Getting back to the origional link I can see why/how this would be implemented.

ex. US Criminal Justice system. Everytime we want to find info out about a crmininal or a suspect and we want to search for informaiton in a database.

Well i guess i should say databases.

FBI,,ATF,DEA,Secret Service, Customs, INS, local municipal, grouped INTERPOL data, state police databases, private investigation firms, department of motor vehicals, social security, military etc .........

All separate! What a hassle things can be.

You would think thet would just consolodate everything (they have to some extent but not nearly enough).

4.8 million dollars doesnt seem that expensive either considering the billions already spent annualy to fight/prevent crime in the US.

What an improvement this will be.

4.7 million, I said 4.8 so I can least buy it, they'll even win 0.1 million with that.

I hope they plug a surge protector into the power supply. One surge = Boom! goes your 2.5TB ram.

I'll take two please

on WINDOWS XP.

and it still wouldn't lag.

I think this is part of the Governments secret conspiracy TO HOST GAMING SERVERS! Yeaah!!

As a side-effect, they can put a bunch of coke cans in the room with the server racks for a couple of days and sell them on Ebay for 200 bucks each! I mean, cmon, I bet they could recoup their investment in less than a year! (And all you would have to do is to pay a janitor to mop the floor every couple days )

Hmmmm
2.5 TB is
2.500.000.000.000 Byte (I know it isn't, it is a power of 2, but this looks better )
My Ram is
512.000.000 Byte
This means they got ~4800 times the RAM I have. That is sick .
BTW what does such a big RAM drive look like?
• WheeeeWheeee Join Date: 2003-02-18 Member: 13713Members, Reinforced - Shadow
it's not a single drive; it's a bunch of server racks filled with 64-GB modules of RAM. I think it should fairly easily completely fill a mid-sized room.

Well mounted on only 3 racks, so it can't be THAT big.

true, i misread the 40 3u rackmounts as 400...oops but that's still quite a bit of space.
*edit* they probably would have it located in some warehouse, so it would be pretty insignificant compared to the size of the actual room it's in, i was just comparing it to normal wiring closets/server rooms for a college or a small business or whatnot.

The real question is when, oh when, will someone figure out how to get the molecular computing down... (using molecules as transistors and as the parts, so a regular sized processor would be 4-5 terahertz. Imagine a video card on molecular computing... /me shivers)

heh my dad was involved in a project that was under development to use light waves for the processor or something like that. Now that would be cool if something ever comes out in my life time. Im still waiting to get one of those interactive holograpghic projectors. like in Minority Report.
