Alpha Centauri...

Anyone remember the now rather old game Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri, I boosted it up again today and I love it.

Playing as university, and well my tech and economic levels are way above the rest, I can soon trancend (dont know if I want to though). I recently declared war on the gainans and they are **** when I blew there capital up with a planet busters. I need to stop using those though else my capital will get flooded, and I cant get the damn council to agree on launching a solar shade! Anyway, My worst unit active is like twice the power of the gainans best units, its just those frigging hordes of mind worms that are giving me a hard time!

As a final note, I definatly think Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri is one of the best science fiction strategy games of all time, now I need to get my hand on alien crossfire, mumble mumble muble...

    argh.

    They are Gaians!

I love that game. I once wiped out 4 out of the 6 and then got stalled because as I was making my advance, the enemy closest to me kept on using Bio-attacks that ended up in over 3 millenia of sanctions. Though I did love having my flying Psychic attack vehicles.

I just tried out the game recently and while it's fun, I never had the patience to play it through :> micro-managing teraforming gets tedious, and automated formers were pretty dumb... and I'm a perfectionist and could never really create a *perfect* base...

Yeah, play Civ 2 then, the workers didn't have an automate function, THAT gets tediuos.

I was always the university (because KNOWELDGE IS POWER!) and I hated the believers, I always went after them first. What I liked to do was get the Space Elevator secret project and then drop pod hover tanks all over the place. DEATH FROM ABOVE!!

There is a game pack for $20 that has both Alpha Centauri and Aline Crossfire on it (as well as Red ALert 2, Tiger WOods golf, and Simcity 3000 unlimited), its called the Laptop pack or something.

    Miriam is a flaming retard.

Miriam: If you give up now, I MAY spare you.

Me: You have one base with a defense of one scout left. I have planes.

    Miriam: Please forgive me!

    Me: ok.

Miriam: I'll never surrender to the likes of you!

Me: Ok. Can I destroy you now?

Miriam: Wait! I offer my entire research(nothing) my excess bases(none) and all my energy credits (1).

    Me: ok.

Miriam: I'll see you in hades. Prepare for annihilation.

    Silly Miriam.

The University? Pfft. Pacifists all the way!
Their science ratings are at least as high and Lals advantages in the council are quite handy in case of wars.

bah, lousy Peacekeepers, they stabbed me in the back, and all I did was use a planet buster missle on Miram....

"Why don't you go invoke UN sanctions...HAHAHA"

The technology is very interesting if you read about it when you research it. Its stuff that is not too far out there to be unreal.

Ahh, one of the best turn-based strategy games ever.

I have fond memories of destroying entire races with planet busters, (racking up sanctions of course) betraying my allies, and most of all, mass singularity units. Ahh, those were the days...

I only play transcend but always lose somewhere near the end. The only time I won on transcend was with the Gaians. I pwned the nearby Spartans with mindworms and airpower, but the hive had the big continent (was huge world map) and monsoon jungle and I was fighting them. When they weher clsoing in I put all my energy and supply cralwers into Ascent to Transcendence and won!

    I've played all 3 civ's, and I'd say 2 was the most ground-breaking...

it really **** me off that they took out fundamentalism in 3. I mean, why? It's more valid now than ever...
  • BlindFireBlindFire Join Date: 2003-03-28 Member: 14986Members
I have played civ2, but not one or three. Civ2 was cool, I remember those times times I cheated and nukes the british, before they even invented the bow...
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
I always was so advanced that I was using my a-bombs on ironclads and such, even without cheating :> of course, I always only played on the second difficulty level...

Mostly since fundamentalism can't be brought to a politically coherent point: The Islamic state we imagine as prototypic fundamentalistic isn't more so than a medieval kingdom or Athens democracy.

    I prefer the University faction.
Technology is the way to go. That sort of coincides with my own beliefs in fact. I suppose if that were a reality, I would be in that faction.

What about you guys? You guys sort of "lean" towards any faction?

I usually pick the gaians. the extra drone per 4 university citizens bugs me. 2 extra drones for a level 8 base? that's pretty annoying...

gaians get a better bonus-to-handicap ratio than all the others (2 efficiency + 1 planet - 1 morale - 1 police, while university gets -2 probe and +2 research...)

also, while the gaians are crappy at combat at first (-1 morale), they capture mind worms pretty dang often because of their +1 planet, and mindworms at the start of the game are a HUGE advantage... the game I'm playing now on the 3rd difficulty level, I killed off 2 factions with 1 mind worm as my main attacker, and a few scouts for backup...

after thinking about it more, though, maybe the university is worth it... because I complain about having extra drones, but the fact that the gaians have -1 police means they in effect have more drones too anyway... and lots of free university network nodes is another huge advantage :>

3rd diffculty? Psshh. Has anyone else beat it on transcend with regular rules and no cheating? I only ever won with the Gaians but I got pretty far with the peacekeepers. Frikken Hive killed me before I had enough votes for supreme world leader.

I never understood how it's remotely possible to beat SM games on anything higher than the mid difficulties :> the computer gets such ridiculous bonuses... what's the frickin' trick?
  • ObliteraterObliterater Join Date: 2002-11-22 Member: 9652Members
The trick is to eat the lesser small factions and work your way up, at least that is what I found with CivIII

Anyway I love alpha Centauri. It has so many neat features most other games dont, including design workshop, factions with distinct bonuses instead of clones with one unique unit, and of couse nukes that BLOW STUFF UP; instead of dropping a citys populations they BURN IT INTO A LAKE!!! I love thoes planet busters. And the mind worms. Thoes were fun.

I restarted a game and played as university (I cant think of playing another faction for some reason). And got into war with the gians again! This time I wanted a clean war, ie no planet busters that starts a world war. I do admit that I have used some "cheap" tactics (Nerve gas and genetic virus, got to pay for it to, damn UN). I FINALLY GOT THAT ##### OF MY CONTINENT! When I noticed that she was builoding planet busters I got afraid and turned all my productions into offense. Rather quickly I managed to capture her three largers citys using mind controll probes (WHen you have energy to spare...). Now Im proceeding to wiping her of the surface of planet using my divine deathbringers (Singularity engine/laser, antimatter plate grav ship with blink dispacers).

It finally looks like that 200 year war is nearing an end. Any games you want to share?

I'm almost certain that Civ 3: Conquests has fascism, which is quite similar to the old fundamentalist government type (i.e. Massive military support, low corruption). Not sure if it will eliminate unhappiness.

Still, I've always found communism to be a good government for warmongering, in Civ 3 at least.

    Must...get...job...to....play....Conquests...

EDIT: What I really love in Civ 3 is the resource system. Civ 2 didn't have that and after playing with it in Civ 3 I just can't go back. The resource system is just great, it fosters both conflict and co-operation and adds a much-needed dimension to the game.

I really don't apprecitate the mandatory coal for railroads in Civ 3...one game, Germany and only Germany had ALL the coal...iron-clads and railroads abound for them...

The computer in Civ 2 and Civ 3 really annoy me, they so blatantly cheat, it just makes me quit sometimes.

I had a demo of Alpha Centauri once...All I remember is pinkish-red land tiles, and weird aliens and some land rover thingies...was only like 100 turns or something though. Perhaps I should try to find a copy, but that's incredibly difficult with old games. Heck, early 2003 stuff is hard to find around here now.

But you see, that does make sense. Not everyone has coal. Sometimes I'll admit the resources can be a little unfair, but often you can find uninhabited islands with valuable resources on them. Start up a colony and start shipping it home. Or, negociate a trade deal with the people who have the coal. Diplomacy remains a very important part of the Civ 3 process. Or you could always go to war <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

One thing I don't like is that the computer knows, from the very start of the game, where all the resources will spawn. So you'll notice the computer builds hopeless settlements in the middle of a desert, or jungle, and sure enough when the relevant technologies are discovered what a surprise oil and coal galore!
