World Of Warcraft
I've recently been following World of Warcraft, an MMORPG based around the Warcraft series created by Blizzard. Today especially, a friend of mine and I have been doing some reasearch about the game to see if we would really be into it, and what its all about. The more we read about the game, the cooler it seems to us to actually be in a warcraft universe.
Eventually, our research brough us to this thread from a WoW forum site.

QUOTE

Yeah, that info on battle.net is true---we are doing a cover story on WoW in our October issue. It’s 10 pages (I don’t think I’ve mentioned that yet), and will include the remaining playable races. I still have to keep quiet about who and what they are, but I can tell you that it’s at least two new playable races. Woo hoo! Subscribers will start getting their issues any day now—they were mailed out on 8/19, and it will be on newsstands on Sept 2.

The magazine reffered to here is Computer Gaming World.
The fact that the final playable races will be announced is pretty cool, and my friend and I are anxious to see if any of the Undead races, such as the Nerubian spider people, will be playable in WoW.
Then I started wondering who else is looking forward to this game, and what others think of the game. So if you know about the game, and/or have any opinions or anything to say about it, I'd like to hear it.
The official WoW site from Blizzard can be found here, and a very good fansite can be found here.

Yep.
With Blizzard behind the wheel, I believe they'll do all they can to make it as uniquely entertaining as possible.
I haven't been disappointed by these guys once yet, every single title has been a winnar (except for Starcraft: Ghost, I can't believe they won't release this for the PC).
This looks like it could be pretty fun. Too bad there's no way I'm getting a pay per month game, though...

Blizzard believes that the WarCraft world is better suited for an MMORPG than the StarCraft or Diablo universes.; Bill Roper explains how they came to the decision of expanding on the Warcraft franchise:
"When we initially considered stepping into the massively multiplayer genre, we looked at all of our worlds and felt immediately drawn to exploring what we could do with Warcraft. Apart from fantasy being a globally popular setting for role-playing games, we just had so much intellectual content built up that it needed a game of this scope and nature to fully realize everything we had to share with our players." - May 2002
But fans of the other two franchises can take heart that one day the universes of Starcraft and Diablo could become massively multiplayer also as Allen Adham, Vice President, explains:
"We have strong contingents among our gamer-developers that would love to see both StarCraft and Diablo turned into MMORPGs. Both lend themselves to this format and both would undoubtedly make excellent MMORPGs. Who knows what the future holds?" - Oct. 2002

There'll definitely be another Starcraft, Blizzard wouldn't have such a successful franchise go to waste withought getting out at least one sequel.
WoW will definitely be a very solid title, and I am very much liking the idea of making it my first venture into the MMORPG world. And the monthly fees aren't as bad as one would think; After talking to my friends about it, and actually considering it all, $10 a month (on average) really isn't that much to play a solid game that is enjoyable enough.
Although I'm sorry I can't share your sorrow, [A]pe; I have a Gamecube and am set to buy Ghost when its released. Actually, when I read about Ghost in an issue of Game Informer many many months ago, I thought that making it a console-only title was a good move on Blizzards part, because the only other Blizzard game on console was Brood War for the N64, which really wasn't as good as the PC version because it was single player. So it'll be cool for the consoles to have a solid Blizzard title.
They'd both be
I have a very low opinion of subscription-based massively multiplayer ANYTHING. Capitalism ensures that they're going to be designed to squeeze maximum amounts of cash out the playerbase, and the best way of doing that is make everything take a bloody long time for no good reason.
Meh. If I want to point and click to kill stuff and add numbers to a character database, I'll play Diablo II offline. Or maybe just fiddle with Microsoft Access
And of course its capitolism, its the way people are. Money is what makes the world go round, and if these MMORPGs didn't charge a monthly fee, they wouldn't bother to run dedicated servers that hold the worlds and save the characters, and games like EQ would be pretty terrible games. Diablo 2 has only been entertaining for me until I got about 3 separate characters up to about level 70-80. After that, its just cow run, cow run, player kill someone who's has half the levels that I have, cow run, maybe a mephbot while I'm away, more cow runs... And we will find both Saddam and Osama before they release the 1.10 patch.
In addition to the fact that I was an EverCrack fiend.
Where Orcs aren't a shamanistic, spiritual people, they're all about taking human children, and turning them into clothing.
The good old days......
Edit: And come on, is ten bucks really that much of a hassle monthly? Mow a freaking lawn or something! There are always ways to earn money you just have to be looking for them.

I'm more of a Star Wars fan when it comes down to genere instead of the WarCraft series. If it were StarCraft, I would make an exception.
That's not my point. I've heard horror stories about how repetitive, boring, and yet oddly addictive EQ is. The fact that there's a monthly fee is the root of the game's problems, not the problem itself. I'd be quite prepared to pay a regular fee towards maintaining a truly brilliant game. The fact is, if a game demands a regular fee to keep playing it, it is going to ensure that you have to spend vast amounts of time playing it to get anywhere (or to stay level with other characters). Games which reward players who sink all their time and money into them are going to be designed to extract as much time and money as possible. If all a game is interested in is taking your money and forcing you to keep paying up, it's not worth playing.
And really, good PvP isnt hard at all, its just apparently none of these devs has heard of the D&D alignment system (Good, Neutral, Evil, and varying degrees of each). Which would make for perfect PvP.
Good factioned players can only play good, do good deeds, raid evil dungeons.
Neutral people can't be attacked by Good folk unless they become hostile to them for some reason or commit an act that would label them as Evil.
Evil people are the exact opposite of Good players, and can attack Neutral players at will and even other Evil players. Why? Because they are evil darnit, they don't care about alignments!
The above system would be so frikin awsome in a MMORPG, there would be so many options for each side. Alas theres devs who still would complain about alienating those who don't want to participate in combat at all, to which I would have to reply that theres nothing forcing them to be in combat if they chose to stay in Lawful Good cities and towns.

it's very true.
if you can't stand the heat.... geddoutta the kitchen.
.... and stop dry humping.
Well, theres always an expansion. :-)
WoW is going to be THE Everquest killer. Blizzard is going to put SoE to shame. Poor support, little content, rampant gameplay problems. WoW will trump it in every aspect.

As for WoW....sounds good but then I'm not a fan of MMORPGs....sorry,unless there was a Starcraft pack and I had a job I would though
Yes, yes it is.
However, to start with, the game won't take place in all of Middle-earth that is described in the books. At the beginning, players will be confined to Eriador. But that's not so bad anyway.
