Some people around here, I tell you...     There is an important difference between fear and caution. The fact that bystanders felt safe enough to watch what was happening, despite the fact that the explosives may conceivably have triggered a much larger bomb, indicates that the general public has faith in the effectiveness of our cautious police force. That's how I think of it, anyway.

    If there is something interesting then people will watch it. So many people just sit around and watch after a car crash and I guarentee they aren't watching because it makes them feel safer, that our ambulances and fireservices are so efficient. People like watching drama's.

    I'm not saying that the watching makes them feel safer. What I mean is that, if they had feared that the authorities didn't have it under control, they probably wouldn't have stood and watched, as they could've been hurt.

    Nobody was screaming or running. That was my whole point. There was no panic associated with this incident. Somebody thought what happened was suspicious, reported it to the police, and the police came to check it out. That is caution, not fear.

    This same scenario played out 3 times so far over here in Omaha next to the city hall and county courthouse. Are Nebraskans any different than the rest of the nation? Are we more paranoid? I mean, come on, packages are generally thrown into trashcans. I see trash thrown away everyday, but that doesn't prompt me to call the police, unless it's a person.
