Two circles, C1 and C2 touch each other and have a common tangent line "l". The line "m" runs parallel to line "l" and touches C1 and C3. The 3 circles are mutually tangent. If C2 has a radius of 9 and C3 has a radius of 4, what is the radius of C1?
Or, for something not nearly so mathematical, but still in that vein:
3 women check into a room for which they paid $30. The next day, the manager realized that the women had been overcharged. The manager then gave the bellhop $5 to return to the 3 women. On his way, the greedy bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the 3 women 1 dollar. The 3women had now paid $9 each, for a total of #27. This, in addition to the $2 the bellhop took, makes a total of $29. What happened to the last dollar?

paid 30 dollars subtract 5 becaues of the overcharge 25 dollars paid.
Bellhop takes two, so three dollars are returned to the women. that's 28 dollars. Add back the bellhop fee and that's 30 dollars.
The thing is that, in the end, you're subtracting 3 from 30 and then adding 2 back to it.. of course that's going to leave you one dollar short.
