There's an element of modern culture that tries to break away from the mainstream just for the sake of breaking away. These are the people that go out and say they outright hated matrix 2 and 3. The people that defend book reading because somehow it magically makes them smarter. The people that feel the need to watch senseless anime after senseless anime, because it's anime. The people that absorb the furry lifestyle because it makes them *unique*.

I like Penny Arcade. I don't have to justify myself.
You quite noticeably hate penny arcade. You have proved that you at least have valid reasons for hating it, but this is still just your opinion. In case you hadn't noticed, the vast majority like penny arcade, and this is unlikely to change. Whether or not it DOES suck is irrelevant, the masses have spoken.
I can understand your points about fanboyism, as well as Them's (closely related) points. Many things, penny arcade included, have created their own little sub-culture of fanboys that will defend the honour of their chosen game/movie/site/lifestyle to the death, no matter how futile it may seem, or how inane it is/has become. Examples of these groups include Goths, fans of "The Matrix", Counter-strike players, and yes, even NS players.
I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with any of the above, just that these are examples of fanboy syndrome gone mad. O.k my examples could probably have been better, but I think they make my point adaquately.
I'm sure some of you would disagree with "NS players", but think about it. Think back to the release of 2.0, with overpowered aliens. How many people were there who said "2.0 is not unbalanced, you just have to get used to it" even after several weeks.
Then Flayra agreed that 2.0 was unbalanced. Oh look at that, now we have "OMG 2.0 is unbalanced" posts everywhere! Yes, that's right, NS has produced its own fanboys, with Flayra as their patron deity.
Once again I must stress that there's nothing WRONG with being a big fan of something, just that the single-minded ignorance that often comes with fanboyism is extremely infuriating. I realise I'm rambling so I will bring this to a close with a final example.
A few months ago, I decided to try some anime, after seeing numerous posts on these boards. At first I tried to like it, if only to "fit in" whilst still being an "outsider" (ironic that some anime fans call themselves that), but frankly, I don't like anime. I don't hate it, and some of it is actually quite good, but the vast majority is.... not entertaining to me.
Now notice how i said "not entertaining to me", I was going to say "mindless japanese crap", but that would have been MY opinion. I'm not suggesting that all anime fans are mindless fanboys, just that there is a large element of fanboyism there.
I'm going to stop typing now and do something constructive.

My personal beef is that Penny-Arcade is too often used in an attempt to win an argument about gaming (or gaming news). Penny-Arcade is nowhere near unbiased, and too often can't get their facts straight when writing a comic. I know, they don't claim to be a credible news source, yet for some reason people seem to think they are.
Remember back when Underworld came out, and how everyone was siding with the studio designing Underworld because Penny-Arcade said nobody can copyright vampires? Few really took the time to read the lawsuit charges or the actual credible news sources - they just continued to snap their fingers at Penny-Arcade's comic about Underworld, copying and pasting the comic into any debate about it as some sort of "proof" that Underworld's studio was in the right.
This has been done before, and always treated as some sort of "final word" on a subject, because Gabe and Tycho took the time to make a cartoon out of it. Nevermind that in order for the comic to be funny, one has to know the inside joke (and sometimes it can require extensive reading to understand the "inside"). Nevermind that in many cases the comics (after finding out the inside information) are not funny or merely state the obvious. Nevermind that in many cases the comics depict an off-the-wall version of the editor's own opinions... for some reason Penny-Arcade is still respected, and often considered as credible as major gaming news websites.
Is that the key to success? Jot down a little comic stating the obvious, while adding heavy doses of sarcasm and profanity? Is that what makes things popular? I guess I'll go back to my book club... I'm not "cool" enough to be a Penny-Arcade fan!
---------
That's my main reason for disliking Penny-Acrade... well, that and I don't think they're very funny.

Sure, Penny Arcade is a violently biased news source. But Tycho and Gabe have never claimed it to be otherwise, and I (and I think a lot of others) find that up-front-ness refreshing.
They've got a poster, "Penny Arcade: You Wouldn't Get It." They realize that some people don't like their style of humor. Some people don't like having to read a news post to understand the point of the comic. Personally, I don't mind because I treat PA as a gaming news site as much as a comic, if not moreso. I check PA on TTSS, not just on MWF. Is it a biased opinion? Sure! However, I've come to agree with Tycho & Gabe on many, many games, and so it's a biased opinion that I know I can trust to give me the skinny on gaming news.
Penny Arcade has never claimed to be anything it isn't. They realize their humor doesn't appeal to everyone, but at the same time they know that clearly their humor *does* appeal to a very large group of people (how many other non-slashdot websites regularly destroy the bandwidth of any site they link to?), and as such they're clearly doing *something* right.
Other comics, such as Something Positive and Angst Technology, were funny enough to make me read their entire archives and i found almost all of it funny.
However, every comic strip of PA i have read i haven't found the slightest bit funny.

I'm just coming here to point out one thing.
AllUrHive even admitted that he wouldn't hate it so much if it wasn't popular. Bringing my argument to it's final destination.
You can dislike something all you want. You can say you weren't entertained by the matrix 2 and 3, but to deny that they were at least well made, even if you didn't like the plot/story, is insane.
And for reading books, there's nothing wrong with reading books. But I KNOW that some people out there read them JUST for the sake of saying that they read books. They could care less about the actual stories or the literature skills of the authur. And that is what makes their instance of reading pointless.
And not all anime is bad, some of it is pretty damn awesome. But I have to say that some of it is just mindless garbage that I can not find the entertainment value in. Which is just as valid as not liking PA. But then I notice there are people at DigiPen that seem to watch even the crappiest of crappy anime simply because it's anime. And that's when it starts to be annoying.
So yes, everyone has a right to dislike PA. And to hate it's fanboys. But I'm saying that it's not ok to basically call their majority of readers a bunch of idiots by proxy. They have a huge reader base, and a very large portion of those readers are not "fanboys".

Simplt because you like something, does not give you any athority to say to me that I have to as well. Useing this as an example I can say to you that yes, they were in fact TERRIBLE films by nearly any sandard, not the least of which being my own personal one. I can give you countless example as to how they are shoddy films, badly written, badly acted, overhyped, and overal bad. You are free to enjoy them all you want, but the minute you try to tell me (or anyone within a 50 mile radius of me) that they were good films I simply have to interject and try to refute your claims, simply to make my opinions known and oftentimes simply for conversation's sake. This does not reflect on you as a person, except that you happen to like terrible movies.
The whole PA thing is exactly the same. I don't believe I ever said "you are stupid if you read and enjoy PA", all I'm saying is that PA sucks, and I'm trying to present my position in a convincing manner.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that Them was referring to what is nowadays called 'Production Values' - and while I disliked, to continue the example, Reloaded so much that I didn't even bother with Revolution, I've got to admit that the movie was exercised very well, although not in a fashion suiting my tastes. Similiar can quite possibly be said about your stance towards PA, because, try as you might, you won't be able to prove Gabe a bad artist or Tycho a bad writer.
AllUrHive, you can argue all you want, but no matter how many points you make, it is still only your opinion, and trying to convince people otherwise, and then getting all stressy when they prefer their own is basically selfish. "NOO, Your opinion sucks, mine is much better!" "But I like my opinion" "IT SUCKS!!!"
You may say it is "badly drawn", there are people who would disagree with you (me), and there are people who would agree with you but like it that way. The jokes may be predictable, but some people like it that way.
Yes, you have your own opinion, thats nice for you, I am glad you are a free thinker. You have made your point, and if nobody is convinced by now, they never will be.
Just remember, it is only an opinion on an internet forum from a person you will probably never meet. You don't have to care about it one bit. It doesn't affect you. What's the point getting all wound up about something that doesn't affect you?

I think I get what you are sayiing, but usually production values have VERY little to do with how good a movie is, considering as most of the time what is meant by "production values" is just a higher quality of the actual film itself and a slight green filter. There are plenty of movies that have great "production values" but are terrible examples of film-making, and just as many low-budget movies that simply can't afford the stuff that passes for production value but are amazing to watch. In this same way PA does manage to come off as a rather proffesional endeavor, yes it is well put-together, but that has little or nothing to do with that actual content of what is featured there.

So yes, everyone has a right to dislike PA. And to hate it's fanboys. But I'm saying that it's not ok to basically call their majority of readers a bunch of idiots by proxy. They have a huge reader base, and a very large portion of those readers are not "fanboys".
Truth>Opinion Battles.
[edit]Oh, and I found todays strip hilarious. Make of that whatever you want about your admins mental state.[/edit]
I'm sorry but I could not disagree more with that statement.

If I seem "wound up" then I assure you it is only coincedence. I quick getting mad over the internet a long time ago and I think Ihave been rather successful up until now. I am only talking about this because I enjoy the discussion, I don't take any of this personally or anything. Just because I hate PA with every fiber and molecule of my being doesn't mean I have to get mad about it.
