summary: farmers call airstrike on hunting wolves.
i don't get it. sometimes there are reasons for killing animals like that... like in reefs around the world, infestations of sea stars are destroying entire fields of coral. marine biologists are trying to devise something, a poison, a solution.
but sometimes we humans can do better..
there's gotta be some kind of deterrent to keep predators away from livestock, but for money's sake the farmer would rather just have the predators killed.
there's a reason that "wolves preying on livestock remains rare". if we didn't spend so much time f*ing things over for the ecosystem, it would spend less time messing with us.
so when nature tries to compensate, we should respond with something like.. an electric fence.. or something. they have shark repellent. what about wolf-repellent? =\

that's what i'm talking about XD
Once seven wolves strong, the Sentinel Pack now has only one healthy wolf left. Another one wearing a radio collar is injured, but still alive.
Bangs said trappers snuck up on the injured wolf Friday and it was limping but could walk. It is being kept alive in hopes that the last healthy wolf from the pack will come back so both can be killed.

This is just so **** disgusting.
Need I say more about why I dislike humanity? Well?

Animals have a little thing, it's called DOING WHAT THE HELL IS NEEDED TO EAT!
No smell will keep a hungry animal away for long.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day.
Meh, to me... Humans are just another species trying to survive. We think we're the best and deserve to survive the most, therefore we do whatever we think will ensure our survival. Every species does what they can to ensure their survival. Therefore, if we think that killing wolves will ensure our survival, then we're going to kill wolves. That's all there is to it.
I relayed this belief to someone, and they said "Do you think that "trying to survive" justifies evil?" First of all... Evil in who's eyes? There is no such thing as universal morality for all species, therefore a bird is not going to agree with a human or a wolf on what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Evil to a human? No, we're trying to survive, therefore it's justified to us. (This is different in some cultures, who have a different logic towards things depending on the area.) Evil to wolves? Well, of course. They're not in the lead for survival and they're losing numbers, of course they aren't going to like it.
I doubt anyone here opposing the hunting of wolves has lived in Alaska for any length of time. Third-hand sources are not reliable in this situation, since you need to be there to know what life for your species there is like. If I recall correctly, SpyderMonkey served in Alaska for a few years. We could ask his opinion on the subject, but it still won't be 100% accurate, since it's a third-party source and it's likely that he won't relay a complete situation report.

shark repellant sells for a reason ^_~
Were planning trips to mars. I highly doubt wolves are going to throw us off the food chain.
They are messing with our food. That is the point.
Can we be better, on some abstract philosophical level? Go argue about that all day. But I want my steak cheap. There's nothing wrong with living viscerally, it's the way we were made.
BUT.
the farmers didn't take any precations before just slaughtering the wolves. that's the issue at hand.
If say there are deer or antelope or caribou living in the area, and a large population at that, then the livestock is extremely safe as long as you can place some basic defenses around them. Because at that point it comes down to opportunity cost, the defenses of the livestock have to be better than the defenses of the deer, then the wolf will see that obtaining deer is easier and go after the deer.
We are so much higher than wolves that for us, the manipulation of their species goes beyond simple slaughter. If we want, we can control their population down to the last detail; where they get their food, what methods they have to use to do so, etc. So I think we should. Sure, at that point it ceases to be truly natural, but if people want them to survive, they must survive on our terms. Emulated nature is better than no nature at all, no matter how artificial.

Can you back that up? I find it hard to believe that the ranchers wouldn't have any barbed wire, electric fences, noisemakers, or anything in the area.
I mean all they do is bite your **** in while you're going through a cave to get to the Communications Tower unless of course they **** on your box.

I hate to sound flamey, but this topic is about real life wolves, not Metal Gear Solid wolves

Agreed. Face it, no one's going to listen to you, it's going to happen. I'm sure they've tried other ways, but the wolves just kept coming back, so now we have this situation at hand.

Check the petition in my sig, I'd reckon at least 250-1000 people on that were as a result of me posting that link. People HAVE and WILL Listen.
They signed the petition.... That's at least doing SOMETHING about it.. Others have passed the petition link around to others, getting more to sign it, that's also DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

This method X_stickman suggested has allready been tried and tested. It works. I don't really see why no-one uses it, I mean it would be easy to make one yourself... why does no-one bother?
Now that's just completely ignoring rules of biology and natural selection. For diversity to occur, wiping out species is not the answer. The more animals in a species the more variation there is, and the higher chance of survival.
It depends on humanity to not wipe out total species, completely killing any chance of survival they had whatsoever and disturbing the ecosystem.

lol mr. beast (with your animal avatar and sig.) you better stay away from farmer likus field, he might shoot you.

yus.
the world would be really shltty without any aminals.
We go through all the trouble of wiping out these wolves to save the land that we went though all the trouble of getting even though it is wolf-ridden to raise some livestock that we go through all the trouble of raising despite the fact that the amount of vegetables it takes to feed those cows can feed vastly more people than can the livestock itself. It's a downward spiral of ineficient and frankly stupid behaviour that is all-to-common a pattern in humanity.

For a few reasons:
1) If you're a farmer, you're going to have a rifle anyway. Bullets are cheap.
2) Shooting them is a lot cheaper than buying or even making repellants, and a lot more effective.
3) The farmer gets meat for dinner.
I don't see how doing it from the air is any different from the ground. If that wolf is going to get shot, it's going to get shot. Who cares of the methods?
Also, Beast, I seriously doubt that they're going to listen to an online petition, no matter how many people sign it. I doubt one person who has signed that petition knows exactly what the situation is in Alaska, and I'm willing to wager that 90% signed it because "OMG, killing wolves is so horrible!!" Then they go out and have a nice, big hamburger with some friends. There's no way they HAVE to listen to the petition, either. It's not going to beat them in to submission.
Back ontopic, Those speaker/wolf repellant things (That go "RAHHSOFhasohfasbfubsbfiubsfub" according to X_stickman) are not that expensive, and in the long term, work out cheaper than bullets, and actually takes LESS EFFORT to use, you stick them in the ground and flick a switch maybe, then leave it. You might have to change the batteries every...month or so.
Compare that with the "gun" approach and you'll begin to get the idea - the gun method is vastly more inefficient.
