For instance, if I was to say that I would do something tomorrow, then I could put off doing it forever, seeing as tomorrow never technically comes. "Tomorrow" is just a concept which most people attach to the next day in a sequence. There is no day that I can point to and say, "This will be tomorrow", because then on the next day I find out that the concept of tomorrow has in fact changed overnight, and what was once today has become yesterday, and what was once the day after tomorrow has now become tomorrow, and the statement I made yesterday (which was today at the time) must now be extended, as tomorrow has moved on to the next day in the sequence. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> Precisely the argument I use for such annoyances as 'when will your thesis be done', and 'that's what you said yesterday'. It works surprisingly well until they ask me for a set date, month and year. Most manage to forget year until the next day, after they've already agreed that my deadline is within what they rank as acceptability, and that I respond it'll be <date> next year. Which occasionally works, if they do not remember the exercise in futility that is 'tomorrow'.
In essence, it must be spoken clearly, concisely, with hard dates and set conditions before any degree of finalization can occur. 'Tomorrow' may be well and good for casual conversation, but when you're dealing with large projects, the additional wiggle room is neccessary. And HL2 is the biggest project of its type to be set before the consumer for a very long time. The astute will note that this particular wording can be interpreted as needed to cut out Doom3, Pong, or any other references or arguments cited as simply being 'not of its type'.
Welcome to PR, folks. Valve seems to be running a fine line between wiggle-room interpretations, and fanbase disappointment.

Personally, I'm betting the release of HL2 is being pushed back because of the problems with steam. Now, if Valve had released Steam and CS 1.6 and not had any problems, and joy spread across the world, HL2 probably would have had a better chance of coming out on time. But instead, steam was delayed a couple of months, and released in what could be called (among other things) an unspectacular fashion.
Anyway, I'm an old Nintendo fanboy, so delays won't peel the skin off my back. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> And don't go beating on PHL for it. I bet it's out for the holiday season.

Yea, I keep forgetting that I have a Gamecube sitting over there in the corner. I only got about halfway thru Ocarina of Time, and only played Wind Waker for about half an hour (I had just gotten the internet back from about an 8 month grounding, so I was hooked). And I've also gotta try out that new F-Zero game, and I can't skip Soul Caliber 2.
Oh, and Halo for PC should be coming out soon. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Here's GameSpot's own "Delay Editorial". Also depressing, but much more informational. There's always that last glimmer of hope for the Surprise of the Year.
Heh thanks to that Gamespot article I was able to get the Detonator 51.75 beta drivers, didnt even know they were out! It'd work perfectly f***ing well in HL1. If HL2 had a system that functioned 100% the way the old HL1 WON System did, everyone would be smiling from ear to ear.
