Catalyst 3.8

WTH?
Allright, as most of you probably know, the new Catalyst drivers for ATI cards have been released. I downloaded them few hours ago, and here's what happened:

I automatically figured to remove the old catalysts (3.6) and such with only slight errors with InstallShield, but worked around it. Reboot, all fine, new hardware found, ignored the call. I had the (full)installation package on my desktop, I run it, files extracted, starting to install, oh joy. Then comes this:

Critical error! The driver software isn't compatible with any videocard(s) you currently have installed.

What the ****. I was shocked, paniced, didn't know what to do. I have 3 month old ati radeon 9200 series card, which according to release notes, help files, website, and the installation eula (or something similar) is supported. Also, one guy on a IRC channel has the same card and had a successful installation. Now, here's what I did, I (thank god) had a restore point, went back to 3.6, didn't know really what to do. Then I realised I should install DirectX9 according to few guys. It is now installed, and guess what I have? The same error as before.

Im getting pretty desparate at the moment, i still haven't been able to install any new drivers! It appears that the card went kaputt for no obvious reasons... I am in need of some SERIOUS help people, please try all your effort to gimme any hints.

Here's info about the situation: I have uninstalled everything visible from ati including control panel. I have disabled antivirus and firewall and all other programs. I have tried some customized "omegadrivers" from a 3rd party site. I have installed DX9 now. I have Windows XP Pro. I have tried rebooting many times. I am getting crazy.

Please help

I'm pretty sure you messed up by uninstalling your drivers. If it didn't have drivers for a Radeon card installed at the time you tried to upgrade, your system wouldn't think you had a Radeon card, and probably wouldn't want to upgrade your mystery card with ATI's drivers.

Reinstall your drivers from the disc that came with the card, then just install 3.8 over the old ones.

I tried that... but I WILL try it again. Be back in a moment!

NO! Listen not to the one used to nVidia...

To upgrade Radeon drivers, you DO need to uninstall the old ones first, and let it reboot. Otherwise you can end up with *severe* problems and conflicts.

Additionally, is your 9200 a Built By ATI, or a third-party Powered By ATI card? Some third-parties don't ID correctly sometimes, and so the Catalysts won't see that you have a Radeon installed. Why I always go with Built By ATI.

(edit) And by NO MEANS install the version that came with the card, if newer ones are available for download! Er.. unless they were the ones you were using before. Then any 'leftovers' (if any) will be on your HDD already, so it won't matter. (/edit)

I didn't quite get your point Talesin, but I know to say that the card is built by Connect3D. So, what are you suggesting me to do?

Oh, and I for some VERY odd reason am getting an error while trying to install drivers from the CD that came with package (which includes ati catalyst 3.4 drivers)

Ok, now I can pretty much say I have tried everything except Format C:

Im clueless... apparently the "works for all radeon series cards" is bull****. Someone with 9200 got it working but not me. Why? Why am I getting incompatibility issue with a god damn freaking video card drivers?

Unlike Talesin, I would uninstall the card, and reinstall the card with the drivers you got when you purchased the card. Then I would upgrade to the newer edition.

Done that at least three times now MedHead... Doesn't help. I have the original drivers that came with the card on a CD installed, tried to install new drivers but it says it cannot find videocard(s) that were supported by ATI... even though I have one installed with ATI drivers all the time... I feel like shooting myself in the toe.

EVEN PREVIOUS DRIVERS DONT WORK!?!?!?!? It seems that the card suddenly stopped being Connect3D/ATI card and became solid air! The computer finds it, knows it's a Radeon 9200, the CD can install drivers to it, but any newer than the ones on CD (ancient) can't even find a videocard on my computer? Im gonna kill myself if I dont get any help asap

Try the www.computing.net forums, they solve most of my computer problems.

I'd suggest contacting Connect3D tech support. Which is why I don't go for the large-cut bargain cards, as ATI tech support responds within a few hours, rather than days. Unfortunately, they don't support 'Powered By ATI' cards, IIRC. Might try anyway though.

    *bump*

I left a query to connect3d tech support, I hopefully get a respond asap tomorrow (thus these ppl rarely work on weekends) but anyways im still screwed... I just did a cleanup in my computer, found like TOO much 1cm thick dustpiles! One might say that's what may cause the problem, so I may just as well take off this old card and put the newer back on again....
