ahead of time i.e. BEFORE I download the client, that it fulfills this.

    -------------------------------------
BTW Torrent Storm seems to hate my computer and gives me horrible download speeds, and yet mysteriously uploads fine. Perhaps I need to tweak it, I might run it again when I get another chance.

THE best Torrent client around is <a href='http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/index.phtml' target='_blank'>BURST!</a>.
  • TransmissionTransmission Join Date: 2003-03-12 Member: 14456Members
Azureus is good for batch torrents since you can choose to download specific files in the batch, and not all of them, or to seed only specific files as well. Usually you have to download the whole batch in order which can be a pain if you want only 1 file.

For non-batch torrents, I like Bittornado. Nice interface, simple, and gets the job done.

I've tried burst, but while it did have cool features, it just didn't sit well with me. It's probably better than Bittornado, but the difference is minimal.

In choosing any client, it mostly goes down to personal choice.

As an avid fansub downloader (www.animesuki.com - perfectly legal) I tried a few BT clients and I found the experimental/Bittornado client the best. It doesn't freak out and download at an extremely small speed like torrentstorm, and it's perfectly playable in the background, if there's not many torrents open. I recommend Bittornado +++

I did use ABC but now use Azureus. ABC has one fatal bug that **** me off so much i deleted it.

Basically, if you group select files in your list and hit "remove torrent" or "remove torrent and files", it has a habit of ignoring which torrents you select and cancelling / deleting ones at will. I lost about 1.5gb of a torrent i was downloading which took me forever, all because ABC sucks.

Burst is nice, it is lightweight and small, Azureus is a bit of a resource user, but it is worth it, azureus has a thousand options and everything runs smoothly. its got all kinds of smart rulesets for when to start and stop seeding on finished files, so you never have to worry about it doing stupid things!

the newer edition even has automatic updating so youll never be left behind.

You know not all of Java is slow... depends on what methods you call. And what is slow, you have to build yourself.
