Best Guitar Solos Ever

<div class="IPBDescription">A discussion based on...</div> Guitar solos. Some make or break songs. Some are under appreciated, some just flat out suck, but what solos really do get you going, or have a lasting effect on you.

Mine would have to be:

"Zombies Inc" by In Flames- Obviously a great solo if its the first one that pops into my mind. Starting with acoustic and moving into electric before moving back to acoustic, it just has a feel to it that uplifts me, and truely goes with the song, even if its tempo fits nothing with the rest.

"Fade to Black" by Metallica- It makes me think about times long gone. It has this sense of hopelessness that really works and fits the song.

"Nutshell" by Alice in Chains- With such a somber song, this upbeat solo brings an uplift to the song that just makes it completely perfect.

I'll add some more later, but what about the rest of you?

    This is definetely O-T, and a wrong tone away from the anti-spamrule. Careful, folks.

    me thinks Jimi Hendrix. I don't think I would need to point out any specifics as there's probably a guitar solo in almost all his songs.

    "Stariway to Heaven" by Led Zeppeling - BEST SONG EVER! The solo, the lyrics, the begining, everything!!

    "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd - The solo in the beggining is pretty easy to play, but it's cool.

    "Fear of the Dark" and "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden - It's Iron Maiden. Enough said.

    "American Woman" by The Guess Who - Not the one played by Lenny Kravitz (although it's also quite good). I just simply like it.

    Pink Floyd - Marooned

    Instrumental chill-out music, exellent. Reminds me of summer and tropical islands. Fantastic solo!

    Anything that's texhnically excellent but emotionally cold isn't a good solo. That rules out 99% of metal solos then. I judge a good solo by whether it fits the song well, so off the top of my head:

    The Auteurs - Married to a lazy lover
    Shudder to Think - She might be waking up
    The Cure - A letter to Elise (among others, Robert Smith is great at knowing what to play when)
    Smashing Pumpkins - Here is no why (Billy Corgan has a knack of knowing what to play too)

    As strange as this sounds, I love the guitar solo in <b><i>Like a Stone</i></b> by the esteemed <i>Audioslave</i>.

    I'm more into the modern-day stuff. For example, Dave Matthews and John Mayer have some very impressive work, and are definetly worth a mention.

    Also, here's one that is just pure acoustic guitar throughout and it sounds amazing : Eric Clapton - Classical Gas.

    That one solo in the movie Deliverance. "Trickbag" I believe it was called; I think it's by Steve Vai.

    All of those are wonderful just wonderful <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> i love guitar
    i cant begin to organize the best solos ever, cause they are all good
    but my fav. guitar player is Dave Mustaine from Megadeth (who brock up awhile ago <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )
    ive always like the music that he has done <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    plus their music seems to just fit together, so well.
    they can take anything and make it sound good.
    and when they had nick menza (SP?) as their drummer <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
    that was the best. cause he was an <b>awesome</b> drummer.

    all of the above are great solos
    I love all of them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I think all of you guys are forgetting the Eruption guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen. Almost 2 minutes of guitar solo greatness. It's amazing if you've ever seen it in a live performance.

    Also, almost anything by former GnR guitarist Slash is a winner in my opinion.

    Really suprised to see "Here is no why"

    The intro riff is what got me into that song when Melon Collie and Infinite Sadness came out so many years ago. Great song though.

    Unfortunely, your basis of Metal solos is way off, and really edges me towards a flame. Try telling me that In Flames doesn't have passionate solos that absolutely rule, is just flat out wrong. The same goes for Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Krisiun, Megadeth.

    Another solo, from a more well known song that I really like (perhaps because its my favorite band), "Man in the Box" has an amazing solo, Jerry just chops away at his guitar like never before, and while its defintely a different tone for the song, it works.

    Uhm, OK... I'll try. (But I'm not very good at this. I just like to hear <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )

    For me, the best solo is from Stariway to Heaven. This is a bit biased since I'm a Led Zeppeling fan.
    The begining of the song can be considered a kind of solo, and I like the way it starts in a very calm way, using an acoustic guitar sound. The music then progresses (but not solo anymore though) to heavier rock, and then, finally, at the end, the music become pure Rock 'n Roll!!!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The way Mr. Jimmy Page repeats the notes on the solo and how he varies the tunes is just faboulus, varing a lot makes the solo not too over repetetive. And he repeats the notes during stratgic times. And the speed of his fingers on the cords is just amazing!!

    Man, for me, Mr. Jimmy Page is the best guitarist in the world.
    LET'S SALUTE HIM!!! <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I think for pure technical skill I'd have to go with the guitarwork in Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment. John Petrucci's just so clean.

    For emotive power, check out Angel by Jeff Beck. It's some of the most soothing pretty guitarwork I've ever heard. On the way to prom my girlfriend and I stopped in a park and danced in the headlights to that song. Awesome moment. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    If you like acoustic solos, check out anything by nickel creek, and also the solo albums by Chis Thile and Sean Watkins. Sean Watkins is one of the most amazing acoustic players I've ever heard. For pure acoustic rockage, check out Neo's Song by Sean Watkins.

    Edit: Oh yeah, almost forgot, this is ignoring led zeppelin. Check out all their stuff first, then listen to what I reccomended. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Dude.... you like some GOOD music.

    My favorite solo by Hammerfall would probably have to be in "End of the Rainbow"

    It just keeps with the happy beat to the song, and makes me think of times long gone.

    btw, I would have to say that Kenny Wayne Shepard, and just about any Blues artist have some amazing solos <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yngwie Malmsteen is pretty bada** with "Arpeggios From Hell".

    More songs like that (the guitar being the melody of the song, or the whole song itself) are "Lifeforce" and "Morning Star" by Vinnie Moore and "XXX" by Konroth. Great songs! Great solos!

    but people still never give Dave Mustaine enough credit.
    but there are to many good guitar players out there.
    cept alot of this newer musics guitar talent i hate to say it, but its taken a plunge <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .

    Dave Mustaine >my hero <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Jimi Hendirx >THE legend
    Kurt. H from metallica. >always rocks
    Styx also, their music is awesome... if you ever go to one of their concerts
    watch their guitar player. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    and everyone in GnR there music and solos have always been a treat to my ears.
    Even AC/DC their music swings. Alot of it is easy. but its so much fun to listen to.

    Um, that was their bass player.

    We're not speaking of who was the best, but what SOLOS are the best.

    Right now, I'm really into Pantera's solo in their cover of "Planet Caravan" its so bluesy and in an odd way, trippy. Really soothing for a 2:18am listen when your just upset with things....
