That, or the main engine thingy of the Event Horizon, from the movie of the same name.

Looks a bit small and pathetic really though, would've been better if it took the whole room up or something.

For some reason it was twice as scary when I watched the video without sound.

Anyone else thinks the sound effects kinda blow? I dunno about you I just find whispers and very faint little noises scarier than screaming and screeching.

I was terrified by Resident Evil 2... but it sounds like I really have to try some of these games you're talking about, like this Fatal Frame/Project Zero of which you speak...

I don't particulaly rate the Resident Evil games myself. They rely too heavily on petty shock value such as sudden load noises or zombies bursting through windows. Neither of these you'll find in Silent Hill or Project Zero / Fatal Frame. They both let you know what's coming before they get there, but damn that doesn't stop you getting scared. Project Zero / Fatal Frame has probably the best atmosphere in a game ever. It's so tense, you know something's coming, it's just not here yet. And you get that all the time.

well cool... yeah, hope I can find 'em fer rent...

yeah, the only memorable things about RE2 for me were moments like in the police station, in the room with the one way mirror... I'm entirely convinced the only reason the police station is in that game (or any game) is because police stations have one way mirrors... and you're 150% positive something's busting through that window any second... and I think they even let you see there's nothing in the back room, and maybe they even let you leave the room once without anything happening... so you let your guard down... and then, BAM, some disgusting critter pops through and gets all up in your grill. almost peed myself.

but in general, I think lack of knowing and understanding is a better vehicle for fear... if you don't know what's going on, don't know what to do, don't know what to expect... but always know the danger is rising... then you REALLY get scared...

I dunno... I had to turn that trailer off early out of sheer laughter. I mean, that's just hilarious. Two headed baby things with no legs and floating zombies... ROFL
And the sound effects do blow to a laughable point.
Sound effects that scared me-
When I was small, Doom Imps grunting when I couldn't see them, got my crapless
Now - Heard that scene (not even see, just heard) in Doom III where the new cyborg pinky demon rips apart that man in a bathroom. That's just creepy.
[EDIT] Just listened to it again... Teh creepeh fo' sheezeh [/EDIT]

And AVP2 did kinda get me creepy as a Marine, but when the Aliens actually came it was ruined. The music and the sounds the Aliens make when hurt aren't that great. But when it was too dark to see a foot in front of me, and all the doors were making the motion tracker ping like hell, I got kinda freaked.

System Shock 2 is the only game that ever made me jump a foot (yes, a whole foot) out of my chair. Even the AvP series can't touch that, and I doubt this could even get remotely close.

I jumped a bit when I first saw a zombie in SS2, very good game. But the only scary thing about SS2 was the whole ship's abandoned and you're the only one left and you can't find a decent weapon that won't break.

i played SH3 for a bit, but the controls on the PC were so terrible i blamed all of the scariness on the fact that my guy wouldnt swing the damn stick in the right direction, so even though it seemed to be a great game, i quit before getting very far.

SH4 looks even better and im PRAYING that it gets decent controls on the PC and not another direct gamepad to keyboard port.

nothing scary about that.

was the movie MEANT to look laggy.

System Shock 2 Scary?

Or am I just a freak of nature. There was nothing scary about SS2

Silent Hill 1 creeped me out in a Jacob's Ladder sort of way.

2 was just annoying.

Consequently I'm not likely to play another one.

I love the RE games but I'd never call them scary. Exciting (2 and Nemesis), yes, but not scary.

I'm still waiting for my first good scare in a game. The Alien head shaped pipe in AvP2 was nice and I took a shot at it but it was still a good bit away from scary.

Hate to be a pedant, but Silent Hill 3 you controlled Heather, a girl, and she starts with a knife and then gets a handgun really early on. Sounds like you were playing Silent Hill 2 instead, since the protagonist of that game's first weapon is a stick.

And everyone, Konami releases soundtracks of the Silent Hill games, meaning you will be able to find it and buy it around the time of the game's release, and also that means that ripping it from the game or downloading it is illegal, even if you own the game.

*EDIT: As to the controls, i must admit that Silent Hill plays very strangely on PC, i'll admit it plays a lot better on PS2 using 2D controls. Basically, the 3D control set up allows you to rotate your character and move based on the direction you're facing, whereas the 2D control system allows you to move in relation to where the camera is facing, in my opinion, the easiest control method.

It's the lack of the 2D option that made me dislike Silent Hill 1, it got infuriating, especially since trying to control poor old Harry Mason was a nightmare half of the time because he was too far away to notice which way he's facing.

But to anyone that's saying these games aren't scary... have you actually played any of them? I mean, sure, fair enough, you may not have been scared playing them, but i KNOW the Silent Hill games easily rival both System Shock 2 and Aliens Versus Predator 2 since i own and have played both of them.

I mean sure, a video's not much to go on really, but if you do enjoy scary games, they are well worth the purchase, especially since they also have great soundtracks, characters and storylines.

Hey, I never said it happened more than once. Computer games, try as they might, just aren't that scary.
