Well heres the layout for my new map. I decided to make a layout before I started to design it, as I always end up with dead end maps otherwise.

    looks ok

    but all the rines have to do is set up a tf farm in that top, hl, and 1 hive is render useless

    The upper left hive should have an entrance from another hallway so it isn't a dead end.

    Kage is right. Its a dead end, making it far to easy to defend as aliens. Add something neat, like a hole blown in the wall and the tunnel leads underground, to anoth...wait this is a space station.

    ...add a hallway.

    Your right, something similar to a hole might suit. A good example I see is the pipeline in Hera. I'll get on that later.

    hives MUST have 2 onos-sized entrances that dont lead to the same room plus vents.
    otherwise its too much like subspace / Alpha continuum.

    perfect layout so far.

    Ok, that's a nice gameplay layout, but it doesn't look much like a functional space station. Looks like a fun map, but think, how much sense does it make? what does each room do?

    Try to model this map around the space station, not the space station around the maps.

    Originally I designed the map to be a space station. I also feel it is a space station, if you look there is rooms in what you might call unexpected places, the shape and sizes are also rather irregular. A few examples below:

    1) Middle Bottom - Observation area, which ultimately became a hive.
    2) The observation area started off as the marine start, and the marine start was originally a hive. Due to gameplay problems that would immerge I had to switch them over.

    Legionnaired: It could be a perfectly functional space station. I'm sure he has something in mind.

    Anyway, looks like a functional layout. A few issues, though... First, the hive on the right looks much too accessible for the marines; all the have to do is take a short trip through a room and a few halls and they'll be in the hive. Conversely, the bottom hive looks too far away from both the marines AND the other two hives; consider simplifying that area. Also, watch the siege of the top left hive area -- it looks as though a siege could be set up in the marine base that covers the nearby res node room, which is also where the aliens will be setting up their defences.

    My suggestions: Move the left hive farther down to move it out of siege range; move the bottom hive up and a little to the right to bring it closer to the other hives; and move the right hive up into the rightmost corner to bring it away from the marine base, and to get some more use out of the top part of the map, which currently looks like it will be underused.

    Right I never noticed that on the right hand side. That is one major design fault, although I feel i've justified it with the moving of the marine spawn, and the creation of a new corridor south of the new marine spawn. Although now I feel the observation hive is too far away from the marine spawn.

    Edit:: This is the layout better gameplay wise. Although I have another alteration similar being released tomorrow, which I find "better".

    the up left hive has 1 exit place see the anopthers 2 hives is right has 2 entraces and for oposing roms in the left up hive the 2 ways come to the same room.
    2nd trouble the hive is to much close the walls of the marine start bring the marines to siege easy by his own base.
    the sieges atack evry thing in 800 units.

    Looks good! But the left hive should be more on line with the right, so move it a little down.
    And where the MS was before you can add a dual res node.

    Latest version. Added weldable to stop marines accessing right hand hive, added a few more vents, move the left hand hive slightly up and left. Even named some areas too.

    Looks good, just one thing that's nagging me - the left hive. It has two entrances but both lead to the same room making it easy to defend and easy to lock aliens inside. Here's what I suggest you to consider:

    Hmmm, I'm not sure if Sensor Array Hive sounds right as a name...

    Try renaming that to, say, Electrogenics Engineering Lab or Biological Containment Hold.

    Make it look like they've found something and converted a cargo hold to study the "Specimens" that escaped somehow...

    Well its a space station. Space stations i assume will be either a storage station or some kind of active station, and a sensor arrary was perfect. It sort of set the whole map out for me. So I'm gonna keep it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Research ships are more likely to have specimens, or an off planet space station.

    Update To Layout :: Suggested left hand side layout made, with a new weldable, different access to the rest of the map. I feel I'm ready to map now and that the map is balanced. Comments?

    I used MSPaint (It has its uses!) To create the actual layout of corridors, and rooms. Basically the overall layout. I used Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.04 to create the text and the simple logo at the bottom right hand corner. Oh and I stole the NS Icon and tagged it up top left. BTW map has started creation, so look to about 1-2weeks for initial screenshots.
