What's A Good Engrossing Rpg

<div class="IPBDescription">Besides morrowwind.</div> I'd really like to get into a good RPG game, but the only true rpg I've played in a long time is Diablo2 and since that is hack ridden...I need an alternative. Thanks.

Diablo 2 isn't an RPG by any stretch of the imagination. If you want a TRUE RPG, then Baldur's Gate is the way to go. Unfortunately, it's not really many people's 'thing'. After that was Neverwinter Nights which just wasn't as much fun as BG.

Morrowind I didn't like, because it had almost no reason for me to actually complete the game. I was just given a box and a letter and told 'give this to Caius' so I did and he tells me 'go run errands for me'. Whoopie. I just cheated and gave myself daedric armor and a daedric ninja-to and proceeded to slaughter the entire town.

The only recent RPG I can think of is Temple Of Elemental Evil, and the only reason I know about that is it was featured in yesterday's PvP. Worth a try, I suppose.

I'd like to suggest Gothic 2. It's a little on the action-side, but far from hack&slash, its quest tree is outstanding, the character development's very well put into the plot (although limited as you start out as a human male with given stats which then develop according to your wishes), and the graphics, well...

Scary as it is, the melee combat system sounds a lot like the system I loved so much for PSO o.O
But Gothic is only single player right? =/

Baldurs Gate 2, dear God that game is big. Its taken me near a month and I'm just now getting to the final chapters, its a like an entirely new game when you roll up a new class (or new alignment for that matter).

Oh yeah, and that Day of Darkness mod for BG2 that adds 30 new classes and like a dozen new monsters. Insane, simply insane. Hell, I haven't even bought the <b>expansion</b> yet!!

Too bad Bioware decided to cater to their cash cow franchise (NWN) and let BG wither away on an ancient 2D engine...

Planescape: Torment gets my Seal of Ownage approval.

Only game I've liked out of BioWare so far, the BG series didn't suit me at all.

I hated neverwinternights. I felt like I was playing a cheap lousy playstation 2 game then something worthy of Bioware. I think the LACK of good graphics is what made Baldur's Gate so good. It left a lot to the imagination.

You've got the expansions for <i>Morrowind</i>, right? Unless you don't like <i>Morrowind</i>, and only mentioned it out of deep hatred. (Let's face it, it's pretty much the opposite of <i>Diablo </i>and kin.)

I've heard mixed things about <i>Temple of Etc.</i> It's apparently buggy, and also adheres strictly to the AD&D rules from what I've heard.

<i>Knights of the Old Republic</i> is meant to be good. The Light Side is probably going to be really annoying, full of that pseudo-philoshopical crap, so I hope the Dark Side is well catered for.

dr.d - I prefered <i>Chrono Trigger</i>, myself. Fantoobulous game.

I never really liked Secret of Mana. I dunno, it just didn't appeal to me. The camera was annoying, for starters, and if you can't get on with the camera, you might as well call the whole thing off.

Star Ocean 2 just about owns anything. Live action combat, with magic and summons and items and...and two main stories, each one able to get different characters. Rena as starting is hard until you get Claude, Ashton and Dias. Then it's just a cakewalk.

as for RPGs, yes, NWN is quite excellent, imho. there is also an EXTENSIVE module making community out there, i think they have. what? like 2000 modules or something? so if you don't like the original SP, you're bound to find something that tickles your 2+ short sword (meant in a non-Freudian way, of course).

when i play with the Fogies, it's a ton of fun, some of the funny modules are worth the price of NWN, imhsnrho.

you can also join on persistent world servers, where the server stores yer char and such. think of it as kinda free EverCrack.

of course, you could just DL a SNES emulator, and go through the mana/FF rpgs if yer into that.
