Well since only cshark has suggested it ill say again:
FF7, Excellent gameplay, pick it up for the PSX or PC price should be low. FF8, Also great gameplay with one wacked out plot, FFX/FFX-2, FFX, Has alot more replay value then the newer FFX-2.
Then you get into the realms of other PC RPGs,
NWN+Expansions, Excellent gameplay huge replay factor, Features massive amounts of extra free mods to download with huge mutiplayer gameplay. Diablo 2, Yes someone had to suggest it, Hack and slash but fun.
As CMeast said Chrono tigger and Chrono cross both great games.
And last but not least my fav FM3 (Front Mission 3) Old PSX game featured mechs and 2 diffrent playable routes, good luck finding it anywhere in europe tho.

Update: I've managed to get a hold of Deus Ex 2 (I'm about halfway done, I think) and Morrowind. I'm going to borrow Planescape and System Shock 2 when I'm done with Deus Ex 2.
Deus Ex 2 is excellent. RPG mainly, but FPS elements as well. The layout of the areas could be better, and it's all fairly linear, but other than that... Nice storyline and everything so far. And the graphics are not bad either.
Morrowind, I can only describe with one word: horrible. No, wait, maybe two words: completely horrible. Really, I didn't endure it for long, granted, but I spent about 60% of the time reading and clicking on dialogue options that really didn't have a point, another 30% running around (damn, could you be any slower?) and the remaining 10% trying to figure out where the hell I was. All the NPCs had a name, so you had no way of telling who were actually good for something, meaning you have to talk to pretty much everyone. And as if it's any help, they all look the same and have the same names. There are doors everywhere, but 95% of them are locked and probably cannot be openened at all because the houses belong to some generic NPC that you've probably run into on the street and wasted a good 15 min with, going through all of the millions of dialogue selections possible, just to find out that this NPC knows absolutely nothing about anything and is there simply to distract your attention (damn, that was a long sentance). Oh, and then we have the interface. It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to swing the damned sword for crying out loud! Not that it mattered of course, because a small rat managed to kill me anyway. A bloody rat killing a fighter in chainmail. The scenery was not even that interesting. Most of the time, I couldn't see the hand in front of me, even with a burning torch and highest gamma, and what I could see was not a pretty sight. I don't even want to talk about the choice of faces for your character. It's like the devs sat down and said "alright guys, let's make these faces as horrible as we possibly can". I mean, come on. I admit I'm not really sure what and elf looks like, but I'm quite sure they do *not* look like that. They looked like trolls for crying out loud! Actually, I've seen more attractive trolls in other games. The elves in Morrowind would be able to scare a troll (or at least make it throw up). You might think the faces for the elves were rock bottom, but oh no. Plenty of the other races had already hit rock bottom and started digging. By the time I came to my senses and shut down the game, I considered the possibilities of a lawsuit against the devs for making me waste many precious minutes of my life on their retail computer virus. Whoever they are, they should be hung from a tree, shot, gutted and run over by a car.

The whole "I don't know what I'm doing immediately!" think was cool in Morrowind. I think the Xbox version is a bit smoother for just playing the storyline (but there are some major problems with it...like no where to sell your expensive loot, no way to tell how much you're injuring the enemies...and some pathing bugs (along with others)).
Off the top of my head: You get off the ship, you talk to the guard in the room before you leave the dockhouse - he sends you to Casus (Caius?....something like that) in Balmora, where he'll send you to the warrior guild in Balmora which will send you to a temple place near the city which has a Dwemer cube in it....I forget where it goes exactly from there (back to Casus and then to somewhere else I think), but that game is more for the exploration and stuff.
It's just to blatantly easy, that's the problem...that and the PC crashing bugs.
Anyways: I vote Fallout 2 (you might want to do a little bit of 1 first, but 2 is more fun...to me, anyway); System Shock 2 is okay (doesn't seem to work on my XP though, and since then I've misplaced the disc)...I couldn't get the graphics upgrades (one for the character models, one for textures) to work...which would make it so much nicer.
It's got atmosphere, and the sound goes along nice (level design is excellent too), but the character models take out the immersion for me - I even tried...in the dark, with headphones...Nice game, but nothing special).
In some sense of the word, Freelancer is an RPG...it's okay for a bit of friend (it's awesome on a LAN with a bunch of people though). More of a space combat game...but it's got a bit of RPG in there.
I'm pretty light on the PC RPGs...really.
FF8 is a pain though, I'd go with 7 or 9 (or to the nice SNES ones). The Draw system annoys the hell out of me...I'm replaying it right now...and I cringe every time I have to draw magic out of an enemy.
...that and the retarded "Hey, let's not let the player feel any sort of character progression - let's have the enemies level up so they stay just as hard!" Along with the retarded SeeD paycheck system...
I better stop now...suffice it to say, FF8 has a nice story, it's just a swift kick between the legs in implementation.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->if you want speedy action, RPGs arent always the way to go if you want to move faster, run and/or increase your athletics skill and/or put points in your speed attribute when you levelup<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Oh, I don't mind a calm pace. I do however, mind a pace that is based on minute after minute of running back and forth because your character is so damn slow, you'll feel like dragging him out of the screen and beating the crap out of him. Really, when a game tend to send you running back and forth across town, you would at least expect it to allow you to get there in an acceptable amount of time. Oh, and I did increase those skills. I eventually got bored and cheated. I still ran roughly as fast as a dead snail.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->EVERYTHING that is locked can be unlocked, and for all you know, that "generic NPC" has a full suit of magic armor in his house (hasnt happened to me yet, tho)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Meaning you spend plenty of time opening doors that are there for cosmetics, simply because you might miss that one important door that actually *is* important. Just like you need to talk to people because one of them just might have a side-quest or tip for you.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->if you payed attention, it explained combat before you left the first building<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Oh, I was. Problem being, the night didn't end. For half an hour. The water did look great during the approximately 2 minutes of daylight I had. The rest of the time, I either didn't see it, or I was in it (all times, except once when I decided to drown myself, by accident).
I also enjoyed being arrested for clicking on someones bed by accident. Sheesh, people sure are stingy in this game.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Here's a pic of my character, you see 2 mods "plugins", better bodies and the beauty pack <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

thinking about it, you DO go too damn slow, but unless you whip up a mod, not much will fix that
eh, the few doors i tried didnt have much in them, but i DID find money
for combat stuff: after you have set up your character at the one robed guy and go to leave, it tells you to grab that dagger. and equip it. then it says to press "f" to ready you weapon, and use your mouse button to attack.
if you get tired of night, rest (t by default) yeah, people dont like it if they see you trying to sleep in their bed (that got me kicked out of the theives guild once <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
Oh, I could ready the weapon and everything alright. It was the swinging part that got me. As it turned out, after checking my control layout three times, the correct button to swing it was "E". God knows why, but it was. And like I said, it didn't really matter in the end. Even with daedric equipment (armor, leggings, shield, longsword, the lot) and 90 strength (to be able to carry that stuff), a rat managed to kill me. Eventually, I did manage to kill the rat. Of course, when I did, it turned out that the lady (lacking a better word. "Transsexual" comes to mind) that mentioned that she (?) had a problem with rats had absolutely no intention of offering me a quest. It was just some general information that her (?) house was infested with rats and she wanted someone to do something about it.

Race bonusses doesnt affect lvl, if you have atletic as primary/secondary you'll actually have a harder time leveling (and reaching the cap quicker) but alot of people consider having it as primary/secondary as cheap and destructing..

Right, so I gave Morrowind another try. It's not great, but I'm willing to admit that it's not that bad (except the spell interface. I hate it). After replacing pretty much the entire game, I no longer feel the need to laugh or throw up at the sight of NPCs.
Now there's just one problem. The game crash every 10 minutes or so. I've tried reinstalling and running without mods, but it crashed anyway. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it just shut down the game and return to the desktop. Anyone know what that's about?

I mean spell selection and spell feedback. Selecting spells is just a pain, and if it wasn't for the quick selection (of which 3 are taken by melee weapon, lockpick and that hand-to-hand thingy), I'd cry. Even with it though, you are fairly limited and there are a lot of spells you might want to use in combat. When you actually managed to select the correct spell and cast it, I can't see any way of knowing whether you hit the enemy or not.

either i got a lucky morrowind session in, or i found a way to prevent PC crashes.
run it in windowed mode
as for knowing if a spell hit, if its an aggressive spell, the enemies health bar will go down (PC only from what ive heard) otherwise, i have no clue. the only good thing about spell selection is that the game is paused while you do it

If you are blind and deaf, you might have trouble knowing if your spell hit, but otherwise, there are very obvious aural and visual indicators for a successful hit.
As for speed, I found the boots of blinding speed about 2 hours after I started playing, and those fixed my speed problems right up. However, if you are already having brightness problems (bad monitor/video card?) I suggest you stay away from those. The pace is fine as it is as long as you don't completely gimp your speed stat.

unless you were wandering around at night, i dont understand your visibility problem (and that gamma upping could explain the "not a pretty sight")
also, the water in this game is AWESOME (on my system anyway)
you DO have a point with the faces though
:edit:
lol epidemic, personality 20?

Meaning you spend plenty of time opening doors that are there for cosmetics, simply because you might miss that one important door that actually *is* important. Just like you need to talk to people because one of them just might have a side-quest or tip for you.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->if you payed attention, it explained combat before you left the first building<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I did pay attention. Either, I missed that particular information, or it was so fussy I didn't understand it.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Here's a pic of my character, you see 2 mods "plugins", better bodies and the beauty pack <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Whoa, that's a pretty damn big difference from the original models. It's like comparing a piece of coal to a diamond. A really, really ugly piece of coal.
eh, the few doors i tried didnt have much in them, but i DID find money
for combat stuff:
after you have set up your character at the one robed guy and go to leave, it tells you to grab that dagger. and equip it. then it says to press "f" to ready you weapon, and use your mouse button to attack.
if you get tired of night, rest (t by default)
yeah, people dont like it if they see you trying to sleep in their bed (that got me kicked out of the theives guild once <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
and i need to get the better model mod
Eventually, I did manage to kill the rat. Of course, when I did, it turned out that the lady (lacking a better word. "Transsexual" comes to mind) that mentioned that she (?) had a problem with rats had absolutely no intention of offering me a quest. It was just some general information that her (?) house was infested with rats and she wanted someone to do something about it.

May I take the chance to recommend two others you see in the pic?

You don't know about the TMM? He's the man to go to for you high-priced loot sales. Also, having played both versions, the PC is way better. Much more detail and less bugs.
Try it <i>without</i> cheating first, ok? ;P
If you really are having trouble getting started I have a good character to start with, and know some hints to help you early on. PM me for them.

take it easy mech, quo doesnt like how slow you run, so he whipped up a speed mod
:edit:
dling those mods for better looking stuff
[Whisper] <i>I was kidding!</i> [/Whisper]
However, you shoot yourself in the foot by doing that. +50 to your speed = 5 levels, if athletics is one of your primary/secondary atributes.
[edit] You made that ion-frigate sig in paint? Impressive...
thats what he meant epidemic, you lose 5 levels from that thing (unless you know ways around that levelcap <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
@mech
my sig is a screenie of my Ion Cannon Frigate (check around in mapping forum, its prolly 2nd/3rd page by now)

Now there's just one problem. The game crash every 10 minutes or so. I've tried reinstalling and running without mods, but it crashed anyway. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it just shut down the game and return to the desktop. Anyone know what that's about?
The WoD universe owns, owns, <i>owns</i>.
You'll get a lot more out of the game if you read up some of the books, but it's not a necessity.

what aspect of the spell infterface? (if its spell selection, im with you)
as for the crashes, i get them too (and morrowind has crashed on every PC ive seen it on, so it MAY be game instability)
It crashes on the XboX as well. My money is on an instability.
Selecting spells is just a pain, and if it wasn't for the quick selection (of which 3 are taken by melee weapon, lockpick and that hand-to-hand thingy), I'd cry. Even with it though, you are fairly limited and there are a lot of spells you might want to use in combat.
When you actually managed to select the correct spell and cast it, I can't see any way of knowing whether you hit the enemy or not.
run it in windowed mode
as for knowing if a spell hit, if its an aggressive spell, the enemies health bar will go down (PC only from what ive heard) otherwise, i have no clue.
the only good thing about spell selection is that the game is paused while you do it
As for speed, I found the boots of blinding speed about 2 hours after I started playing, and those fixed my speed problems right up. However, if you are already having brightness problems (bad monitor/video card?) I suggest you stay away from those. The pace is fine as it is as long as you don't completely gimp your speed stat.
Yeah Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic is awsome. I normally hate RPGs but I found this game to be quality
