I sent him a long winded email and ended with this:

Har Har, I'm so fricken sick of people bashing video games, the most annoying thing is that articles of this nature are written so frequently and they all are complete nonsense containing the same general information, yet they still get all kinds of hype and attention.

Hey, I have a brillant idea:

PARENTS SHOULD CONTROL THEIR OWN DAMN KIDS!

I'm 18. I buy my own games. I'm in the MAJORITY here. Stop infringing on my rights because some stupid parent won't control their kids!

Bill O'Reilly had an interesting point in this aspect to rap music: companies actually DO have a responsibility to children, since the majority of the rap target audience in America come from broken homes. You can take responsibility without restricting rights for all people though.

Same thing with video games.
Make it illegal to sell or rent M games to minors. Awesome!
Special interest groups want to pressure violent game makers to avoid prime time advertising? Sure!
Government wants to restrict content? Not cool.
Ban violent games? No way.

I wouldn't worry about this sort of thing. Its just like back in the 1950's when people would say that rock and roll turns their kids into little trubble makers. Its just the newest in a long line of scapegoats.
I'v been playing games since I was 5 or 6 stuff like Wolfenstien3D and Comander Keen (okay thats not really violent) and I'm not a violent person at all.
And what was with them picking on Postal 2? That game is only as violent as you make it. In the demo your objective is to go get milk thats all, what the player does in the game world is his/her own choice.

{EDIT} Oh and I almost forgot, I think video games help some people they are great for dealing with stress and if you're playing a game you're not outside doing something stupid.

What annoys me is that here in Australia, they refuse to create an R rating for games. We have R and X rated movies and the like, but games like GTO3 just get refused classification. The Australian version of GTO3 had no blood or prostitutes, which prompted some fast hacking work But it did make many gamers here angry.

Why? Because most gamers are between 18 - 25. We are adults. The government reckons it's fine for us to watch Arnold blast guys away by the truckload, so why the heck can't we run over some pedestrians A common misconception, which is what these mothers believe, is that gamers are all kids. We're not!

Now how many mothers do you see saying "Ban R rated movies, because our kids are in danger". Not many. Because it's bloody hard (pun intended ) for a kid to get those movies. People won't hire them out. The same thing should occur with games. I don't think a 13 year old should be playing GTO3; that's why it has an R rating. Same way a 13 year old shouldn't be watching Kill Bill.

As has been said, many parents just don't pay enough attention to the television and games their kids play. If they took the time to actually monitor what their kids were doing and take steps to make sure their 12 year old is playing Sim City instead of Doom 3 and watching Transformers instead of South Park, this entire issue wouldn't even come up.

Ryo, this is America (well, at least that's how I see it).

Parent's intend to do the minimal amount of work to actually be a parent.

Ok, i've played StarCraft since I was 14. Do you see me going out, genetically engineering my own breed of aliens and then releasing them upon the general population for my own amusement? NO! Why? Because I haven't quite gotten the snake-tail for the Hydralisk right. Once I solve that little bug, FEAR MY ZERG HYDRALISK ARMY!

I've played Half-Life/Rainbow Six since I was 14. Do you see me going out and going on violent shooting spree's? NO! Why? Can't bloody afford to go to jail quite yet. In 60-70 years I can but i won't hurt people because my mind knows the difference between the real world and the "dream" world that is video games. Of course, games have taught me the basics of actually holding a firearm, namely a USP and how to do the smooth CS reload animation movement.

Agh! The author of that article probably thinks Harry Potter teaches people how to cast hexes and spells...(Wingardiem Leviosa, Cruciatus, Alohamora...maybe) and that D&D is converting kids to Satan.

I have had no more violent tendacies than I originally had when I started gaming ('round 4, 5). See, when you're biased, anything you can find wrong with the opposite, you seize it and ponce (D:). Like if you really hated a guy, and he gave you his paper to correct, wouldn't you mark every single mistake down, doing all it is in your power to get him lower than a C?! I would =)

You see, that's what they're trying to do, blame killing on gaming, but it isn't working--how does gaming teach you how to kill? A gun is heavy--firing it is worse, and how do they even get them in the first place? Do they ignore how like, the parents left them unguarded around firearms? Blame them, not us!
