WTH is it?
You can notice from the title that I have no idea what this is. Like, in my school there's this National Honor Society, or NHS, which I got invited into.
I have no idea what it is, since in my last school we didn't have this. Now, I dunno if it's a school thing, country thing, whatever thing. My friends are like "It's good man" everytime I ask them what is it, but I still duno what it is!! OK, it's good, but what else?!

Looks good on a resume though.
I declined, because I'm lazy...and colleges were sending me tons of crap already.
Here's a general rule: when you get a mailing saying your name will be put into a list for colleges to see, or a list to have financial aid info sent to you (the sort of info pamphlets that colleges who like you would give you anyway to attract you), there's a good chance it's a scam. These 2 questions should help you guess which ones are worth paying the most attention to:
1: Are they asking for money (especially up-front)?
2: Do they intend on giving you any scholarship money from their own coffers if you make it into their quarter-finalist, semi-finalist, finalist, or award-getting standing? Do students who qualify initially even have to compete for it with an essay, interview, etc.?

you are correct, sir there's so many scams out there... when I was in HS, I submitted a poem to a 'poetry contest' and they weaseled me into buying the book... and I still know people who submit poetry to poetry.com, and I'm like, "you do realize it becomes their property don't you? your poetry's too good to give away to those scammers..."
...yeah, getting off-topic...
NHS DOES look good on a resume, regardless :-P
I don't want to work for any place that would hire me for being in something like that.
And I got one call from my school asking if I wanted to go to this "Gifted" school. They said it was for my SATs, me being some kind of genius or something. I think they got their paperwork screwed up(even though my SAT scores are Godly, them calling me a genius is just out of line).
Note: I got a GED because illness (namely: lyme disease, babesia, bartonella, and porphyria) prevented me from finishing high school like a good boy - don't even start to think that I'm your average dropout. I've had seniors in my math classes since elementary school, for chrissakes.
Another note: I hope the hand of God smites ticks from the face of the Earth.
Those nubs. They never do anything. It may be different at your school.
Free hospital stuff.
(unless you get BUPA, then you pay, but you get treated.)
Not that it really matters, 21 will get you into pretty much any school you'd want to go, short of being a lawyer or doctor (then you get to pay lots of loans, yay!). NHS isn't worth anything (NHS doesn't have fees or anything either, it's just go here for a monthly meeting and help tutor people...and here, 24 hours of extra community service is required...that's 48 mandatory community service hours.
NHS, ACTs and High School aren't for lazy people...college on the other hand...I barely have any homework...and aside from crazy teachers giving me 18 hour dead lines (when we're supposed to have 24 hour minimum deadlines for e-mails) on papers I already handed in....there's not much to it.
(except UWSP has the worst, most bogged down network I've ever seen...I've seen 56k modems get better pings and download speeds.
err...well, now that's off topic. The moral: don't join NHS, unless you need a little extra push for college; don't worry about your ACT/SAT score, because getting it 'exceptionally high' isn't necessary (and as long as you didn't get Ds and Cs in most of your classes you'll get at least a 23; and take as many AP classes as you're willing to do the homework for...they equal free college credit if you take the AP placement exams.
...AP Physics = Physics 209 and 210 = 10 credits = 2/3 a college semster credits.
...Foreign Language is great too, test into Language 313, pass with B- or better = 16 retroactive credits = 1 college semester worth of credits (German = fun and moderately easy!)
[individual college placements will vary by school, as will credit values]
I mean, I thought the NHS could help me boost my college application, even thought I'v got decent grades and several extra-curricular. I mean, I'm trying to go to top colleges (like, Harvard, MIT, CalTech, etc), and everything could help.

Yeah, NHS looks good on college apps. Go for it (but just don't pay exorbitant amounts of cash).
And Boggle, this is America. We don't have a national health service here, sooo... read the thread before posting. Thanks.
I had the GPA for it easily, but not enough activities
