I got the same problem after i installed WM9 for a DVD I got... I just have to use Real Alternative, Media Player Classic, or Winamp5 to play my media stuff. (winamp5 plays wmvs and stuff)

Divx wouldn't open .wmv files. Check your options and make sure you have automatic codec downloading switched on. There's no reason why WMP9 shouldn't pick up mpeg2 or wmv files. This actually happened to me recently after i uninstalled a codec pack, beecause i'd disabled it before.

Aye DIVX (and I'm pretty sure XVID and the rest too) work with .avi extentions.

Really though, don't use WMP. I use BSPlayer, and it serves me well. There are countless other players that are better than WMP as well.

I had that problem to when I installed WMP Beta 9.. but I figured cause it was a beta... big mistake on my part. So from now on I just use Winamp 5 for all of the video playing back needs. Sometimes even my Divx won't play the files, yet winamp just beats them files over the head and makes them play. :-)
