Very funny. Got a bit stupid towards the end, but well made.
Apparently (and by that I mean "I read some article on everything2 about it") the movements in tai chi, if sped up, are actually very effective as fighting moves.
Probably why they (the chinese) created Tai Chi swords:

There was supposed to be an antique one on, but as far as I see, nothing special right now... just plain vanilla:

And yes, before you say it, I'm aware that "katana" is Japanese for "sword", so by definition that is also a "katana". I'm refering to the longer of the two swords carried by samurai
katana refers to just any ol' sword.
It's all in the Pronoun thingy!
Samurai swords, by name, IIRC:
Nodachi
Katana
Wakizashi
Tanto
tanto is actually a dagger... and of course there's my favorite, the aikuchi ^^
unless you are maybe Korean or something you may not have gotten the joke.
In the video the South Korean guys name is Kim Chee
Really spelled Kimchi
This is a very hot and spicy vegetable dish that is served with every Korean meal.
May I, by the way, pimp a really good game for the PS2, Sword of the Samurai? Certainly not everyone's taste (a good many people will throw a tantrum at the slow progression, but hey, sword mastery does not come overnight), but the most accurate swordduelling game I have seen to date. Every move has the potential to kill the opponent in one blow, but then again, every move can potentially be countered by the opponent in an equally deadly fashion (fortunately most of your training and duels are carried out with wooden swords, so a "deadly blow" will only lose you the match, not the game). Getting better is a combination of actual skill and stats, both matching each other well. And where other games make you tense and get your adrenaline flowing, this game relaxes you. Neat.
you learn new moves by watching others make them, and you can customize each stance with a attack combo, multiple block methods(against different types of hits, from different directions) and also a 'draw' method IIRC.

If only you'd live a little closer to me, I'd challenge you to a duel. Odense iirc?
One of my friends is teaching me and his friend Matt and Kitty, IIRC, Katana style fighting (me), Quarterstaff fighting (Matt) and Katana style fighting (Kitty). It's really cool, because he and Matt have been doing it for a while and they once had a spar. Matt won, with a Quarterstaff against a boken and a wooden broadsword.
What's a katana? A single edged, curved sword.
What's a cavalry sabre? A single edged, curved sword.
What's the difference? Oh, that's right. One's from JAPAN so therefore it's intrinsically 'cooler'.
Where's that website that makes fun of these people? My favorite was: 'Getting 'love' or 'peace' tattooed on you in japanese. C'mon, why don't you get it tattooed in english? Because having 'love' or 'peace' tattooed on you in English would look stupid. So how is it any LESS STUPID that it's written in Japanese?'
Anyway, Horsens lies one trainstop south of Skanderborg. Not that far away actually. I lived in Silkeborg for the first nine months too, so I know the region a little. I'm probably going to Silkeborg the last weekend of November, but I don't think I've got the time to give you the pwning you deserve at that time.
uranium: What's WRONG with liking Japan? Innocent until proven guilty iirc, so enlighten me.
As for the katana: True, it's actually not very different from a saber. However, your average saber just doesn't compare to the quality of a fine katana. The sharpness of the blade, particularly the last ten inches near the tip, is unbelievable. The finer sabers usually just featured decorated hilts, not significantly greater sharpness. Also, the katana is associated with the unique fencing styles of medieval Japan.
As for tattoos in Japanese symbols, the complexity of the symbols is what counts. The word "love" looks boring, mostly because we've seen it billions of times and the symbols are not that complex. Not so with the japanese symbols (I guess you'd use kanji for that (which are, iirc, actually chinese in origin)?).
Most fans of the japanese culture are also bored with the attitudes of the western world, and seek a little diversity. Diversity is good, it's been proven again and again. And just as the eastern world can learn a lot from us, so can we learn a lot from them, for the mutual benefit. Close-mindedness will get us nowhere.
Because it's different, and therefore more interesting. And besides, some people just like the look of the Japanese script. I do, for example.
Read a forum and half the topics are 'OMG I R B TEH LIEK PERFECT BLOO!!!'. Read a GAME forum and half the topics are 'OMG THIS SHOULD BE LIEK NEON GENESIS IT R REET AND GUNDAM!!!!!!!'. 80% of people have the same damn cliche, stupid looking anime avatars and sigs.
Play a game, half the people have the name 'Vash the Stampede'.
Go to school, see the inside of one of my friend's lockers packed with **** japanese snacks. (And they TASTE LIKE CRAP). Next to the snacks are those stupid bottles with the marble cap, that taste atrocious as well.(It's like a sickening combination of rancid sprite and bad vodka, just without the alcohol :/)
It gets REAL tiring. See, I'd have no problem with someone saying "Gee I like Vampire Hunter D". But it's not just that. If you find ONE person who has any interest in any anime whatsoever, chances are they're completely OBSESSED with everything else. One of my friends says to me: FLCL, it's pretty cool! Well I got a chance to watch it.
That was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. It made no sense, it wasn't funny, it was like watching Adam Sandler's movies cut into segments and hashed together randomly. And people like it: NOT because of plot. NOT because of action. NOT because of comedy... but for one reason: It's anime.
Keep your private obsessions to yourself. Leave. Go to Japan then, and enjoy living in squalor because you can't afford anything over there. Just please for the love of god I"M SO SICK OF HAVING THIS CRAP TAKE OVER EVERY ASPECT OF MY LIFE, AND I CAN'T DO A DAMN THING ABOUT IT!!!

Thats' easy. A calvary sabre has a incredibly fruity hilt, is used by uptight guys with funny mustaches in laughably overstylish uniforms who haven't had a single good movie made with them in it. Japanese stuff is "exotic" and "cool," western stuff just isn't. Personal preference on the part of westerners.
Me, I'm Chinese, I don't have to watch that Kill Bill **** to get my asiatic exploitation kicks... I saw it all when I was three. Hoo-ray.
esp the arm breaking...
Ahhh....
That's why there was that chinese wocket soljuh thing

But yeah, getting back on topic, that video rules. It gets my seal of approval. I'm going to go watch FLCL now *grumbles at Uranium*

FLCL was a brilliant documentation of the sexuality of male puberty. It's difficult to follow because it's strictly surrealist... Upon closer analysis, you'll find that it was a brilliantly executed and heavily layered work. It probably ranks down as one of best animated features ever made. You need to read the essay that compares the series to the film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, another surrealist work that's a live action film (written by Dr. Seuss, no less).
HOWEVER, you probably are right. Anime freaks probably DO watch it merely because it's anime. But what do THEY have to do with YOU?
Why should you care about what other people think about things? It's all about personal preference. If you get jacked up over other people's personal preferences then, honey, that's your own thing to deal with. If you don't like it, then that's your bone to pick... leave the others to their own thing.
However, to see our perspective of all of this... anime fandom, please view this movie: http://www.roninweb.net/mpelp/misc/deathray/what.mpg
a calvary sabre is something that was mass produced, used essentially by the elite and never really saw combat.
Katana's, Wakizashi's, Nodachi's and Naginata's were Japanese weapons that were used by the actual warriors, not just the elite.
and don't make the assumption about anime watchers. When you assume, you make an arse out of yourself and no one else.
I like Japanese culture because it's something that actually has a long history behind it, a complicated history. American history is so...bourgeois. so boring. so short. Not to mention that we basically steal from every culture that has something to contribute. Japanese history & culture is all-absorbing but they (from what i've seen/read) manage to make everything Japanese. They don't have the cultural taint America does.
