Find the hidden data
So, i'm kind of anal about how much space is on my hard drive, trying to always leave about 1/2 free.

I have a Hard Drive of 37.2 GB. I'll post the screenie of the pie chart of space used, space free and then how much space is used when every folder on the hard drive is selected.

Help me find the hidden stuff, and yes, I do have everything highlighted, even hidden files.

    Convert to NTFS. Better performance and disk usage.

    I use Folder Size to locate all the crud I wanna delete...

    but, me -- I try to keep about... 50 megabytes of my 20 gig HD free =P

    okay, maybe 200 or 300 megs -- enough for a cache... but space is definitely a prob for me...

    if foldersize doesn't find your space -- maybe defrag? or, I dunno... *passes to the next poster*

    turn off the windows restore function thingy.... that usually pinches a gig or two and as far as I'm concerned it's damn useless anyways

    If all else fails, try a RAID type 0

    Also run cleanmgr (start > run > cleanmgr) to delete all temporary files.

    just pull up properties on each folder on your HDD

    Start with root dirs and when ever you find a largish one work down till you can figgure out just why it is big

    THEN KILL IT!!!!!

    You can also delete your page file at each shutdown

    Do keep in mind that this is my entire hard drive data.

    I've gone through each folder and figured out why.

    I have Windows Backup thingy off.

    I defragged a day ago, I ran clean mgr before I defragged. Can't think of what else would be taking up 6 GIGS.

    seriously, download the file I linked to. It gives you the root structure of your hard drive, telling you how much stuff is in each subtree. like, it'll say C:\windows 4 gigs C:\program files 12 gigs etc, then you can click on those and see how much stuff is in each of those directories' sub directories...

    I used the program and I tracked down like 6 gigs of stuff to my anti-virus folder (I think it was norton)... I imagine it was something that was cleaned or quarantined at some point... I've since switched to AVG so I deleted that muh.

    Definitely check your browser cache. If you're using IE, it allocates a PERCENTAGE of your storage space, rather than a set number of megs to the cache. On a moderately-sized drive, this can easily default to six gigs. Heck, noticing it and cleaning it out got me three back. And I'd only been using IE for a few browser-specific websites that absolutely required it for verification purposes.

    (edit) Almost forgot. NTFS sucks, IMO. (/edit)

    Well for me space taken up mysteriously is usually .zip files that like to hide themselves, spy/adware, .exe's for games, mods and etc i dunno try checking for that stuff.

    I have my internet files set to about 1%. 1% of 40 gigs is 400 megs, not 6 gigs.

    I'm gonna try Zombie's thingy. I'll report back when i'm done.

    NTFS is horrible, youll hate it when you have a drive crash and have to try to get access to your data. by locking other users out of your folders it also locks out data recovery software from seeing your freakin documents folder.

    pagefile = 1.5 GB hidden
    temp = 2 GB hidden
    system restore = 4 GB hidden.

    kill the latter two and change pagefile to 1gb.
