<div class="IPBDescription">brilliant or a total flop?</div> I was tinkering on how to make a map of company I am working for on a website. I was trying to stay away from the usual "put one big map picture there and let the user figure it out themselves". I was trying to go for something innovating yet would not require "l33t plugins like Flash etc".

Then I came up with this idea. Go and buy Sim City 4. Recreate the area my company is at (UCL @ Central London) and take screenshots of my city. And I can get my company to go and reimburse me for the game. And heck I can be making the city while I am at work. It be really be like being paid to play a game I think. ;p

I do realize some limitations. Gonna take ages for me to get use to the building editor to recreate the buildings proper. And it mite not be "geographically" correct.

I say do it in Bryce instead.. it will be much easier to get it down and with the basic rendering you could add all the little details correctly with photoshop/paint :-)

And wouldn't taking a screenshot of the game and posting it on a website infringe on copyrights?

Well people post screenshots all the time. It might be illegal, but I don't think Maxis (or EA, still mad they bought Maxis out) would get angry as long as you gave them due credit.

How on earth does a screenshot fall under any copyright law WHATSOEVER? That's like saying you can use Microsoft Word, it's just illegal to print anything made with it.

actually no, because word's license states that you can use it's products and the products thereof to your own profit (and/or the entity you are employed/contracted by)

read the simcity4 eula and see if it allows you to use screenshots to your profit

remember: you do not actually OWN the sowtware you use, you own a license that allows you to use the sowtware under the creators' terms. and the creators reserve the right to revoke this license if you break the EULA (you may ask them for a partial or complete refund ... good luck getting it) and can sue your pance off (although they usually say "stop it" first)

yes, depends on the eula. always a good idea to ask them first.

Posting a screenshot on a webpage for fan purposes is often encouraged by developers. But in this case, it's being suggested as a map for a business. I doubt that would go over as well.
