I walked around as a lerk for 15 min, jumping now and again, thinking how much lerks suck because they can't even climb walls. Before I found out that lerks can fly.....
my first thought was; weeeeeeee, im an alien with a rine model buggy, got kicked pretty soon freaking the rines off in their base
First question: "where or how can i buy other weapons???" "hey, i nedd ammo... where can i find/buy it???" lol
so funny to remembers this things...
I played the first day it came out so I was a noob at the same time as everyone else.
My first game was Nancy. 1 v 1. 800 ping. I was marines...
I looked at the CC. "Ooo. Command Console. I'll give that a shot." I jumped in and messed about a little while the alien was trying to figure out what to do It was hidiously laggy but seemed fun.
Loved it ever since
Seriously, it took me a month or two to bother installing it again.

Same here, a friend had told me a bout it so I tried it out but didn't like it. 2 months later I was bored one day, so I ran it and joined a server. I was astonished by all the teamwork, especially after playing cs for so long.
My first game was on eclipse. The server was running on some guys cable modem, and this was 1.0 so our pings rarely dropped below 300. I joined marines because the tooltip recommended them for new players (before this I had only ever played one round of CS and swore not to play online again). For the first few minutes I ran around looking for a way out of marine spawn It sounds silly, but someone had put mines along the doorframes and I thought the lasers would kill me Once I made my way out of spawn I promptly got chomped by a skulk ("Cool - it walks on walls!"). About then, our commander left and I took over. We had about twenty turrets with all the upgrade buildings (no upgrades though - I don't think we even knew how to get them), so I started recycling buildings to drop our ping slightly. I recycled a siege and one guy gos "OMG! What are you doing? That's our biggest gun!". About then an Onos lumbered into the base, and amazed all the marines ("It's massive!"). Just before I left the conversation went something like this:

QUOTE

Marine: "Everytime that onos comes in, my ping goes up to 600! Onos: "I R teh lag monster!!!!"

It was incredibly funny at the time...
As I entered the ready room for the very first time I looked around and see that everone was already playing. I walked around the ready room aimlessly until I found a glowing sign that said "Random Team" and I braced myself and jumped into it.
*Spectator Mode* *You are now respawning in...*
I patiently wait to respawn, thinking what is going to happen. As I respawned the sound of the infantry portal spawning me was music to my ears...
Until I was gored by an Onos two seconds after I had spawned...
After that the words "Team 2 has Won The Game!" Appeared on the screen.
Ah yes, that is my very first experience of playing NS 1.0, and I never ever had a better game since.
in the first 5 mins seeing something like "lookatmemynamehasmuinbersforlettersarenticool: OMG noob team we lose already you all suck etc etc. leaves game"
it was pretty funny.
the game reminds me of starcraft and is the closest thing to a team game which is damn cool
Well I played it... found it okay... found it way to damn hard ot hit hte skulks... So after a while I found some starcraft models and stuff and put em into the game (first game I ever used custom stuff in) got better... Went back to DoD and Ragnarok Online, read the forums on hwo scary the game could get, went and played, Is til lremmeber what got me hooked, a zergling rushing down the hall at me. I fire a ten round burst all hits the head as it leaps, iot hits me dead. So awesome looking yet scary.
First time on Marines : (ns_bast) Spawned out, thought it was uber cool looking, and constantly asked for ammo, and was asking things such as, what does this sat dish do ? can the commander watch tv ? man i wanna try it. after finaly getting my ammo and out of base, acting like i would be in a real life war, crouchin around corners, walking everywhere, using my ears and tactics ive learned before... i walked around double res area (Atmo).. and jumped up to see what was going on, i turned around, and met face to face with this huge thing, soiled myself... and jumped only to be knocked into the wall, then killed. *WTH !?* then i went to change clothes.
First time as comm : (ns_tanith) Team: Build 2 ips and get the armory down ! Me: "..." Team: COME ON NUB ME: "..." Team: Build the Infantry Portal stupid **** Me: *finds it* *drops* Wow i must be a good comm, what do you guyz think ?? i was born to do th*Commander has been ejected*.. oh fk you guyz

After a while of playing and figuren it out, i started to link it, after 2.0 i stoped playing cs.. hasnt touched it since... woot.. ns forever baby
Some of your first impressions of NS were funny... Did you have a better time playing NS for the first few minutes then compared to CS or some of the other mods?
Sorry for going offtopic but I don't see why people bash CS whenever they get the slightest chance, you'd think it was made by "micro$oft" or something .
If you play NS on some random server it is very likely that you will get too see almost as little team work as you do on some random server in CS. CS is quite simplistic and now relatively bug free(except 1.6 where VALVe seems to have introduced a ton of new bugs with the shield), it doesn't strictly require as much team work to win as in NS but it is ALOT more fun when people actually try to cooperate(try to accomplish the objective not just get the leetest score), this is where variety and replay value comes in. NS doesn't need as much teamwork to be fun as there is more variety than in CS.
Unless you have played a good game of CS where people actually cooperate please don't bash CS, bash the people who play CS .
edit: "you'd think they it" what was I thinking?
When I first started playing NS I was astounded by the fact that I knew a hell of a lot more about the game already then the people who had been playing longer did, because I read the god damn manual. I even played lan by myself for a while so I knew what was going on. I started in the first version and I was only a day or two past release because to be honest I forgot all about the game because it took so long. I remember when NS was fun, now it's turned into one giant clan scene, which is annoying as hell.
I read about NS in PC Gamer- it was mod of the month.
My first game was on Tanith, in 1.04, as Marines. I spent the first 10 or so minutes reading the Autohelp Tips, and trying to use the Protolab to get Jps, because I had played Tribes before (it looked like an inventory station! I wasn't myself!).
After wandering around for a while, I went to the website and read the manual... and was NSPlayer no more.
Until I went Aliens, that is. I still had autohelp on, so I stared at the hive trying to use it (it said use it to warp). I looked at the DCs, and was wondering why I couldn't evolve more than 1 upgrade/chamber. I followed the tooltips, and evolved to gorge. Dropped a Rt and wandered off becuase I didn't know how to use the 'use' key on it.
And now I laugh at NSPlayers... I feel bad about myself now
Hrm. Got the mod put on a cd for me last halloween. Went home, installed, started her up, and hated the game. Didn't play again until about November 17th, when I realised it wasn't half bad. Still never really liked it too much, so all it took was 2.0 to get me to stop playing. Oh well, that's how it goes.
Honestly, I was astounded - I mean I always thought CS looked pretty good....but CS is in a dire state compared to NS. Long live NS
a friend told me about it, and he started up a listen server so we could check it out together. some nublar joined up with us, and was the sole alien against us 2 marines. I didn't understand what you had to have to get an arms lab/obs/proto, I always tried to drop a proto first.
First impression: This doesn't look at all like the HL engine... If I didn't know this was a HL mod, I'd think it was UT 2003 or something
Well, I knew how RTSes worked and all that, so I jumped in without looking too carefully at the manual/slideshow (this was just after 2.01 was released). Went... marines(?) first. Kept wondering what the heck all these acronyms are =P Then I tried to figure out how to get health, went to the armory and got healed with the ArmoryHeal plugin, so I thought all armories gave health for a while The most confusing part was that I thought the marines could build buildings and get weapons for themselves... Didn't guess how little rines were actually capable of doing Skulkies scared me. They kept eating me! And hiding on ceilings... Mean old skulkies.
Read the manual, slideshow about 5 times. Went back to playing.
Aliens: The res thing really confused me. Marines made a bit more sense, but this was just odd. What do I use this res for? How do I get this res? How do I get level 3 upgrades? (thought you had to use the upgrade button 3 times to get the level 3 upgrade ) Wallclimbing was freaking sweet, and I flew around for a bit doing nothing as a lerk , because flying was just cool.
