Easy step to play without using steam
After you install 3.0 on Steam just go to steam>steamapps>(your email adress folder)>half-life
When you reach there just copy and paste nsp folder in your half life folder. Not your NS folder.
And you should be able to play the few WON servers availiable.

Also, you should probably spend the effort on something more useful, for example:
Find out how to get your Steam running if it isnt.
Steam hasnt been running for a year,
more likely you got VAC banned

Then I went to their technical support and found out that that if you create multiple accounts to register into steam, but use the same CD-Key it will not work. Since it's already registered into their database. Dunno if my original account was deleted. When I entered my email adress it said no account uses that adress.
People that have NS won cant play on steam and vice versa.
Everybody is prepared to play on steam and making in compatible with won will just split the community.
That's good to hear

Most people seem to like WON over steam, i for one will stop playing NS when it gose steam only. And i can't be the only one, think it of it that way before you say "death to won".
On occasion, the resolution switch from WON browser to the game made the text in the game go wonky, or I lost 3/4 of the screen.
Also, my pings are usually better now.

What? I still have 2.01 installed to won and 3.0 installed to steam, and I can run both just fine.
Nothing wrong with supporting the more stable system.
bah don't do that Flayra it will jsut split the community and cause more problems
You know, I had this same problem. For a while I was SO **** off at Steam, because I knew that Valve would not, no chance in nine hells that *Valve* would offer some help, restore my CD-key. Valve, and especially the ones who are responsible of the CD-keys, is just a bunch of you-know-what.
Then I remembered that I had created an account long while back, when I had given a try to Steam. Still feeling **** off, though, because if I had not remembered it...
No. Just no.
WON will go down when VALVe feel that Steam is up and working properly, and most likely supported by more games. That's why i don't foresee WON going down until Half-Life 2 or CS:CZ's release. NS is, if you excuse the term, worthless, in a way. VALVe are gaining no profit by NS, there's no logic in basing your decisions on something you neither own nor have any control over.
And as for whoever it was trying to "emotionally blackmail" the community.... You're trying to make us feel bad because you can't play on Steam? Really, nobody cares, one less person whining while we're off playing on Steam.
If it's not working then get help you lazy nubs ^^
there are still people (like me) who will not install steam
if i have to leave a well running thing and install another just to keep things running as well as theyve done before, then i´m sad to say i´m gone
and with me the most popular german ns server of the last month

i, feel your pain
meaning i have the excat same problem. But in the past i remenber i could make mulitple accounts in 1 CD-Key, at least my friend did.
Help me.
So we need to play NS 3.0 online without steam.
Can we play LAN wihtout this steam???
Of course Steam has been running for a year, first Steam beta release was in early January of last year :x
The community IS split. Once I'm forced to, I'll try steam, try HARD and give it every chance to work... if it won't, I'm (obviously) outta here. Reading people's 'horror' stories about Steam, I find it sad that we have to go thru all over again, what many of us already went through with WON long ago, just to keep playing...

It's really not that hard for Steam to work now. I reformated earlier this month and all I had to do was download the small, just Steam, installer and login like I had always done before. Steam didn't have a problem with this and soon downloaded all of the content I needed very quickly (maxed out my connection). Then all that was required was to copy my game configs, favourites and scripts over and I was ready to go.
If you're on 56k there is really no excuse not to try Steam either. You can get the huge 700 MB installer on CD and download the small updates needed over night, like you might have done under WON for game updates. If your connection breaks (after 2 hours, perhaps) you will not lose anything you have downloaded either, it will safely be in the cache file.
Which brings me onto custom content, which is fully supported under Steam. All you do is place the custom content in the same place you would put custom files under WON and Steam uses those instead of the ones in it's chache and this chache acts like a back-up incase you install a crappy model you will always have the original.
All in all I like Steam, incase you haven't noticed .

like it or not the community is already split, there is no reason to not try to ease the slower part of the community into STEAM if it is practical, at some point they will have to switch or stop playing either way, so at that point, if they cant keep up, then that's just thier problem.

to stop playing because you don't like steam, a replacement for won that is almost at the same level, is just petty. If you want to be petty, why should it be up to the rest of the comunity to stop you? at some point won is going away, whether you like it or not. You are perfectly capable of continuing to play, you are simply refusing to because you don't want too. Developers don't make games for people who don't want to play them, they make games for people who do want to play them.
[edit] *grammer
I did just that earlier in the week to play the new NS beta.
Steam is, IMO, buggy, slow, bloated, and virtually unusable. Some Steam driven mods swelled to almost double their original size for no reason.
My pings shot right up, my framerates dropped ALARMINGLY (to a slideshow at times), and starting a game under Steam was JUST TOO LONG-WINDED.
...I build PCs fairly regularly, so I tend to know when something is right or not :-}
Some simple things in the Steam installer should have been resolved (like keeping existing screen settings) and it telling me the halflife font can`t be found.
I deleted the f***in` thing within ~1 hour of installation, and fired off a letter to Valve to tell them exactly what I thought of it. I was forced to hard-reset at least 6 times within this period due to it locking up my entire system while connecting to a server or simply checking settings in the options dialogue. My system is 100% stable under WON.
Back to All-Seeing-Eye for me, and if HL2 is Steam only, they can count it as a sale lost.
