I recommend IZArc ( http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/ ) a bit over 7-zip. It can handle a few more formats than that program. Also free and not bloated.

Great choices for everything else.

edit: Trillian is also good IM'er if you want skin support and dont mind a bit of bloat

Dev-Cpp is very good, and I highly reccomend it. Mostly it's just built on top of existing stuff (such as a Windows port of the g++ compiler, and I believe the debugger is also ported) but it's nice to have a free IDE that makes using those tools easier.

I did have a few issues trying to use DirectX with it, but that's about it.

Tried out IZarc... I'm converted... very good.... and I also gave up pira... i mean... acquiring... photoshop... so I'm using GIMP now. 2.0 cleaned up a lot of the problems with it I had before.

Well, the thing about freeware is that they are usually free of "bloat". For users like you and I, the monetary 'free' part is really not important.

case in point: WMP vs Media Player Classic

Try FileZilla. It makes WS_FTP seem like the ancient Win 3.1 style crap it is. :P

And here's some more free stuff for you:

Mozilla Thunderbird - E-mail client that matches Outlook's capabilities, and is a lot more stable + you can't get virii. Does *NOT* require you to have Mozilla/Firefox browser installed either if you prefer another.

dBpowerAMP Music Converter (dMC) - Finally, a free program to rip CD's to MP3s. and its way better than any other I've ever used.

Audacity - Professional grade audio file editor, really beats the crap out of Cool Edit. And you can't beat the price: Free! :D

ASFTools - Ever be streaming an ASF that you really want to save to your hard drive? With this you can save all ASF streams to your heart's desire! Also it can repair/combine ASFs and do other neat stuff.

IrfanView - Free image browser that does batch conversion/resize and some more stuff.

MyIE2. It's sort of like Internet Explorer, but much much better. It's free, and I like it more than other free browsers because it's 100% compatible with everything but is still really good.

I use similar programs. Here is what I prefer:

FTP Explorer - Windows Explorer interface with drag-and-drop file transfers.

TUGZip - Archive program with Windows Explorer style interface, but with some "pretty" visual enhancements (hey, they look nice). Plus, it can open .rar files, which makes me happy.

ISOBuster - Rip any audio CD you own to .wav format!

RazorLAME - Take the .wav files and convert them to .mp3!

Foobar2000 - Fast moving, easily customizable music program!

WinTidy - Free up desktop space with this handy icon-shrinking utility!

TClock - Change the text and image used on your Start button, as well as customize your status bar clock!

Textpad - Color coded HTML text-editor for Windows.

Font Xplorer Lite - Preview your entire font collection!

IconEdit32 - Design your own fonts!

wow these list are useful for my work computer! I just got a new work computer and need to put in the usual stuff. And since I should not put the "warez" that I usally put in my home computer, these free yet reliable progs will be most useful.

Does anyone know of a reliable and free PDF converter (that like converts word document to PDF)?

I like using HTML-Kit for web editing. Also free and has a plugin system.

AVG Anti-Virus
Zone Alarm Firewall
Ad-Aware Spyware Detection/Removal

EDIT: Almost left out The All-Seeing Eye, an awesome free server browser. It does have the occassional nag screen, but they're few and far between.

Man and I just downloaded ws_ftp today... Maybe next time I will get Filezilla and Mozilla browser & email client.

BTW:
Is there any interconnectivity between mozilla thunderbird and mozilla/firefox?
What is the difference between mozilla and firefox?
Is/Are these browser(s) better than Opera 7.0, which I currently use?

[Edit] Woah sorry there; typo - I meant thunderbird not filezilla. My mistake! [/Edit]

Firefox is a good browser, but requires extensive modding (called extensions) to make it worthwhile. Opera comes with these features, while Firefox comes bare-boned.

Mozilla is the company that makes Firefox. Mozilla 1.6 is the suite designed by Mozilla.org. It has Firefox, an email client, IRC client, and HTML editor built into one program. However, users can download Firefox separately.

Spybot Search and Destroy - very good removal program, don't think its bloated (wouldn't it be ironic if it was)

My Firefox Extensions (tools>options>extenstions>get new)

FLST 0.5.1 - focus last selected tab
Download With 0.0.6 - adds 'download with getright' to right click menu
sesson saver 0.2d - saves on crash, when you want it to.
dictionary search 0.5 - look up that word you forgot how to spell
mouse gestures - opera, very customisable
calender - dont leave home without it
copy image 0.1 - for some reason firefox doesn't have this in their right click menu
