Help ?
My computer uses XP Home edition first of it was working fine at 11 this morning then i switched it on at 3 it loaded up normally but i had no access to the internet or MSN then when i restarted the comp this page keeps coming up with some options saying there has been a error as Windows didnt shut down normally:
1) Safe mode- Works
2) Safe mode + networking- Doesn't work
3) Last configuration- Doesnt work
4) Start windows normally- Doesnt work

If i choose option 3 or 4 then the screen changes so it shows the windows XP loading screen with the little green bar sliding across, eventually this bar freezes and stops working.
If i choose 2 then the screen is filled with writing then all the lights on the mouse and keyboard switch of and nothing happens.
I can go into safe mod which works fine, i tryed using system restore thing but when it finishes doing all that and comes back to the XP loading screen again the green bar stops moving. Any ideas what i should do?

Just finished defragging and ran a virus scan, no viruses were found so i restarted but now the problem has came back so i'll probably re-install XP, thanx for all your help.

Have you tryed using your windows XP disk to do a recovery?

Also for the PC to stop working between 11-3 something most of gone wrong, a virus? system crash? even installing new software.

Yeah.. if the system restore can not fix it.. you will probably have to do a recovery disk or format.

Fyi: I do not know alot about computers but when everything fails, a format always works. ;-) (Unless HD is borked)

    Blame it on the nanites...

As for how to fix it, like the others said, use the XP CD to run recovery, if not, reformat...

Not before you do a "scanreg /fix" in the recovery console.

If it boots into safe mode with no problem, then something with the system file and/or drivers might be borked. Trying looking at the hardware manager to see. If not, then the recovery tool with XP would probably healp for any corrupted/borked windows files/folders. If that doesn't work still, then if you can, boot into safe mode and if your CD burner still works, try to see if you can safe any important information to disk then do a format.

Is there any other error messages you can provide to figure out the problem or does it say that windows didn't shut down properly? If you manage the disk recovery, then do a scandisk for any bad sectors ASAP just in case. If there are bad sectors, then HOPEFULLY Windows will see them and salvage what information it can from them and label them as useless. That may have been a problem.

But formating of Windows does usually work, and I truthfully would recommend that everyone format their hard drive around once a year. I personally believe that it is a good thing to do because you start with a clean disk, your old information and usually a more stable system and faster. I always noticed with Win2k that if I formated it, it would work really good for a couple of months before slowing down to a more moderate pace. Then it will eventually get really slow.

Just switched the computer on this morning and it loaded fine but i don't seem to be getting any internet access. Both the green lights are on at the back showing the network card is fine and that the cable works but no error messages are appearing.

Have you tried calling your ISP? Just a thought.
