The only time I use the flashlight is if I want aliens to come get me like at the start of combat cause skulks are easy to kill <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Well, lightgamma isn't making dark spots bright, it's just increasing the brightness of the lights. I got to use the flashlight sometimes, even with lightgamma on.

Well that's my point! the maps shouldn't be that bright...
ns_eclipse got so much brighter.. Power Sub usto be a deathtrap for marines, now its just another hallway.
Dont get me wrong, i like a lot of stuff that the mappers have done, its just that the atmosphere of NS is like walking in a park at daytime, instead of going around a dark abandoned space station with aliens ready to pounce on you, watching you from every corner.

lol you think state of the art nanobot equiped marines would know how to use some nightvision gogs, instead of a flashlight <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->. I mean even CS has nightvision lol
*Edit* hmm just had a thought typing this that nightvision could be an upgrade that the commander could research, this would give the option for mappers to make extremely dark areas in the maps since the marines could counter it.
When I see a skulk while my flashlight is on, when my crosshair moves over the moving skulk, the skulk begins to light up. This makes it a nice bright target... however, if the skulk jumps out of my crosshair, suddenly the only bright spot in my view is empty, and I have a harder time trying to find where the skulk went off to.
It's hard to explain. It's too bad HL is an older engine, because then the NS devs could implement flashlight glare... with a real flashlight, if someone is shining it at you, you don't see the person shining it, you just see the glare from the flashlight. That would be incredibly helpful when used against a charging skulk.

Incidentally, it's those brighter maps that get played the most; Eclipse and Veil, whereas those 'darker' ones, like Nancy and Lost, are almost forgotten. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
IMO, flashlight is good only when you are moving in a group; this way you can practically light up a whole room. They really should replace it with something a bit more useful...
A. There aren't _too_ many dark spots on the maps any more
B. The flashlight bug in HL, that causes the player using the flashlight to become an enormous lightbulb, meaning free snacks for skulks.
The flashlight bug is something I would really like to see fixed, as it means a very useful tool goes to waste.
Otherwise it's not really that useful since the flashlight only lights up a certain distance and might COMPLETELY miss the skulk anyway.
I wish maps were darker in some spots.</span>

i agree 100%.
i understand that a brighter map means a more balanced game for the marines (i guess?) but what made natural selection such an awesome game was definitely the atmosphere... now there's nothing to fear. i miss the 1.04 days sooooo much. They need to release like NS classic classic or something. i dun give a nut about balance i just wanna crap my pants getting bitten by a skulk or feel accomplished gunning down a gorge (of which there used to be 1 on the alien team alone).
sry for the rant
just wanted to say i also think that the maps are too bright. dark plz!
bert.
yes, it does do this (and it is annoying) but it <i>isn't a bug.</i>
i'm pretty sure that it is all intentional.
meh Ill use it, considering a skulk waiting in ambush will probably see you anyways from somewhere above, you might as well.
Its kinda hard to sneak by an ambush point were a skulk is already set on trying to suprise you,
so you might as well try to see them in those dark corners and shoot them before they just drop in to say hi right in front of your face. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
-Maps are bright already
-The "Christmas tree" effect from a flashlight often gets a marine seen easier and therefore killed faster.(the Christmas tree effect is when a marine uses their flashlight, and the whole marine lights up around himself)
-The flashlight only lights up walls and floors, it cant light up directly infront of you so its quite useless when you try to look down a hall way, since only floors get liten up.
If one really wanted to use flashlights for some stupid reaon, solutions would include:
-Making maps darker
-Somehow altering the half life engine to make the flashlight more useful by removing the christmas tree effect and making the flash-light light up more space
Or
(forgetting flashlights altogether)
Server operators may download a special nightvision Metamod plugin found at www.modns.org which was originally amx mod (until i requested a metamod version of it) and marines may use a nifty nightvision in place of their flashlight function.
Or
Flayra may deem it important enough (not likely) to integrate nightvision into the game to replace the flashlight function all with a nifty research requirement found in the observatory or something.
Other than this, who really cares for flashlights? at the moment we dont even need them very much.
if you have a flashlight on, you are more temped to look at the lighted area then the spots the skulk is not
witch does make you a sitting target
