isn't it nice!
Don't knock on FFXI until you've tried it. If you don't like FFXI, then DON'T TALK HERE! You ONLY have a right to form an opinion about FFXI AFTER you've played it for yourself. End of story.
That's why I asked twice what the combat is like but I've still got no answers
When you spot a creature, you can select it. From there, you have a few options. You can "Check" it to see if you have any chance of taking it on, you can Attack it, you can use Magic, an Item, or an Ability.
If you have a sword and you choose Attack, you pull out your swords, and you can go up to the enemy and attack it. It only becomes hostile towards you once you've attacked it. If you have a bow, you can stay back and shoot. Pretty basic stuff.
You can also use your Abilities. Your special ability can only be used once every two hours, however you learn other abilities as you fight. You can use those if you have enough TP for them.
You can use Magic. That's pretty standard. Same with Items, really.
You attack at intervals, depending on the Delay attribute on your weapon. Every time you hit, or are hit, you gain TP.
--- ALSO! FFXI has a story. It really does! A darn long one, too. It took my friend months and months to beat the main one, not counting the Expansion Pack (Which is included in the US version.)

even if that's true PSO DC was overrun by hackers long ago... trying to play it online now is probably like taking a walk down a dark alley full to the brim of rapists and muggers hoping you'll make it to the other side untouched ^^;
I hope not; the few times I ever bumped into me usually resulted in them logging off because of the amount of abuse I gave them I hate cheaters/dupers/hackers... -.-

I don't mind cheating in Single Player or online when it's not competetive. The best is when everyone has the same chests! Everyone loved me in PSO because I never picked anything up, I left it all for them because all I need was my Spells and Double Saber[FOnewm's can use Double Saber's, but I could]. I basicly baby-sat the lower levels and n00bs to get them familiar with the game.
FFXI, it seems that if you cheat everyone will rat you out because they're jealous. Stupid whiney babys.

(Don't say that it isn't fun in the first place, you haven't tried it yet.) Personally, I'd rather have fun with everyone playing fairly than having someone ruining the game for everyone else. Besides, it's not worth the effort to hack FFXI. It's got tons of protection going on.
Also, the combat seems boring, but it's kinda fun. Also, the game isn't solely about combat.
I helped new players too but that's just because I enjoyed doing it. I earned my stuff and level **** >< It's cheating and duping that ended up making everyone running about with lavis cannons despite the fact they were supposed to be so super rare you'd be lucky to see one in your lifetime ~sigh~
The only way I got stuff aside from finding it myself was in the form of gifts from people who I knew 100% didn't cheat... I got lots of gifts for some reason o.O
Um... also, anybody could use the double saber, it was twin brand and stag cutlery Forces (and females for the stag) couldn't use. If there's anything I know about it's stupid double sabers, my 'RP BF' wouldn't shut the heck up about them lol =3
Poking CF edit: ooh! what else is there to do? =D

Because it destroys the in-game 'economy' and renders the point of rare items, levels that take work to get and items that require quests to get completely pointless?
It doesn't matter if it's competitive or not, it still ruins the game. For some people there was competition in it... to be the first double saber owner or to be the first lvl 100 or whatever
D2 MF'ing was fun, because your items were actually worth something. Now, with a "bvalor" or a 4/20/20 being the standard rate for a high lvl weapon...I quit playing.
I didn't, but I'll be damned if I'd accept anyone who didn't earn those levels like normal players. If you were Duping/Cheating/Hacking you were missing half the point of the game. It was to advance your character and items with the company of friends. Like a mutual journey =3
Smoke half proved it as well; what's the point in cool items if everyone has them by cheating anyways? You might as well just go back to mIRC or something.
oh okies, for a minute there I thought it was something cheaty lol. I had some magic findy stuff too but never got into D2 enough to make good use of them ^^;
I signed up for Beta testing and have been playing for a while since i got my copy like a month ago. But I stay true to my promises, not to let any information out to the public. Pats, self on back for signing up along **** time ago. It, in no way disapointed me, But I am still sad how the Beta testers characters will be deleted when the servers restart.

You can also ride Chocobos or the Airships at certain levels...
To elaborate on questing:
You can get quests from people in town. They can be as simple as collecting food ingredients, or as complicated as finding rare items and battling it out in tons of dungeons. These usually net you some good Gil. There's a guy in San d'Oria who gives you 200 Gil every time you bring him 2 bat wings.
No offence but as fun as those things are they're all stuff you'd find in various forms in current RPGs anyways; mounts, vehicles, chatting, funny stuff, cool stuff because of the environment, 'craft' skills, etc
Not that exciting once the novelties wear off but I'll probably still give it a go if there's a free trial, if not it already sounds like the 8 or more MMORPGs I've tried over the years that started off feeling cool until the shiny outer surface wore away revealing the tired, giant-calculator treadmill nature underneath all of them =P
Yes, yes there is. I cannot remember how I found it or where but I can be sure when its closer to going gold I will make a thread about it. The company is funny, they have a two paragraph summary of "How pay 2 play is ruining the gaming industry with such failures as Everquest, and Ultima Online" They also state "Why charge people per month? The reason to do so is not for servers, its greed. At our core, we believe we can make even more money selling copies and developing a good fanbase. Honestly, would you rather buy a game and enjoy it for a one time fee, or a one time fee, then keep buying it until you quit?"
This interestes me a lot, and from What I saw on their website this will be big.

Is combat fluid, or is it *attack, wait 10-20 seconds, attack again*?

I'd still have to lvl up and get stuff worth trading first to get any decent items.
Using high % magic find items.
