    start > run > cmd

    D: [or whatever drive]

    cd directory

    del "file 1.avi"

if that doesnt work, boot up in safe mode and delete it.

Eh, use taskmanager to make sure no application is using it, then push delete? I know, I know, my advice rocks <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

    Depends which OS you're using.

In 2000, you can press F8 at a certain point during start-up.

Im pretty sure there is some button you press on startup, but it never works for me so I just do this.
Restart the computer, and when windows starts to load hit the hard restart button on the computer (Usually next to the power button, and smaller). Then let it boot all the way up and you should get some kind of screen that notifies you that it wasn't able to boot up blah blah blah, then just select start in safe mode and: there you go!.

Ok.. to start up in safe mode in 98/95/ME.. push and hold F8 after the bios screen loads. If you have NT/XP/2K... it is hold F2 after the bios starts up. It will bring up a screen to select either MS-Dos mode or Safe mode, obviously you will choose safe mode... becareful you don't want to delete anything important.. since system restore is not active if you mess up, re-install windows. :-)

Or hop into Windows Help and search for "safe mode"... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Should be cake to delete it either from DOS or in Safe Mode.

While we're on the subject, how does one boot in MS-DOS mode? The only way I've found out how is to put in my old windows 98 startup disk and say 'boot from CD' (which naturally fails, and dumps me in DOS).

Just go on ur file-sharing program. Goto the list of files they have that you share, right-click the file, and click delete. That fixed it for me.

I've had this problem before and I fixed it with good old fashioned checkdisk or chkdisk or whatever.

That feature is only available on the 9X series up to WinME (I believe).

The only other way is to boot from either a floppy or a cd that has a DOS environment.
