    Not necessarily, depends which user interface is most comfortable for you I suppose. Most novice modellers would find Milkshape or Wings a helluva lot easier to pick up and use than Cinema or Maya I'd imagine. The cheaper/ simpler programs allow you to practice the basic principles without bogging you down in 100 obscure rendering sub-menus that you simply don't need to make a mesh. ( Don't confuse cost with power btw, I've seen some amazing models done in Blender for example which is completely free. )

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->and i don't want to make models that i can't keep forever because they are not portable.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Simply a question of file formats and backing up your work, most of the main formats have been used for years, and will continue to be. It's all just a lump of geometry after all.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->i think i know the basics of modelling enough even though i never tried to make a model <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Then I'm afraid you are in for an unpleasant surprise although if you know the theory / terminology that will help a fair bit.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->i'm making a renderer and a 3d modelling university just accepted me based on that.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Don't quite understand that, do you mean <i>you</i> are actually <i>programming</i> a render engine? If so, I'd suggest that programming is definitely the direction you should be heading in, not graphics.

    formats are not really simple like having just a bunch of triangles. some formats don't even explicitly state where triangles go. there's a lot of dynamic tesselation in some formats.

    yah i'm programming my own 3d engine but i'm fed up of no modellers letting me use their models to show off my engine. so i have to use my own models. it's probably for the best. i'll be able to make games all by myself and won't have to pay anyone or argue with co-workers and a lot of people do love to argue with me all the time for some reason.
