Usually I will only play marines if I know that there is at least one good comm on the team when the game starts. A poorly commed marine game or one with a lot of newbies who don't listen just isn't fun IMHO.
I have always like aliens... i was alien throughout 1.04, usually skulk/fade... but on those stressfilled days, i would gorge (the squishing sounds and peaceful expirience really helps ease the tension out of you).
Now i see marines are in need of help. I play FA and CS and DoD, and do very well in them (at least in the top 3 of my team everytime) however... Marines really has me puzzeled. I think it may be the model, or the sounds of the weapon, but i just cant aim as well as i can in other mods. One game i lagged so bad my model didnt register i was firing... that was awsome... i did my best on marine then because i didnt have my gun going crazy in my hands, no muzzle flash, no loud noise... just my gun in my hands and things dieing on the other end. now i dont know how to get that to work every time
But there is one thing the marine team has going for them... Frustraition.
Time and time again, we lose. Loss after loss, it really wears on the spirit of the team. Marines are beaten, smashed, and devoured... moral is low and few have fight left in them. A couple games i joined people were already talking about how they were going to lose... before the IPs were even built!
I have played far to many games where i haven't seen a hive... or even a hive room! i have played games where the marines never even tried to get a res node... i would sit and ask for one, but the com didnt want to "waste the res" because he knew we would never hold it to pay for itself. I know there are betas that help this problem... but my fav servers are clan servers that run 2.0 exclusively.
Then again... these hard times allows for some crazy and non-expectant things to happen, often i just goof off if i join marines and i see them instantly turtle up... iam sick of getting spored to death inside our spawn, i wish my team would move out with me but they always refuse. One game i was walking around with my knife out with the interspecies symbol of peace (blinking my flashlight really fast) when i came upon a gorge. Now instead of healspraying me to death... he stopped building and looked at me for a while... then kept doing his thing. i followed him around in his hives and around his res nodes. was quite a fun game being the gorges "pet"
well i suggest next game of marines you play... do something radical and unexpected to liven up the mood... after all, are we not here to have fun?
Just try to get me ya skulks !
I rarely join aliens because I find it too easy. I am almost ALWAYS on the top of the list in kills my team as skulk. On the other hand, I suck at rine. I'm rarely even in 2nd place as rine. However, there's something about aiming a big gun that just gets my adrenaline pumping.
If only more people felt this way .

Blah blah... people "stack"* on both sides, I have seen more people stack as a marine because it's the easiest to play for the most part, now you're complaining of alien hogging. Sounds balanced to me. I never played aliens, but recently I now go alien every game because I'm learning a lot about it, that's one of the most enjoyable features of NS, understanding how the game works, and this is how a player improves. I think players should go through a phase of playing nothing but one side until they get a lot better, the game is so much better that way. Aliens are mostly keen to work as a team in the servers I frequent, and that's why I'm playing in the first place.
I never played 1.0 properly cos I found the game sucked, now all of a sudden it's the best mod I've ever played.
*I find this term quite amusing since this is also the same term for piling on top of each other in other games
I don't go aliens to win (I'm an alien player, although I'll occasionally go rines due to alien stacking), but bacause marines are usually pretty boring to play. If you do want a good marine game, find bigger servers. On 11 vs. 11, the marines have advantages (high spawn speed with multiple ip's, concentrated firepower in large groups), while aliens have disadvantages (only one spawn spot, individual res is very slow). Sure, if aliens all attack together you still have a problem, but if marines stay close to each other they usually can outgun any resistance they encounter early in the game, even with LMG only. On such servers, 2.0 seems pretty even, and 2.01 will probably be a big series of marine wins.
Balancing teams isn't usually worth doing, as mass quitting tends to happen once the game is mostly decided anyway. Making the teams even at that point generally causes a slightly longer stalemate.
