<div class="IPBDescription">stupid Interplay >:(</div>Sad news for anybody who actually likes games. Black Isle, developers of Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment, and who had been working on Fallout 3, has been shut down.

Why do companies always shut down the parts that make money!? :X

Boss: Ok lets start the meeting

Interplay guy 1: We have awesome series! Baldur's gate, Fallout, Icewind Dale, people are eating this stuff up!

Interplay guy 2: You know what this means right?

Interplay guy 1: DEATH TO BLACK ISLE

Boss: Now lets get back to making those crappy games

I'm changing my plans for taking over the world, this new addition finally gives me a possible way of raising the funds.

Step 1: I pursue my career, in the process becoming a pretty good programmer and getting to know plenty of other good ones out there.
Step 2: While still an unknown startup company, I anonymously buy the rights to the Fallout, X-Com, Baldur's Gate, and System Shock series simultaneously at dirt-cheap prices, striking mass fear and confusion in the industry.
Step 3: I gather up a team with my buddies and make kick-butt sequels to the whole lot of them, and rake in the dough.
[edit]Better yet, I'll even put them all in one $200 boxed set. It'll be labeled "The If-you-don't-pick-us-up-off-the-shelf-right-now-you-are-a-<i>pathetic loser</i> Pack"

The loss of another great team...'tis a sad day indeed.

I don't know, it just seems as if Interplay is trying to commit economic suicide. It's common for companies do do things not everyone will like -- Microsoft, Macintosh, EA Games, etc. do it all the time. But recently, Interplay has been the only company I've seen that manages to anger the vast majority of its best fans, and do so repeatedly without learning from it.

[edit]So...other than the blasphemous pile of sh -- um -- "software" known as the next console Fallout game (FOBOS), what <i>is</i> Interplay planning on making within the next decade?
[edit2]Just read on <a href='http://www.duckandcover.net' target='_blank'>Duck and Cover</a> that they plan on making a sequel to this "Fallout" console game. Someone needs to grab these guys and extract some DNA; if there was ever an opportunity to find which gene causes ignorance, this is it. Even Chuck Cuevas, the project lead of FOBOS, actually quit his job after being the scapegoat of all Fallout fans. What on earth are they <i>doing</i> over there?

Great team? All the good designers left that company like a year ago, and J.E. Sawyer a few months ago. I don't think any of the people who were a part of the first Fallout worked at BIS until this piece of news. So I doubt Fallout 3 would have been any good. Either way, Troika is still making a Fallout inspired RPG. Who better to tackle the job than original designers of Fallout?

I'm just wondering where Chris Avellone went. I think he left BIS during the late production of IWD2.

Edit: Kind of ironic that I heard this news while listening to the Fallout soundtrack. Great music.

    That was my plan!

    We should combine forces!

    Still you missed Bullfrog.

I take this as a good news bad news situation, it means Interplay is closer to a total sell-off of all the licences, meaning that Troika may be able to purchases the licence. EA just f*** up when thjey do this, I mean NOBODY not even EA know who owns the SS licnece and Iv asked Peter Mol... about DK and all he said was "Its out of my hands".

Probably just the rabid fanbois and then some Mac users, understandably. I'm so tired of hearing "selling out to..." insert whatever fetish you have. Bungie is still a team consisting of largely the same people I've heard. And even if Halo was hyped to the moon and back, a good chunk more than it deserved, it WAS a good game.

The real sacrifice made with that deal was the Myth franchise, which Take 2 took over and had their ways with. You should divert your myopic foaming-at-the-mouth fanboism towards Take 2 of all.

Now, that said, I will lament the closure of BIS with the rest of you. Fallout 1 & 2, PlaneScape, etc. They were responsible for so many good rpg's. I think Interplay went into the gutters as Fargo left and Titus bought it. Interplay is being killed off by comitee. Some french career mongrel that has studied Pie Chart 101 at Ecole This-or-That in paris has figured out that the Big Money is in the field of mimicing all the other companies in making trite, anonymous games for consoles.

Bungie used to be good, now they suck, is there something hard to understand about that? If you don't consider accepting money to completely butcher what was going to be a great game so that it can be an "Xbox exclusive" selling out, well, thats good for you, Halo turned out to be a "good game" in the same way that Daikatana did, and I can't help but think it wouldn't have turned out that way if they had stuck with PCs/Apples. If you love Halo so much that you can't stand somebody insulting it, you really shouldn't be calling people "fanbois" (a fanboy of what? MS? Bungie? Apple? please explain...).

[edit] I'm pretty sure "SS" stands for System Shock, and "DK" stands for Dungeon Keeper. [/edit]

    1) The original halo, which was on the verge of completion before Bungie were crushed under a giant wad of Microsoft money (can't blame either party too much I suppose; MS wanted a good game, Bungie, like most developers, needed the cash) was a game that would've really kicked the whole games market up a notch. It was so ahead of it's time and it was a multiplayer focussed game originally. Don't get me too wrong, I like the new one but what happened to the other team being the covenent? Where did the giant landscape maps go that you'd fight over Tribes style? Why did they take out the herds of natural wildlife (some of the larger ones you could even ride on =D )?
Oh that's right... they were torn out so that it would be a better 4-8 player game for the xbox -.-

By the time they'd finished converting and rewriting the game for the bemoth box it wasn't really 'OMG' cutting edge anymore... it wasn't revolutionary (though the AI is still somewhat impressive) and the PC market kinda just ignored it because it was on console and continued to develop utter poop in the face of nigh on non-existant competition.

    2) the Games <b>industry</b> worked fine until it started being run by money grubbing idiots with no idea or love for the product they manufacture. Many people say the same about the music <b>industry</b> and the film <b>industry</b> for various reasons. The point is the money people are in charge now and the money people generally ruin everything because they're more interested in selling clones and 'FIFA 20980384: We changed a player name' than gameplay, fun or any of the other reasons people actually like games =/

    3) if you don't know what an abbreviation means just ask, immac (silky smooth legs =D ). There's no need to be embarrassed or try to be all annoyed ^^
~taps immac on the nose and giggles~

Fallout, never really got into it. But the Baldur's Gate series was my favourite RPG series ever made. Ever. Sure, it ended, but a sequel might be possible yet (Note that I never actually played TOB, so I am missing lots of facts. Actually, I could never finish that final fight with Irenecus even if I cheated!)

I do not own a console, but even if I did I would absolutely not buy any games called "Fallout" from Interplay. After this I'm actually not going to buy any game at all from them, ever.
