post your idea here
ok so at the moment all eyes are on city of heros but i dont know about you but i dont think i would enjoy a game were every ones a super hero sounds a bit repetative yea you can fly but so can every one else so whats the point you wont look any diffrent. Anyway what this post is about is are the old MMORPG still the kings thing like everquest or are the newer genaration like starwars qalaxies thretening to over throw there rule. So far my eyes are the matrix online and Blizzards World of Warcraft, can the matrix creators finaly get the credibility back that they made with there first movie and can blizzard pull of one of there biggest gambles ever.
What we gota keep in mind is MMORPG are constently being updated if you were foolish enough to buy stars wars galaxies when it was first relased (major bugs included not being able to attack anything) you will have relised is evolved into a pretty worth while online world with the driod invastion coming up and space battles and more planets already on the cards it would seem that it becoming quite a large scale competiter. If any one has manged to get into the World of warcraft beta you will undoubtely be batteling your way up the ranks untill you can buy your self a dawf gyrocopter to fly around in while the radio next to you booms out ride of the valkeries. Then there Planet side the King of battles no one can argue that there is bigger warfare anywere else on the gaming market not even battfeild comes close to dislodging the hundereds of tanks in an orrginsed battle suported by hot dropping dropships (dropship uses boosters to go as fast as possible while skimming the ground while unloding its passangers nearly impossible to shoot down if done in the middle of a warzone it is knowen as the hot drop) Personel my favrouite is planet side but thats becouse im a first person shooter fan and my fav game of all time had to be tribes 2 (which after all this time still has a huge fan base)
Now thats what i think but what do you think what is the king of the MMORPG it dousent have to be out yet and your entitled to your opinions unless of course your under a dictatorship in which case post in secret. i really shoud have made a poll but its a bit late for shouldofs now.

So far Neocron and City of Heroes are my votes. And probably SWG when it gets its space expansion.

TBH, I've never seen anything out of the ordinary about WoW. I think the only reason people like it is because Blizzard is making it. Whoop dee friggin well do.

Final Fantasy XI. No chance for anything else. I've tried Everquest, Asheron's Call(1 & 2), Neocron, City of Heroes, Ragnarok, Star Wars Galaxies, the whole shabiz.

Final Fantasy XI is so much better. And best of all- they add TONS of content about every 2-3 months. Like just yesterday, they introduced PVP to the game. And a few months back, they introduced the "Limbo" areas. They just keep adding things. And I haven't even been NEAR as many places as some people!!!

FFXI all the way, it's the most polished MMO I've ever seen and it has a story line by sqaure.

I find it pretty funny, considering CoH is the only MMORPG I've played with so many different chars. And does BARRY know what he's talking about? There's more than flying in CoH...flying, extra fighting abilities, superjumping, healing, ressurection, there's tons of powerpools each with 4 abilities. Numerous power-sets with tons of powers...yeah...it's a really repetitive and dull MMORPG. I mean, especially compared to all the others like UO, EQ, and Anarchy Online.

-cough-

Yeah. CoH is the best MMORPG I've played, and the only I'll ever buy.

And to date the only truly great game Blizzard has released is WC2, and WoW looks boring...stereotypical fantasy. Rah rah.

Eh, I wouldn't say so(alert, half hijacking of thread):

While Blizzard has had some great, games there are quite a few things I'd say that aren't great:

the Diablos got old really fast.

Warcraft III wasn't as good as other recent RTS.

Nothing special in graphics/sound/gameplay department lately.

Really, I think their doing great still just because of Starcraft. Lets hope I'm wrong with WoW, but at the same time, from what everything I've heard of it, its just another MMORPG, except done by Blizzard.

I still reccomend FFXI over it, because of the new content all the time, and because its perfectly balanced/supported.

yeah because diablo is a pinnical of fun...

anyways, ignoring rampant fanboyism and misplaced faith (companies are human; it's only a matter of time before they make something you don't like), I'm actually not gonna sit and write an essay in this for once. I've already plastered my thoughts all over this board well enough for anyone to know what I think without me wasting a day typing it out again ^^

Anyways, my tops MMOs (established at least) are Ragnarok Online, Neocron and Asheron's Call 2. They all get boring eventually but they all share good ideas in certain places or good execution.
All 3 have excellent worlds that feel like they have life to them, asheron's call has massive landscapes that are beautiful and fill you with a sense of adventure, complete with cool dungeons of doom. Ragnarok has lots of lil nooks and crannies to explore and a ton of useless items that you feel compelled to collect or use just because they're there... it's one of the few worlds where stuff like marriage, shopping at the market, watching people perform or even spending some time down the pub is full of player interaction and light-hearted chatter, often being events run by the players themselves =3
Neocron offers a very unique way to mould your character and the world is just a general joy to look around... from the depressing cities to riding the train to finding abandoned ruins out in the wastelands it's a very interesting game, especially as it throws almost unlimited PK into the mix making it feel very lawless and dangerous ^^

Phantasy Star Online rocks my world but it's not quite in the MMO category unless rumours about sega's latest one for the PC are true.

FFXI? Never played it but it's pretty and i hear the high level combat is actually fun and skillful though for some reason square saw fit to make the start of your character a dull, mindless, lonely level-grind.

CoH is definitely sparking up my curiousity though ^^
I've not played enough of it to really come to a conclusion but despite my hatred for the likes of stuff like superman I'm really getting a giggle out of the game; it's fun, has a sense of humour and never seems to take itself too seriously.
The whole thing with muggings and whatnot help you feel like the city has it's own purpose other than a levelling plane plus the citizens and police who run away from stuff like headless chickens add to the atmosphere XD
One thing I like is that akin to my fave lil PSO, while there's a level grind you won't really be too aware of it. You'll find yourself much more engaged in the interesting little stories and exploration inherent to the game plus there's not really much stat-mongering to it which is a pleasant change. Most of combat will be experimenting with your abilities to see what kind of interesting combinations you can get... I often find myself playing with knockdown abilities like my shotgun then hammering a couple of clips into their face while they're lying on the ground

The community is a mixed bag but there's a lot of Phantasy Star Online players here and if that's any indication it's a good one... most people seem to type properly, they don't start stupid arguements like "OMG JOO KILLSTEALER!!! I REPORTZ JOO!!!" and while everyone often seems in a rush to get somewhere (very very very unusual in an MMORPG XD) when they get a chance to stop and talk they tend to be pretty nice =3

aaaand that's my random post for this MMO topic

edit: actually I might swing by again and just drop a huge list of MMOs I've tried and let you guys have a looky if there's some you haven't tried before ^^

Oh god, the hatred, the hatred.

Diablo I & II own!
I would KILL for Diablo MMORPG (The customization man!), although it's already MMOG.

Hey I like CoH as much as everyone here, but I wouldn't just ignore all the exceptional experiences every beta players of WoW seemed to be sharing.

I have tried Everquest (actually that's an understatement, I was hooked for years)
They completely ignored my type of gaming, aka casual. Five 1-hour plays does not equal one 5-hours grind.

Ragnarok online is just way tooooo slow.

/me rubs his hands together

exelent... we are bringing Gem into the drak side....

Yah, Fave MMO = CoH

The only 'traditional' MMO I played before this was Anarchy Online (well PE also, but PE just sucks).
I actualy like AO ALOT. It has combat sorta like CoH (I loved AO Combat), missions were fun, group exersices rocked.
The combat is AO work similar to CoH:
You had your attacks and other skills, assign them to hotkeys and press em when you ned em. Again, they would have cool down times, and costs and such.
The main problem with AO was that the economy sucked. Once you got to high levels you were way to powerful AND could effect low levels.
Also some of the clases were just not good (naimly my 2 faves)

So CoH fixed alot of that

actually, diablo is an MOG... it doesn't hit the required amount of players in a game to come even a tenth close to 'Massively' according to the classifications I read ^^;

Oh and take all that junk off and you'll look the same as every other member of your class; Diablo is as much playing with yourself over pointless numbers as it is developing a strong clicking finger. Customisation is about developing a style or character not a spreadsheet =P

Sorry but when it comes down to blizzard/diablo I'm with quanaut.

and Than, I was excited about CoH like 2 years ago or something... I just got bored of waiting and the comic-book fans were scaring me ^~

As for RO being slow... depends on what you were after, I hate levelling so I was too busy running about having a giggle to notice ^^;

I've always liked Star Wars: Galaxies. Not only is it set in the Star Wars universe, but everything's pretty well balanced, nobody can solo eveything in the game, in encourages interaction between eveyr single type of character, none of the non-combat proffessions are useless, there's a player run economy, some servers have lots of people who roleplay, and it's almost bug-free. Plus it's Star Wars, and it's gonna have twitch space combat when the expansion comes out.

Cows say Mu!

Mu is a fun FREE (OH EM GEE) MMORPG. The only problem is their current infestation of PKers...

I played MU once... it was kinda like having your toenails removed without anaesthetic =D

If you're recommending MU why not just throw the evil that's runescape in there while you're at it =3
Or maybe even the relentless boredom of Priston Tale

While I think those 3 are amongst some of the worst MMOs I've played there's actually some that I wouldn't expose anyone to... for the safety of anyone reading this thread I won't even link endless ages; it's physically painful to play due the graphics looking like something made by a 2 year old, the 'music' is a strangely agonising cacophany of sound that genuinely caused one of my flatmates to run from the room screaming and the game has about as much character as a blank piece of paper XD

edit: okies so maybe I'm just being judgemental but I seriously didn't like MU ^^;
Try something like Risk Your Life which is marginally better and free for now.
There's also a game in production which will always be free called Planeshift but it's still in pretty early alphas as far as playability goes... last I played they didn't even have combat or monsters in yet but that was about a year or more ago =o

I guess one of the reasons I like Ragnarok is because I saw it from start to finish... I was there from the first alphas right up till the first month of it being gold (paid for a month too before getting bored and leaving ^^ ).

As you may have noticed, City of Heroes has created quite a flutter of activity around here, and with good reason - it's a great game. It's the first MMOG I've decided to pay for (I got a 30-day trial for Planetside, but it was free). Unfortunatly, I pre-ordered a bit late, so I missed out on the 3-day start. See you all next week!
