This kind of crap is shoved down the consumers throat anyway.... Guess you reap what you sow...
But yeah, while we ban this game... let's ban every other stereotype while we're at it... Bring on Redneckopoly!
Ooooo, phase to discussions please I'm an idiot.
In the mean time discuss it here : )
hypocrisy off the port bow.

I'm certain that if "RedNeckopoly" was the first of the 'stereotype-monopoly' series to appear it would not have drawn nearly so much attention as the "ghetto" version.
It does seem that if anybody other than a black man talks about the ghetto it is automatically racist.
'Rednecks' on the other hand seems to be fair hunting ground for comedians of all descriptions.
It is an annoying double-standard that is not only not justified, but also continues to encourage racial divides.
Not true, NASCAR Monopoly proved to be very popular.
Ba-ZING! :-p
Yes, its true. Redneckopoly would have been a good laugh, but 'Ghettopoly' is racist. The double standard is astounding.
Essentially, if you point out the failure of inner city black culture, you're a racist.
What would you call a culture "good" that (in general) disrespects hard work, education, encourages drug use, crime, and domestic abuse? (The latter 3 in music, at least).
I'd call that a pretty crappy culture. I'd be called a racist.
I know it's easier to get a gag on the wealthier class because it's not as if it's offensive because we all know that it's not really derogative, now whether it is "playful" to do "Ghettopoly" is debateable, it's offensive to say the least, and it's in poor taste, lets face it, there's nothing funny about the poor, nor is it funny to be poor, so let's not poke fun ok ?
I'd also like to say, that it wouldn't be too bad if they did their "Thugopoly" because thats not trying isolate an innocent struggling group of people and laugh at them, but about people who might have idealogical differences and/or a non-class based culture (I don't mean racism, but I mean like the Pop culture, or the Rap culture).
This is something I see on a day to day basis and I call it 'reverse racism'. You see in New Zealand we have politians who have said some really daft things, and some news presenters that said equally daft things.
One of our politicians once compared the Europeans to the German people who allowed the holocaust of Jews to go on. This was because when the British came to NZ a lot of Maori (the indiginous people) died due to things like disease and a few wars that sprang up (but the British here did nothing as bad as what the Austrlian colonial government did to the Aboriginies). She of course got away with these comments and her job etc etc. In fact many hailed her for her 'bold' and daring comments. When someone bought up the fact the Maori had slaughtered the entire Mori Ori population (the people who were here before the Maori) they were accused of being a neo nazi and lambasted in general.
This isn't to say a certain politician didn't draw fire, but it shows the complete and utter double standard I'm exposed to rather nicely.
I can point to university scholarships. If I'm born with a different name and can tie to any Tangataphenua, then I have an easy time getting scholarships even if you're not an A student. If you ARE me right now, with a rather English name then you have to work your **** off, get A+ marks and then STILL not have a good chance of recieving a scholarship. I also receive less student support money from the government among other things.
Isn't equality great though?

Im outraged that this white game called MONOPOLY exists. You buy property and exploit the poor workers!(/sarcasm)
I can see where they're comming from, because stereotypes dehumanize people...
However to an extent the black culture brought this it itself.
Reverse racism is a really tricky, the biggest and most prominent problem is the fact that both sides are right, yet all the damn policy gridlock and partisan prevents things from being done, which ultimately leaves the US' judical branch to pick up the slack. Not to mention the lack of compromise. I'd love to see each sides be a little more pragmatic but we all know that partisan is driving a larger wedge between factions everyday ! (Thanks Liberal-Media). The world has almost spiraled into Hyperpluralism. I swear, partisan will destroy democracy.
Commy, you do know that there are actual ghettos and in many places in California, violent barrios. These aren't culturally created things, they do exist, and are on par with laughing at the homeless. Honestly. So when you say they brought it on themselves... Not to mention, that from their early roots in American history they were obviously put in a terrible place in the socio-economic hierarchy, we all know ! Anyways, they are working themselves out of alot of the problems ( Too bad many are brain-washed by the left, it would be nice to actually see themselves see how detrimental name calling is and that conservatives aren't out to get them). Annnnnyyywaaaaaaays. Not really entirely their fault. ( I almost sound liberal,*scratches away at my skin, aaaarrgghh*)

When I said they brought it on themselves, I should've said, "They brought it on themselves, by flaunting known stereotypes because they were "cool" at the time (Rap artists killing cops, etc that sorta thing)

The thing is though, everyone of us has that fine line of sensitivity that says "don't go there" when it comes to humour. It differs from person to person. You might think blonde jokes are fine until you meet a blonde that is sick of the stereotype.
Honestly, if every time someone in attempting to create a joke considered the entire populations feelings on the matter, there probably wouldn't be any jokes in circulation at all. It's almost always going to offend someone, somewhere, sometime.
What bugs me about the "Ghettopoly" issue is the fact that it is not about poor people, but poor people of a certain race. "TrailerParkopoly" would not be nearly as big of an issue. This is a blatant double-standard that I am quite frankly tired of. It gets old.
I think everyone is just up in arms because it deals with black people... it's like the warning indictators instantly pop-up "This guys black, better no insult him lest I be called a racist"
Bloody kneejerk reaction I think....
don't trouble yourself with the idiosyncracies of the deluded and socially paranoid >_>
And so far, it's not like they're treating this like "making fun" of all the wanna-be thugs, they are seriously making fun of the problems in the ghetto. This is one of their things "You get your neighborhood addicted to crack cocaine, collect 50$".
Well isn't that funny ! Erm. That's right, it's really not that funny, mainly because it actually happens.
Now I agree, that it would fine if it was just making fun of stereotypes, but it doesn't seem like that...

Well, from a sociological standpoint, the "Ghetto" is a sub-culture. Look at it closey, differing norms, folkways, and mores...

yeah, my friend's grandpa grew up in the GHETTO... before he was sent to a auschwitz?
Buying stolen properties, pimpin hoes, building crack houses and projects, paying protection fees and getting car jacked are some of the elements of the game. Not dope enough?...If you don't have the money that you own to the loan shark you might just land yourself in da Emergency Room.

This is da cool, I mean how can da playas not respect yo ? When I associate things with the damn hizzy sub-culture I associate with crack houses and getting shot gangsta. Not with just stereotypes ya hear dawg' ?
My point is that it's a hard balance to get, and the creator obviously went overboard, you could do this subject within reason, but for some people this hits home real hard. Maybe it's just me but it's not funny. Honestly, can we agree that it went a bit overboard to an offensive level ?

No,
I don't think it's really possible to achieve something that some people would not find offensive. All the stuff mentioned is essentially reality and so should be viewed as 'bleak humour'.
It doesn't offend me in the slightest. However, I can see how it might upset others.
Still, nobody forces you to buy/play/read about it after all.
It isn't reverse racism, its just plain racism. Calling it "reverse racism" takes its serverity away by perscribing it a different name. Sorry I take this very serious, but I have been a victim of racism(being part asian , part white) and its not kool, especially when you are a kid. I also had to hear stories about my little brother putting up with comments made by his roomates friends during soul food night.
As for ghetto monopoly, its a stupid idea. Is it racist, i say not really. Its a stupid attempt to make money of the rap culture, just like Pimp Juice(some rap artist is releasing this). Should it be censored, no. SHould we buy it, no. Let the creators waste their money on a stupid endevor.
Now this game is quite funny, for some it might not be, but so what?
That calls for no violence or robbery, and that's inherently offensive.

Man, my thoughts exactly.
If anything, people using this word are more racist than anything in that Ghettopoly game. You DIDN'T grow up in the ghetto and your life wasn't NEARLY as hard as the Jewish (and a few non-Jewish) people who did grow up in the real "ghetto". The abuse of this word and the changing of it into a word used to make yourself look cool is sick and I think to some extent, racist in its own way, which would make many black people racist. Uh-oh here come the black rights groups coming in to tell me I'm a dirty neo-nazi racist, better run...
*Note*- I have no problem with black rights groups. I do think that at a time, what they were fighting for was noble and right, but now they carry things way to far and are such hippocrites it's not even funny. They now expect minorities to have more rights than the "majority", which would include white people. (acctually Mexicans are now the majority in California and people are still fight for their "rights") This is of course, wrong and should be stopped quickly.

I feel no offense at that. The words of another person are either informative (if indeed i was ugly and stupid) or simply empty (if the statement is injustified and is simply designed as an insult). I see no reason to be offended by an empty statement and neither would I be offended at a true statement that stated one of my deficiencies.
