<div class="IPBDescription">just got bored...</div> ... so I decided to start a random sketch to fly away from my actual 3D modeling thing.
The fact is... toward the middle-end part of the sketching, I still was bored <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Better take a walk outside and have some... ice cream... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Felt like posting it on the forums too so maybe it wouldn't have been a total waste of time.
Plus I had to add something to the artwork forum before too long, so here it is.

Feel free to comment. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Very nice, although I would rather have it that you didn't draw the little strip in the middle. It makes the alien harder to recognize at first.

    Thanks for all the replies! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Now I know that I should not *throw it away* (ow... maybe I shouldn't have got ride of some over sketches then... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> well never mind) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    A special thanks to Cal' as his comment really made me feel all warm inside, since actually I would like to become a professional 2D-3D designer <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well, this being said, I tryed to follow some of the advices people in this thread gave me:

    - Microscopic Man: I tried to add some colors, as the following pic shows it, but now you -as well as everybody- can see that I'm not very good at colouring yet... I felt like adding color to this sketch though because I know that at a time or another, I'll have to build skins for my 3D models, so I better practice my coloring skills <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    - Pjofsky: Modified the strip in the middle and splitted it in two parts: the reason for the strip was to have some kind of background (the creature with nothing behind it would have felt a little bit too "crude"). Now the reason for the strip is to show the "glowing" light that somehow radiates from the blue translucent hull on the back of the creature.

    - Beast: Althought I did what I did, Go on if you feel like it! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I may add some new pics later on.

    Here again, feel free to comment <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thanks jeer I will get onto it as soon as I have the time. There won't be any significant changes in terms of basc shape, But the kharaa version will have no exposed bones/muscles and would have a headshield thingy. I will call it the onoskulk :O

    Xenomorphs/monsters are some of my favorite subjects for drawing, along with women and weaps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->O dear god, that is absolutely AWESOME.?

    Well I don't think that I'll have time to post a tuto right now -because people who know me well are aware of the fact that when I do thins kind of stuff it's usually *really* detailed and *really* long, take a look at my "Small Squad Tactical Positioning" rant in the Frontiersmen Strategy Forum to see what I mean- but I may give a few advices, since I felt I would have to after Sudzz's post:

    - in order to create something, I personally start by thinking about the structure of what I'm gonna draw. In the case of this alien, wich is living breathing being, I started with it's bones, since everything is articulated around it.

    - to have an easier time, you may take a model (a pic of a dog's bone structure for example). In any case, studying on various animals' bone structures will help you feel more confident in your drawings, once you know some of their basics. I usually don't need model references now, but that's because I've spent long times studying pics of horses, elephants, cats, dogs, frogs, dinosaurs, birds, bats etc.

    - Do not focus too much on the "real" looking aspect. It doesnt matter if your creature has 12 legs and mamals only have 4 (usually). Let your imagination free, you'll have time later to explain why it has some many legs and what's their purpose.
    For example, on my alien, I intended to have a huge shape for the torso/back in order to implement this translucent blue thingy, among other things. I had no precise idea what purpose it would serve (maybe some kind of new weapon to fight against the human threat?), but I sorta liked the idea so I did it.

    - at this stade, I usually do a few really fast sketches (very small ones) in order to place the bone structures (very simple, just a few lines) and find a general shape that pleases me. These may prove to be un-necessary if you already have a solid image in your mind of what you would like to obtain, but they still may help you.

    - once done with that, I start putting lines accordingly to the little sketches I've drawn. First I start with very light strokes, to have the lines appear, then I compose the drawing in order to enhance it. It may depend on your style, but a trick here could be to have heavy lines at the points where the shapes should be really put in relief.
    Little by little, I take out the lines that helped me start the drawing.
    Try to keep in mind that you are drawing something that is breathing, and should move in a 3D world. Avoid as much as possible a "flat" aspect (you do so by adding shades with various strenghts in the effect for example).
    Focus on certains aspects that you think are importants and give identity to your drawing, and take some breaks to see if you are doing accordingly to these aspects.
    In this drawing, I wanted to focus on the feeling of brutal strenght, and bestiality, along with a deadly and quick movement looking feel. That's why I gave it such a massive shape for the torso and focused on an impressive musculature (strenght), the mouth of the creature is wide open an a silent scream, showing teeth (bestiality), the lines are sharp, legs and teeth are razor-like, the eye is in a dark cavity, giving it a vicious look (deadly), the legs are in a shape of triangles, the belly/waist is tight (reminds of fast creatures like leopards, or greyhounds).
    Keep on doing until you are satisfied, don't hesitate to change things, or start a new drawing.

    - Ok, so here is one of my "little secrets": in order to improve the "feelings" that I would like my drawings to reflect, I try to listen to the music that I think may reflect the most an atmosphere that corresponds to the drawing.
    It helps me alot, and you would be surprised of how much music can help you imagine an atmosphere <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Okay, enough <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    As for the size, I imagined it in various sizes, but I think it's better being smaller than the Onos.
    This way it can move fast. And I love fast creatures <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Somehow around twice bigger than a skulk, so it may still be recognized as a powerful creature, even if not as powerful as the Onos might be.
    The size of a panther, or a tiger maybe in fact. The alien tiger <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    As Pfjosky said, it might tear appart an onos squad, but only if it's in a pack of two or three; like velociraptors were not as powerful as a T-Rex, but would still be able to take it down if in a pack of several individuals I think.

    Okay that's it for now I think <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Edit: After reading carioca's post (posted while I was writing this post) I would have wanted to know what do you think the glowing thingy might be? As I've said, I didn't find any particular purpose for it yet.

    Man, I've been too busy to visit these forums much lately, but when I check in there's a slew of amazing work posted.

    Really great drawing, JeeR. Lots of sweet details, and scary as hell.

    Your female marine sketch is quite nice, as well. You really have a lot of talent for this stuff, and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

    As I've said in the corresponding topic, I'll certainly add more works for the female marine thread as I already got some ideas running through my mind.
    I may also add more things for the alien concept art thread, but I've got nothing new yet, so it will have to wait <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Pjofsky, by antlion, do you mean the little insect thingy?

    Psycho! Get your scanner repaired soon! or use someone else's! Can't you find some store/cyber coffee/press where you can scan your stuff and bring it back to your home via diskett or something?
    Now that you said that, we are all waiting for you to show us your stuff now!

    Hurry! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
