<div class="IPBDescription">Processor out of control</div> This just started yesterday afternoon. All of a sudden now my processor is ALWAYS at 99%, even if I'm staring at a blank desktop. I've ran virus check, adaware, both didnt really catch anything. Anyone know wth is going on?

Start taskman, goto the processes tab, find out which process is munching.

Dunno - is Steam known for sometimes hogging the processor even after it's finished ? I don't know 'cos I haevn't installed it yet.

I had a weird case of that myself the other day. Couldn't figure it out myself. Did a restart though, and it seems to be fine now. Nearest I can figure, yeah, might've been an improper closing of steam that just kept eating. Weird.

I never ran steam. The 99% is under idle processes.

Sytem Idle Processes = Ammount of CPU <b>not</b> being used.

    EDIT: Heres a good explination...
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> The system idle process is what is refered to as a sentinal process. It basically gives the CPU something to do when it does not have any other processes scheduled (this allows nicer code in the scheduler, since it does not have to have special cases when there are no runable/ready processes). Also, this process can be useful from an OS cleanup point of view (looks for deadlocks, etc.)

It runs at the lowest priority, and so will get cycles when nothing else is requesting CPU attention. So if you are not doing anything, then it is perfectly normal for it to have high CPU usage.

Is your system very laggy or is that what you were seeing in task manager?

That makes sense. But still, theres times when the thing locks up, even with a blank desktop (As for taskbar stuff I'm running three programs- firewall, antivirus, and one other program i got no idea what it does but its for the CD). The hard drive isn't reading, I can tell that by the sound, and I would assume it wouldn't be ram either, though it is possible some of it is loose or something, I'll check on that.

Are you sure you installed your sink onto your processer correctly?

This is on the dell I've been using for about the past four years. Not my new computer.

How fast is your processor and what kind is it?

You could have a virus....I've had a virus that made my cpu % go to 100% the whole time...

550 mhz PIII. I've ran virus check, and I have the latest update for the checker (norton). This is really **** me off. After locking up at the screen saver.... yes.. screen saver.. locked up... I reboot... it locks up, on chkdisk.... reboot, skip chkdisk.... it takes three minutes. Not to boot. No no. Three minutes from "enter user name" to the desktop. Booting took about six minutes. I got no frickin clue whats wrong.

This very well may be a possibility as we shut off our air conditioning, and are using the screen doors. Its been about 80 degrees out lately. I'm going to check for a temperature utility....

    had that problem too...

Norton Virusscan caused it, and then AOLIM caused it, and now after a reformat, i'm at a STEADY 15% usage....

either re-format, or get a new system, those are the two programs that would screw me up, and reformat/close are the two things that helped me.
