Dvd Woes

Or how the heck can my DVD work
Problem : My DVD players (got 2 btw) can't play my brand new Naruto DVDs I bought. It turns out they were DVD-Rs, but they were the right price anyway. So I tried playing, first disk runs ok, buts skips a bit. 2nd disc....completely freezes the DVD player so that I have to restart it. Same case with both players.
So I go back to the store, and they hand me a brand new one, and they showed to me that there isn't anything wrong with it. Played through fine.
So I bring that back home, but when I try, it STILL doesn't work.
So I need some help here, because I was wondering....do I need to buy anything like a new DVD player or do something to my DVD player to make the thing work?

My Toshiba DVD drive reads all perfectly fine. The older Sony TV DVD component doesn't read the writable ones, while the other, newer component does.

Somehow I knew that this would happen....now the problem is convincing my parents to buy a new one (how much are those anyway?)
Cyberhome (small portable, progressive scan (you need it for the DVD-R/DVD+R)) 49.99
RCA (progressive scan again) 69.99 (has fiber optic audio output reason for difference in price).
[/end store promotion] hehe

And if you ask one of the employees what progressive scan does, he'll stop to think for a moment and then say "This one costs $49.99!"

Yaar, check your DVD-R compatability, and the region of the DVDs compared to the region of your player.
