As opposed to the "OMGTIHS RCOPYRITE!!1"
Alright, lately I've been noticing more and more concept artists are adding "Copyright" to their concepts. Not only is this illegal (unless you apply for and recieve an actual copyright, you're not allowed to say that an item is copyrighted under international law
Despite growing mockery of this procedure (the topic description of this thread is an example of that), it just seems to be on the rise. It's the "in" thing for new artists, it seems.
I can understand the concerns artists have, such as someone claiming your work as their own, or modeling/skinning/etc. it and saying it was all "from scratch." But I have an idea, something that would free people to improve a concept, while still respecting the original author.
My suggestion? Open Source Concepts. It's simple. Replace the "?2004 Blah" in your drawing with "Open Source Concept." So what exactly does this mean? It means that while everyone can edit and change a concept drawing, no-one can claim full credit for it. And perhaps we could seek moderator assistance to help with those that do decide to break it.
This is my suggestion. Take it or leave it, it's up to you. But at the very least give it some thought. Let's stop smothering our work with a web of protection, and let it get some well-needed fresh air.
