Go Get A Radeon 9800 Xt

Seriously. Its a great card. But what I also enjoy is the software suite.

It has a fileplayer that lets you watch stuff in a semi-transparent window that goes above all other windows. I'm watching Seinfeld as I write this.

Needless to say, "winar".

Nothing wrong with that... nVidia seems to have fallen into the mid-range slot nicely. They can't handle the high-end, and the low end/OEM markets are pretty much ATi, Intel and S3 dominated. And ATi's midrange stuff is priced a bit higher, even if it does give better performance and image quality.

That means, the high-end must be... *gasp*...

Talesin is starting a hardware company! Oh nos! He will be starting with the 'Talex0r 2999' (now where did that '1' go...)!

Given that my computer still chugs along at meh FPS, I don't bother to recommend my 9800 Pro. I'm convinced it's either an overheating issue or a power supply issue, but I'm too lazy to actually check, so I trust my faith and blame John Romero's haircut.

    But I digress.

Actually, its probably your motherboard. I have that issue, too. I need to do a few more upgrades.

Your motherboard may only have a 4x AGP slot instead of an 8x, so your computer can't use the card to its full potential.

Don't the 9800's have horrendous heating problems?

if you attempt insane overclocks on the stock cooler, yeah.

It had better not, with its two fans and a heat-sink that covers most of the card...

But, even if it does begin to over-heat, fear not! SmartDoctor (a utility bundled with the drivers) monitors the card's voltage, temperature, and fan status. It has systems built in that will even (supposedly) end all crashes caused by video cards.

$230 for an XT? You sure you don't have a 9800 Pro?

    It is, indeed, an XT.

Oh, and another good thing about the card: Free copy of HL^2!

Though ATi withdrew their support, they must honor their offer. I don't think you can get a mail-order copy, but you can probably use the "Activation Code" to get a copy through Steam.
