Drawing Tablets

Yeah, I got a few issues about drawing tablets here. Some of you have them, and I want to know if you have any recommendations about manufacturers and types? Pros and cons of tablets and so on. Im in a pretty beginner stage in drawing but I've always wanted one hence I suck with pencil and eraser.. pixels are so much easier What sizes do you recommend in my case? I've been thinking of a regular A4 size but it's rather big and expensive in multiple cases. Are smaller ones as useful? Do I really want one since I already have a good mouse and pretty steady hand with it. Wacom seems to be the one brought up often, are they good stuff?

Thanks in advance ^_^

My brother has a graphics tablet, the one he has (don't remember the name of it..) is a pretty good one. He says it allows him to cheat at online pictionary.

They are good though, better than MS Paint.

I have a small 6x4" Wacom Gaphire and it suits me well enough. You really don't need a big A4 thing unless you're a total graphics junkie or a pro. You may want one, but you don't need one. My Graphire cost around $100, and I think that's still pretty standard for tablets at that size.

Of course go with Wacom, but get whatever size you can comfortably afford and fit on your desk. No sense in going overboard, or really buying one at all. Seriously, just draw the thing and scan it.

If you're gonna spend money on a tablet, get a wacom. The investment is worth it. They're a lot sturdier and much more reliable than other models. If you're going for the cheapest one available, get a graphire. They're suitable for anyone not doing anything totally serious (ie. professional graphics work). If you are however, the intuos series is a safe bet. I have the smallest available size of the intuos series, hasn't done me wrong yet.

    They make good mousemats, too.

It just hit me, the A4 size would be enourmous.. I checked "A4" size from Photoshop... waaaay over the size Im gonna need, I usually don't make anything 900x900px larger (except for website templates?) And the desk space wouldn't be a problem, just got a new office desk which is like huge... I have my dsl box, monitor all that stuff on it, plus the printer and scanner on the side of it, and there's still like 50cm x 70cm area of non-used steady space... for homework or drawing or such.. Back to the topic though, I suppose Im going with wacom then.

I've been thinking about this one: http://www.oneanimation.net/info.asp?product=1130

I had one of those during a brief stupid phase I had when I thought I might learn to draw. Hah.

Technically though the Wacom pad pwns. You could even play Quake with the stylus. Sorta. :)

As everyone pointed out, you're going to want a wacom. The graphire line is very affordable and comes with a bunch of good features, but those models (Graphire 2 or 3) are only A6. For most of the stuff you're going to do, I'd say that's fine. The main advantage of bigger sizes is that you can slide larger sheets of paper under the transparent overlay thingy. There's also an Intuos A6 but that will boost the price a little high, basically just has more pressure levels (1024 instead of 512 IIRC) and better resolution. If you're on a budget the Volito line also exists but I have no experience with those... I think they are basically one level under the Graphire and thus have half the resolution and pressure levels - for half the price.
