I always go Human hive and mass production, allying to the University and sometimes the Spartans or Morganites. Depends how close they are - I don't like Spartans on my borders.

Expansion pack is nice, but balance is a bit off - the Pirates are virtually untouchable early game, and the Aliens make it too easy. Fun in single player but imho touch too abusive in MP.

Great game, automation isn't too bad, base building isn't as tedious as you'd think, and the research tree had me sitting for a while trying to tweak out my best units (usually sacrificing armour for better guns).

Gaians are hellishly annoying with their mindworms (not as bad as cult of planet mind you) so I try to outtech them to the centauri research goals, while trading them with University.

Then its the rush to nerve stapling

Edit - imho civ 3's greatest strength is that trade is ENCOURAGED. I once had a game as the aztecs where we were on an island with only dyes. I teched up my shipping, uncovered half the map, and traded maps, contact knowledge, and dyes to the other races in return for significant technological and research gains.

Far better than civ 2, where there was no real difference between the races.

Here's a good strat for you alpha centauri fans.

When you're about to kill a civilization, at the point where they say "Ok! I'll give you all my technology (0) and all of my gold (4) for a pact if you'll let us live in peace!" you ACCEPT! That's right. We all know you could wipe them out, but it is so much more enjoyable to have them as pets that do your bidding. After you reach that point, there is nothing that will make them leave your pact. This, and the fact that they obey unconditionally to whatever requests (research, money, bases, vendettas against other factions).

I like having Miriam as my pet. Yeah, you know she swallows?

    are you kidding?

Civilization is clearly one of the very best games. I'd still prefer civ1 over any other game

If there has been a race in Civilisation 3 that has really **** me off at some point, like burning one of my colonies back in the iron age or something, or declaring war on me for absolutly no reason (there is a special place in hell reserved for the Mongols I swear), when I get around to wiping them out I leave one city. One pathetic, flea-bitten, disease ridden dump which I will surround completly by troops. And I leave them there, suffering for centuries.

You see, I'm a firm believer in scientific studies. In experiments, you need subjects. And I've found that the best way to test a nuclear device is to use it against a city.

Oh yes. Taste the 60 megatons of my eternal hatred for you Ghengis Khan

See, the problem with coal (and most tactical resources) is that if the civ is using them all they can't trade them. Unfortunately, Germany was using all the coal, all the freaking time. Eventually, I made like 30 tanks and just went up north and beat the crap out of him (took a while to get the tanks situated though)...captured me some coal....and then it got depleted....bah, full of crap).

All the Civilization games cheat...especially 2. They know Exactly where you are...no matter what...In Civ 2 you can even switch players to see the comps map....I switch to one, and a direct path through the sea, right towards my base, 5 games in row.

Does anyone know where I can reaquire my Alpha Centauri demo? I tried to find one before, but I just ended up finding a german version that doesn't exactly work on this computer...

And, is Miriam some black haired chick? It seems familiar.

Okay, the puerto rican lady was the dark haired one and Miriam is the red headed bible extremist....All sorted out now; Thanks SMAC demo!

Sure, it's cool, and the AI doesn't seem to cheat quite as much as in Civ games....but there's no where to get it anymore...I don't enjoy ordering online...Takes to long and you're not guaranteed to get it ...Although the one thing I did order, System Shock 2, did come (well, AvP:GE too, but that was only online and it was from a company - and it came with the nifty face hugger thing, with suctioncup-to-glass action).

Are there more than just the one planet? Seems a lot like Civ 2 if you just sit around on the planet building bases...well, not that much like Civ, with the distinct factions, terraforming, sea bases, unique unit creation and council aspects...but I demand a solar system .
