Bush's head on a stick. Another depicted Bush as a devil launching a missile.

The drawings by a 15-year-old boy in Prosser were enough to prompt some questions from the Secret Service.

Agents questioned the teen after being called by police. The boy's art teacher told school officials about the drawings, and they called police.

The boy was not arrested. The school district has taken disciplinary action but refused to say what it was. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Wow. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Rumors on Fark say he was pulled out of his AP Gov class for drawing it... I dunno how true that is. The whole situation is doubleplus ungood, in my opinion. And being that this is fairly political, move it to Discussion if you feel the need, mods.

"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech..."

Cartoonists do it in the paper and it's called satire. A kid does it in his notes, and it's called terrorism.

Then again, the cartoonists are probably called terrorists now, too.

well I always thought the Media was censored in the US, as well as some books and movies (F. 451 was one of those for a long time I believe)

I don't see how a drawing done by a random 15 year old at school can POSSIBLY lead to Secret Police taking action for acts of terrorism.

    Unless... *checks room for cameras*

It's good to know that Mr. President George W. Bush is taking care of those terrorists. I know he was 15 but THEY CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE.

Federal law does not censor the media, nor does it censor books. Some communities choose to censor "objectionable" books, but it's on a very local scale (possibly even by school or district).

The government can ask media not to report things (out of respect, if it's an issue of national security, etc), and they can refuse to disclose things to the media... but if the media gets a hold of it, it's pretty much fair game.

There are laws against libel/slander (written and spoken false defamation of character, respectively), but to my knowledge no laws against (1) telling the truth or (2) having an opinion.

Great, a picture of Bush's head on a stick. I'm sure there's a lot of other pictures of the same thing by others. Stupid Art teacher, good going for sucking. That sucks for the kid.

I personally agree with CWAG here. Bush has been showing some stuff recently that seems a lot like Hitler-type stuff. The speeches given every day, the hiding of information, the seemingly "Different" but the same war strategies.

Is it me, or could we honestly be starting World War III ourselves?

I honestly question that, don't flame me for it. Bush has done some serious stuff that obstructs my rights(I myself drew a picture in class of American soldiers wondering why they were shooting these guys HOLDING AK-47's. Made the 47 guys look kinda southern, to show the similarity of type[people just wanting to defend their home. The police system over there right now is screwed, so even I would carry this stuff at that time. Well, school took the picture and burned it, and I got a long talk about how we need to support our country in its time of need. All I responded with was 'Need my ****', and I got detention for 3 days.)

If my suspitions are correct- Lord help us. It has begun.

Since a little thing called columbine that made drawing guns and the like a big no-no... i'm guessing your wonderful school is just saying some extra BS about troops to top it off.

Is anyone here familiar with the Schenck v. US supreme court case ? To some degree, the picture, can be considered in conflict with clear and present danger in any legal sense. Of course, in practicality, it's not that big of a deal. But legally, you can't call him Hitler, and saying that he's restricting the first amendment. Which in this case, doesn't really apply, drawing pictures of somebody's head on a stick hardly has anything to do with "speech" or even an opinion, and violence. If there was a KKK march and they were showing pictures of african americans with their heads on sticks would that be ok? Or would you like the government to come in and question what the issue is? It's NOT satire. Just because you dislike Bush doesn't mean you need to think that anything he does is pure evil and malice. Heck, it was the Secret Service anyways.

Do I think the Secret Service is overreacting ? Yes. Do I think it's a big deal ? No. Do I think G Bush was even told about it until after it happened ? Probably not. Do I think you guys are overreacting about calling him Hitler ? Absolutely.

I also agree with CWAG. My grandmother, a Lithuainian, was living in Germany through half of World War II. And now she's telling me that some of the things happening here in the United States remind her of the late 30's. I believe what the administration is doing is wrong, especially the Patriot Act, but I can't seem to come up with any possible conspiracy theories. Why the hell would someone want to do the things Mr. Bush is doing? Unless you believe all that Illuminati stuff, I can't see any ulterior motives other than a quick buck and a little revenge (and that's just Iraq). And if it is for the money, the human race has found a new low.

This country has been scaring me for about 5 years. I desperately hope that the elections will not be rigged again, becuase if they are I think I'm going to have to move to Sweden or New Zealand - I draw guns in class. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As 404 pointed out, sounds more like a case of "I'm the victim" society's no win situation, to me. A fifteen year old can shoot people just as easily as anyone else, and if they didn't check it and the kid did, as 404 also said, there would be hell to pay there.

Would you rather people not ever check these kinds of things, and not prevent people from killing others? What? It's an invasion of privacy?! Infringment of free speech?! That's not what you said after Columbine! Etc, etc...

And also, let it be known, that the consitution only really applies to adults. Fifteen year old technically don't have freedom of speech. Also, note, that refereanced ammendments exist more so that the supreme court has a way to repeal such laws that take away our freedom than to prevent them. Many times in our history freedom of speech has been oppressed by laws.

If this weren't in a school, it's highly likely that nothing would've happened. Since it was in a school, it's highly likely that something like this would've happened before 9/11, before Bush's admin, before Columbine, hell before any damn thing you can name. There's a rather famous Supreme Court decision which says that your rights don't stop at the schoolhouse door, but nearly every other court case in the history of our justice system, both before and after that decision, take a big nasty dump all over that. School censorship is nothing new. You HAVE no rights in this nation before you're 18, and that court case, or any other case that says you do, is a bald-faced lie for the papers that's going to get tossed out the window the next time the smallest thing happens. School is hell.

As for the entire Bush becoming Hitler thing, I used to think like that, but now I don't think so. The American people aren't that guillable (yet) and it won't happen for sometime. As for the pictures, the head on a stick one I can understand, that could be a possible threat to the president. As for the devil one, that is more of an opinoin and I don't think they were concerned about one since we have all kinds of Political Cartoons that portray Bush as a rather unintellegent person that doesn't know what he is doing. (Which I agree with... <.< >.> O_O -_-)

Hah! That'll teach that terrorist to exercise his constitutional right to freedom of expression! Damn kids these days running around exercizing crummy rights like freedom of speech and religion, instead of good, wholesome rights like carrying a gun around. What's the world coming too when people can openly criticize our commander-in-cheif? Well, not openly, but still, those doodles were STRAIGHT FROM THE DEVIL. It's a relief the art teacher realized that someone drawing a picture could be a threat to national security. And to think some people would have passed it off as just a drawing.
