Suspect: Extreme Damage

<div class="IPBDescription">recieve excessive (200+) instant damage</div> Here's the deal: I've noticed, when playing as a fade/onos, that once in a while when being shot at, you will suddenly recieve an unbelievable amount of damage with just a few rounds being shot in to you. This damage will always be enough to kill you. It happens to lower lifeforms as well, I am fairly sure, but it's hard to notice, because they die so quickly. I believe it has happened to me once as a skulk, but it's tough to be sure, because I got shot by a level 3 hmg (It appeared that I got hit with one bullet only and died; I was at 70/0.) As far as I know, this does not happen to marines. An example situation: You're a regen fade, and you go up against a few marines with turrets. You blink in, kill a couple, then start blinking out because you took some damage and are at about 200 hp. The last marine fires a few (2 or 3) rounds in to your back, and suddenly you're dead and going "WTH??"
Bug Notes:
-This is NOT caused by lag. It's happened to me in a lag-free enviornment: 5v5 game on a Jarhedz server, 0 loss, 0 choke, 50 ping, 150 fps.
-It isn't caused by some anomoly on my system. I've seen it happen to a variety of other people.
-It happens in both classic and combat.
-It seems to only happen when the marines have at least 1 weapon upgrade. I haven't seen it happen with vanilla marines.
-It seems to only happen with the marine's primary weapon. I haven't seen it happen with the pistol, knife, welder, mines, or turrets.
-It's most noticeable when you're a high end life-form, but I believe it happens to lower life-forms as well.
-When it happens, the damage is always instant. Normally when you get hit, your hp/ap will go down in steps with each bullet. It may go down really fast if you're in concentrated fire, but you can tell it's going down. With the suspected bug, your hp will suddenly jump down to 0 instantly, with the hit of a single round.
-It's most noticeable when you have a single marine firing at you, but it may happen in concentrated fire as well.
-I've only observed it to happen when you are wounded, but that doesn't mean that it can't happen when your hp is full.
-Each case when it has happened, it shouldn't have. I.e., killed by one or two bullets with easily enough hp to survive (more than 200 hp.)

Other than conditions that I noted, it seems to be totally random. I can't reliably reproduce it, yet.

    I've experienced things along these lines, the actual effect... lag, bug, whatever, I'm not sure of, I'd suggest for starters testing on a server with mp_drawdamage on.

    yeah it seems to happen to me sometimes too, you hear 1-2 bullets being fired, yet you take extraordinary amounts of damage ...

    i've killed a few onos rather quickly with an hmg cause of this... im not sure if that was it though, but they usually died in under 20 hits (with no other marines or 1-2 other hmgs and/or 8 turrets max), very strange... it seems to happen with 1 out of approximately 15 onos i kill (though some of them might just be low on health when they run out, no clue though) most of the time i was using a cat-pack when it died quickly (still had over 75 shots in my clip) so maybe its the cat-packs?

    I'd suggest you get a demo on a server with mp_drawdamage 1, mp_drawdamage won't show much if lots of bullets hit at <u>exactly</u> the same time.

    Lag compensation from say if you had one laggy person on the server might do this but i don't know how that works.

    well, with mp_drawdamage it would instantly stack the -X.X health messages and you'd see a fairly bright red message floating up your screen, so i think it would work

    could it be also that this is just becasue the alien had run out of armour and so the hp which hadn't taken much of a beating so far decreases very rapidly?

    I can only partially confirm this, but every once in a while in a combat map, a single GLer with JP can rush into a hive, and cause more than 50% damage to a hive.

    I remember it dropping down from 100% to 37% in a single grenade. Not pretty if I found out a way to do it and abuse it.

    I have had a situation as an onos when i have had 500/120 and 1 shotgun shot has taken me to 40/0

    I know that this is not related to cat packs.
    If it has something to do with a large number of bullets hitting but only seeming like a few, then it isn't playing the sounds or drawing the tracers correctly. But I don't think it's the case, because I've been dealt a good 600 damage by a lone marine in about 5 bullets. If that is the case, it means that the bug is, instead of increased damage, a giant burst of rounds fired all at once, and not being drawn properly.
    I'm going to test it out with drawdamage, however, I can't figure out how to reliably reproduce it, so it will probably take some time to get a demo. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Ok I have seen a similar issue in another mod, Sven Coop. It pops up all the time when creating self-controlled func_tanks (custom turrets by mapper). It'll kill it's first enemy fine, but if it kills its target and has to wait a few seconds before a new target comes into view, it will "save up" shots and fire them all at once at the new target when it becomes visible. The effect is a good 25 tracer rounds being seen fired at this one enemy who is promptly insta-gibbed (even on a listenserver, not lag related).

    I know these are completely different situations, however it's not hard to imagine that a similar thing could be happening to marine weaponry, where the shots are being saved up inbetween bursts and released all at once...

    Yeah, this happened to me once, too.
    It was on a our clanserver we had weapons ups 1; Armor 2 and nufin else.
    i just killed a lerk with my LMG and had 8 shots left in my magazine, the buddy who went with me was dead. I just wanted to reload, when a fade comes round the next corner. So i dont have any time, i press 'q' (kill for me) shoot the 8 rounds in him, whip out my pistol. fire two shots and he DIES!
    well, im sure not all of the LMG shots hit hi, since i was dodging and in panic!

    Not fun was that i dies 1 sec after killing him cause of suicide <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well he accused me of cheating, since he had full HP/AP and level 3 Carapace.
    i told him that this must be a server glitch, but he left!

    Good(bad though) thing that im not alone.

    Another instance of this happening is i have killed a fully healthed lerk in 11 LMG bullets with no upgrades, and yes they did all hit <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I have seen the shotgun do 220+ damage, It seems a bit random however, I have done dead on shots that did 60 damage, and the next shot without me moving or the target moving and it performed 220+ damage, then 60 damage, 60, 60, 180, etc.

    I've hit skulks directly in the face with a shotgun (lvl isn't really relevant is it), at quite a close distance, only to be killed a second later. I don't know if this is related, but sometimes it can be quite bad, taking maybe 2 or 3 nearly dead on shots to kill a skulk.

    my guess is that its got something to do with the shotgun hitting and not actually registering, so then the 176-220 (or whatever the upgrades do i dont even know anymore) damage gets saved up for the next hit, then when you hit it again it does all 440 (or whatever) damage, 1 thing to try might be to shoot a shotgun like that, make sure it has that unregistered hit, and then try getting an hmg and shooting that same alien, though its worked with non-shotguns as well, and i've done it with a single lmg to an onos before too, and it seems that its actually one out of every 8 onos i shoot with my hmg (and of course every time i have time to unload my entire clip) dies in less than 20 shots, usually when i have <40 shots in my clip (1 time i had 35, unloaded about 20 of them and it died), and im pretty sure it was from full health, though at the time we had no comm and noone could actually tell (+ another marine was shooting with a gl but only did ~100 damage cause the grenades didnt blow up right ontop of him)..
    and maybe there is an accidental head hitbox that does 50x damage? someone might try decompiling a model to see... i would but i dont have the proper tools and i have no clue how (i just make maps that arent even that good)

    You don't need to decompile a model to check the hitboxes, all you need is HLMV (google for it). All the models have A LOT of small hitboxes so that the the shape of player is accurately represented.

    However for some reason many of the alien models are a mess of overlapping hitboxes because each little detail part has been given it's own hitboxes and then the bigger main body part hitboxes overlap them completely anyway...

    It looks like they were automatically generated or something, but could definately do with a clean up imo.

    HMMM...... overlapping hitboxes could have somthing to do with this.... because hitting in a place were the boxes overlap could yeild 2x - 3x damage pre bullet.

    and holy crap!!!! yes the hit boxes ont he modles need to be cleaned up... looks like somne just drew a buncha random boxes all over LOL.

    This doesn't just happen by 2 or 3 or 4 marine's. It usually happen's when you have about 6+ marine's. LMG doe's about 10dmg unupgraded, with a high rof. So 6 marine's would shoot out 60dmg on contact, with the extremely rof and could dish out about 3,000dmg in a full clip (if they all hit). It's not lag, overlapping hitboxes, its just you literally take damage so fast you become overwelmed and die instantly. Don't expect 3 HMG's are going to make your HP/Armor go down slowly so you can see what you're at. You're going to take 6,000dmg from 50 round's if they all contact you. Same with shotguns, 180dmg nailing you. 3 marines vs Fade = Instant death.

    Also these stories about killing Onos and Fade's with 20 rounds. It just means they had very low HP unless you happen to have depleted uranium shells.

    Someone has reported being <b>alone</b> with <b>8 bullets</b> in their LMG and killing a full HP fade with just that and 2 pistol shots...

    Just read the other god damn posts instead of calling other people liars ffs... (in reference to your original edited post)

    The fade in question stated he had full HP and lvl 3 carapace, and left the server because he though the bug reporter was cheating...
