Pardon my poor half-asleep skimming, but I just thought of something. Would it be possible to pool money between a small number of people -- say $1000 for each of 10 people, put it legally under one group/corporation/other legal-mumbo-jumbo name, and use that to invest?

Changing the course of the gameplay where things go wrong? Okay. Fine.
Changing the course of the gameplay for no reason at all? Bad.
With NS 1.0 - 1.04, NS was a slow paced, thinking, strategy game. Analyze your enemies weak points. Strike there, then exploit another of their weakness.
With NS 2.0 we had a new dynamic: fight over resource nodes instead of hives. Okay, fine. However, they fixed what was never broken: gametime. Apparently 2.0 was supposed to shrink NS matches into 25 minute matches. Not only did it largely fail at that, but it added one very pointless feature: res for kills. RFK more or less ruined the game. But it achieved what the dev team wanted: Slippery Slope gameplay, fast matches. Did it achieve what the players wanted? Have you met ANYONE that enjoys the fact that a winner can be announced with very high chances of success as early as four minutes into the game? Have you met anyone that enjoys the fact that strugging to take down an onos, or a heavy train is 100% completely pointless, knowing that in 30 seconds they've gotten so many resources they'll come right back?
I haven't.
How is NS supposed to go retail, ever, if every EVERY single version radically and completely **** up gameplay and has to be relearned?
Now my question, again, which has gone unanswered: WHY WOULD I INVEST MONEY INTO A TEAM THAT NOT ONLY HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEIR CUSTOMERS WANT, BUT DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY WANT?
Everyone loves NS and all the members of this forum think 3.0 is the best version yet, mostly everyone who played NS agrees it's the best game of all time and are encouraged by every move the dev team makes.
See how fun generalizing can be? I for one think RFK helped the gameplay, pre 2.0 the marines were completely dependent on commanders and the aliens completely dependent on gorges, how is this an ideal setting for a multiplayer game? Despite what you might think everyone believes, some people actually appreciate the fact that personal player skill equates into gameplay.
And I'll say it again, me and at least a dozen other people I know think 10-15 minutes is an ideal time for a single game of NS and utterly despise games that are more than 45 minutes long, I might as well play an MMORPG with that kind of play time requirements.

To SuperTeflon: First off: 1.04 was a TOTALLY different game than 3.0 2.0 was a TOTALLY different game from 1.04, and a changed game from 3.0. Now, let me remind you of something:
We have 10,000 new players PER DAY since 1.04. We don't have problems like Jetpack HMG rushes. There are comeback strategies, instead of the game being won by whoever got the 2nd hive first. They have put in new content THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKED. i.e. hand grenades, and many more. They have diverting strategies that vary by the map. They more diverse teams, other than the old Skulk is good. Lerk is better, fade is better than lerk, onos better than fade that it used to be. They've changed it into a game of res AND of hives. And lastly: I personally think that 3.0 is better than 1.04. Why does everyone think 1.04 better? I think its because of 2 things: What CWAG said earlier(influx of new players) and the fact that in 1.04, they hadn't ever played anything like it. That, and that a lot of people refuse to learn the new strategies, so just scream OMG 1.04 WAS BEST VERSION YOU STUPID **** NUBS!
So frankly: your wrong, and continue to change what your saying. Not to mention, just to put in for effect:
QUOTE they have proven time and again that they are willing to completely change the course of this mod's gameplay after watching people play the game and seeing for themselves where things are going wrong.
Now this is where I've always had a problem with the NS team.
QUOTE
they have proven time and again that they are willing to completely change the course of this mod's gameplay after watching people play the game and seeing for themselves where things are going wrong.
So basically: Get your facts straight before you want to insult someone, ESPECIALLY on their forum, because people like MonsE, Me, and the quite a few others that have just plain proven you wrong will pwn you with facts, AND opinions.
Onto the origionall topic here for a minute, If I happened to have 20 grand to invest into a company, UWE would be a pretty good shot IMO, chances are, if a 'Natural-Selection 2' comes out, people are going to want to buy it, knowing how popular Natural-Selection '1' is. In fact, a lot of people I've talked to seem to think that the only major wrong with NS is that it's on a very old engine(Which can also be a good thing at times, easier for low end PCs to run). So hopefully, moving up to Half-Life 2, or another engine entirely, would bring in another great influx of players, along with the current playerbase and any others the PR attracts.
And one small thing here at Teflon... If you can point out ANY game with over 100 players online at a time that has no body **** off and complaining, I will be QUITE amazed. Fact of the matter is, that when you make a game better for the masses, the minority group who loved the origionall version, is going to get more and more **** and angry, happens in all games really, at least from what I've seen.
Wouldn't NS need to purchase the Half-Life 2 engine from Valve (or the Havok engine from HL2) to actually publish their game stand alone?
To actually publish the game as an actual company and not a subdivision or dev team, like CS, wouldn't they need to create at least a minimal single player experiance? Some RTS gameplay like being the marine commander, or some alien storyline? A simple training mission (sortof like Half-Life's) would work too, except than the game is online-only, which would probably throw a couple of people off that had never heard of it before and know it's not a mmorpg or something.
Although, BF1942 sortof works like this...it still has bot fests if you want.
I don't think $20,000 (or $10,000)is going to buy the engine, and I don't think the team plans on making a single player story or training area. I wouldn't invest, if only because I don't see an openly marketable product and I also don't have the money .
Now, if I were a millionaire, than I'd donate 10 grand to the NS team...but then again, if I were a millionaire, I'd be able to pay for college and a car.
PS: I think 3.0 b3 could be fixed by making the RFKs always 1 res for kills by aliens, and 1 for humans, except 3-5 for onoses...that way the marines get better res returns when having to take down an onos...or they could take it out completely, but the game would slow down then...and Flayra doesn't want that I guess...(I don't usually go into General Discussions).

they have my 20k but only if tehy go to the serious engine:)
video games are high risk. its all about the quality of the end product. the best games are ones that feel polished, complete, and convincing. if one takes NS as a demonstration of these abilites, i would argue that unknown worlds is more worth my money than ion storm, at least judging from Deus Ex 2.

video games are high risk. its all about the quality of the end product. the best games are ones that feel polished, complete, and convincing. if one takes NS as a demonstration of these abilites, i would argue that unknown worlds is more worth my money than ion storm, at least judging from Deus Ex 2.
