I like both kinds of sci-fi, but prefer the darker ones, especially post-apocalyptic worlds. God I wish somebody would make a Fallout movie... Or something similar...

The environments and universe of the likes of Aliens really appeals to me, it's all really cool and actually believeable. But then again, on the other hand, i like the futuristic steralised environments to. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Same here, even the Alien series has a bit some sterile environments such as med-labs thrown in for good measure.

You should ask Mel Gibson to do one.

I prefer a mix. It's not as if the entire galaxy is going to be rusty and dark. It'll be mixed, just like in real life. You go to one place, maybe a space Marine barracks, it's gonna be gritty. You go to an inner colony or Earth itself and chances are you're going to see streamlined architecture and complete order.

So, I like both. I like my sci-fi to be a complete glimpse into a plausible future for (wo)mankind. Of course, human nature is going to make almost any setting gritty. That's when the combat comes in. The bullsh*t really falls away when your best friend loses his head in front of your eyes (literally).

Mix but prefer gritty, try cyberpunk, we got all this awesome tech and then we got the slums where everyone and their dog (literally) is addicted to some form of drug, teh higher ups are rich and corrupt and the middle class are the people who do assassinations.

    'course WH40k is my favorite.

    DOG pwns j00.

I personally prefer a mix of gritty and sterile, like in an empire, the throne worlds and those close to it would be sterile and pretty, but those farther away would fall into disrepair.(Gritty)

I also prefer movies with no hope, reminds one that no matter how bad real life actually gets, there is still hope.

Actually, and this is why many people may misunderstand each other in here, Cyberpunk is nowadays considered <i>the</i> dystopian sci-fi genre. The aesthetics aren't necessarily to be equalled with the narrative content.

I like the gritty parts of StarCraft's backstory.

The cutscenes with the Marines in it, like the one where they go onboard the space station to nuke it are awesome. That cigar-smoking, ****-kicking, heavy metal Space Marine look is just so cool. Then the Zerg appear and it's a struggle for survival.
