I think anything higher than cg_glow_steps 1 is unnecessary-- too much of a frame hit for lower end PCs, and there's not really an extreme difference betwen 1 and 4.

Ok, several people have asked so i've taken screenshots with extreme settings. Detailed textures are on, antialiasing set to 6x, antrisopic filtering is set to 16x and cg_blur_steps is on 10. First, the marine start in ecplise.

That last screen is from eclipse hive on ns_eclipse. Satcomm is next to chemical on ns_tanith <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's totally black ingame except there's a bit of glow where lights should be. You can see properly if you set cg_blur_steps to 0. Here's a picture that shows what I mean. Each of these is what I see with cg_blur_steps set to 4 overlayed on what I see with it set to zero with about an 80% transparancy. (Photoshop for the win).

Means that your card doesn't support the effect. Sorry, but thems the breaks. Mine doesn't either, but I still think it looks amazing and should be put it to make the experience of those with adequate hardware better.

That, or you just installed it wrong.

It could be the latter. I think it may be talking about the files in <span style='color:yellow'>cgprograms</span> that are named <span style='color:yellow'>glow_blah_vp.cg</span> (blah being glow, combine, or darken). If those files are installed wrong, then it might give you that error.

Otherwise, try the non-pixel shader-requiring glow mod if you really, really want to see it. But I've heard its an FPS nightmare.

Look at the fps in the screenshots. not one above 30.

    Holy hell!

I just watched that video windel linked and I almost made the wee-wee of joy in my pants. I usually get fairly bad fps, but even if I could get SOME of that effect, like level 2, wihout the game being unplayable that would be worth it.

Nobody can deny that it looks incredible, andif it'seasy to implement, theres no reason that it shouldn't be. Don't like it? Simply turn it off. But for those of us that enjoy a game with atmosphere, please put this in the game.

How do I show my FPS again?
  • ForlornForlorn Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2634Banned
    net_graph 3

    OR

    cl_showfps 1

If you have a crappy computer I recommend cl_showfps 1, as it's less resource intensive.

Also, from my experience cl_showfps is more accurate to what your fps is. It shows what your machine is putting out.

also, note that cg_blur_steps is on 10, anistropic filtering, FSAA, and deatil textures are ALL ON in those screenshots.

up till now, I haven't really heard a real good argument why this shouldn't be put in.

put this in but put a button so you can turn it off if you have a 1337 computer

It is talking about those files.

However, if your card doesn't support the effect, it'll give the same error (if not an extremely similar one)

and the non-pixel shader version is *really* bad....grainy, and your FPS crawls like a slug through molasses.

keep in mind that most of this is tweakable code-wise. If this was to be coded into NS, I'm sure it wouldn't be just a copy-paste job; rather, whoever's coding would put his own ideas and tweaks in there, possibly (probably, knowing the talent of the coding team) reducing the performance hit. This could be done by removing glow effects on certain things... etc. i'm guessing here, but you get the point - what we see in the glow-mod is the basic, technology release version of the mod... it definitely can be refined.

Meh, i think i can increase image quality by turning the omega driver slider to max but it'd be impossible to move.

I'd like to mention I've posted that it's possible to do this in NS (as in, play NS with the effect) in the sister-thread in General Discussion:

    <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=73408' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...showtopic=73408</a>

Basically what is required is for somebody to port the shader programs from Cg to the language used by ATI's SMARTSHADER Effects feature, or write a shader program that achieves a similar effect.

The effect can then be used in-game while playing, though only on ATI cards.

You can get the program to change the current SMARTSHADER (ATI's control panel only allows the built-in shaders) here: <a href='http://www.beyond3d.com/misc/atiss/index.php?p=4' target='_blank'>http://www.beyond3d.com/misc/atiss/index.php?p=4</a>

However, it only works with Cat 4.3, until ATI either releases an updated version for 4.6, or builds it right into a future driver release.

Yes, the restrictions (ATI only, Cat 4.2 or 4.3 only) are annoying, but it's a way to get the effect without Flayra adding support for it.

For those who missed it, Flayra posted in the general discussion mirror of this thread. He likes it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

No, but here's why & what I'd be willing to agree with <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=51&t=81861&st=6' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...51&t=81861&st=6</a>

Very cool idea, but uber-blurriness is not wanted. I don't want to feel like I need glasses while I play NS and that it hurts my eyes when I play for hours. (please click link)
