My suggestion: Morrowind. Yes, I'm fully aware it's single-player only, but look at the benefits: it's got many of the same cool stuff and HUUUGE places to explore, all without the internet connection problems, random nerfing of assorted objects, having to camp for stuff, or (most importantly) monthly fees.
i have cable so connection is no problem here
Another possiblity is UO (Ultima Online).
You can do pretty much anything you want to do in that game. Kill other players, dungeon hunt, fish, COOK, yes! COOKING, be a mage, warrior...a mage warrior..an archer mage..a theif..whatever...you can even own a house and customize your own one too
I tried to make my house look like it's been infested ..
want pics posted? tell me lol
You can also download a proggy called UO Gateway which allows you to play on Free Shards! but they aren't run by the ppl who make the game..just player run servers...but they dont have 8707051 ppl playing on 'em...and get laggy at times..
http://uo.stratics.com
the biggest UO website..i forgot the offical one..but it should be on stratics..

Not all that graphics pwning, but the new update coming out in Jan. or Feb. should make it much better. I'm trying to get people to join my clan so I can go into the wildy (PK area) and not get killed. Later on, I will make an army of newbehs to destroy al those who oppose me. I mean, for every one you kill, three more pop up in his place. Ph33r teh Army of N00bs!
If you have the right skills and items.
You truly can.
I take it Pulse isn't a fan of MMORPGs lol.
I've been playing Asheron's Call 2 (Bought the game after wearing out my trial), and it's a lot of fun. The player count isn't very high, but it's sorta like NS now: All the lamers and **** are gone, all the fun, nice people are left. The graphics are superb, and Turbine has done a great job on releasing lots of content in the big monthly patches.
The skill system is second to none, using a very innovative open-ended approach: There are classes, and they're restrictive in their own way, but YOUR idea of a Tumerok healer might be 100% different then someone else of the same level and XP, because you can tweak it through various skill trees as well. As far as I'm concerned, there's really no going back to silly 'ol "classes" after this. (I think Morrowind used a similar, but much less complex system, but Morrowind was boring as pewp and I only got to level 12 or something before removing it from my harddrive). The only downside is that there's less content then you'd expect, but the open-ended nature of the game can leave some niche for everyone (For example, I sometimes hire myself out as a scout to find unique things for parties). There's very few NPCs at this time, so it can be a bit like SWG without the super-stupid 'dancing' skill... . Did I mention the graphics are awesomely superb (A few wierd glitches, but it's very cool looking). Players actively shape how the game turns out every month.
Everquest... bleh. There's really nothing unique here except for the 'unique' expansion packs they shove up your **** every 2 weeks. The graphics suck (I was at my friends house playing. "Help, I'm getting eaten by this brown triangle, what do I do!?". He looks at the screen. "Oh, that's a bat."). I played a character for a while and got bored out of my mind. The UI blows, I got tired of 3/4 of the screen being covered by silly menus and icons which I had no ****ing clue as to what they meant.
Worlds of Warcraft... what in hell makes Blizzard think they know how to make an MMORPG? Or even an RPG for that matter? Diablo was in no way an RPG. Just because you have stats doesn't mean you're role playing. It was just an action adventure game, like Zelda. I think of it as the counter-strike of RPGing. Everyone that plays it brags that they RPG and everyone that knows a true RPG just laughs. I mean, look at westwood. "Gee we made those great RTS games, I know, let's make an FPS game!" Too bad said game was a joke. Furthermore, they sort of... suck... at keeping games up to date (1.10 diablo! Weee!!!).
As for Morrowind, Marik, bleh. The beginning of the game sucked to no end. Absolutely no story to build upon, all I know is that I've been released from jail and thrown on some rotten rock, and I have to deilver a package to some pompus **** like I'm a FedEx delivery man. I got real tired REAL fast of walking around and suddenly this 'Cliff Racer' feels a need to attack me from 4 miles away, then chase me for 20 minutes while making the most god-awful irritating sound ever burned on a CD. Then, when I got the package to him, all he wants me to do is 'prove myself' (Man I've never heard THAT one before!) by killing something. The only satisfaction I got out of this game was throwing the package into the lake and slaughtering the villagefolk, robbing their homes, and exploiting the stupid bugs (weee 1000000 strength boost).
Personally I love morrowind, I spent 3 hours just studying the Dwemer (Dwarf) in the game, the game is much more fun when you roleplay your character. I roleplay an archeologist.
Face Of Mankind is just entering testing stages and is similar to neocron.
