I like how everyone carefully ignores my previous post about all the good things GS has done for the world, simply because it contradicts their narrow, limited experience. Welcome to 'Generation Nu'.
Breaking News! Gamespy synthesizes the cure for AIDS! Story inside.
Wow! Gamespy really does do great things for the world!
Speaking of Fileplanet, I've now been waiting nearly 20 minutes in a 6-minute line. WHYYYYY!?!
I really have no qualms with Fileplanet, other than the sometimes-there popups and occasionaly complicatedness (read: inaccurate wait lines). I use it from time to time - mostly just when they're hosting a file I can't get anywhere else. Like this sweet Halo PC video.
Otherwise, long live Fileplanet
I loathe Gamespy, i want the company to die * Check my sig.* Gamespot was a place where i could get my downloads, costed no money to be a member or downloads, then gamespy came along, soon i had to pay for membership, which i thought screw that, i checked the Gamespy sight one day, they were complete fools, they tried to be funny with the character voting battle, which wasn't funny one bit. It's stupid that you should to pay to download something, even the free download is stupid at times, why do i want to spend 5-10 minutes on a 1MB download when i can get it from another site and it'll take 20-30 seconds ? Fileplanet use to be such a great site until GS took over. *Thinks for a second.* Let's make a army to frees FP from GS
I just dont like fileplanet because I have to wait for hours to download, and when I start downloading, I tend to get disconnected (56k) and when I do, I can't restart my downloads....even with download managers!
OK Point #1 343_guilty_spark, Fargo is the GameSpy comedian he says stuff like that. I mean haven't you ever read PlanetFargo? Some of it is very amusing.
Point #2 GameSpy are providing more of a servie to your gaming world then you might like to think. I started server browsing on GameSpy Arcade for Half-Life and I was quite happy with it. It was fast easy and hell a lot better than ASE (Which I have tried) of course it isn't as good as HLSW but if I have a game that isn't compatable with HLSW
Point #3 I like GameSpys journalism
Point #4 (Related to FP because I need this discussion to be) You can find almost any patch for any game on it. That is the mark of a good file area.

QUOTE (343_guilty_spark @ Aug 20 2003, 10:49 AM)

I loathe Gamespy, i want the company to die * Check my sig.* Gamespot was a place where i could get my downloads, costed no money to be a member or downloads, then gamespy came along, soon i had to pay for membership, which i thought screw that, i checked the Gamespy sight one day, they were complete fools, they tried to be funny with the character voting battle, which wasn't funny one bit. Ignore them if you don't like them. If everyone ignores them, the ad companies stop paying them for displaying their ads. If the ad companies stop paying them for displaying their ads, GameSpy Industries Inc. will go bankrupt. If GameSpy Industries Inc. go bankrupt, you win. By completely and utterly ignoring them, you're hitting them right where it hurts, in the money bag. As for the GameSpy Grudge, humour is different for everyone. What I find funny, you may find boring. You don't like the Grudge, so you want GameSpy to DIE? Are you sure you know what you're saying? You want hundreds of people to lose their job just because they don't make with teh funneh? As for Fargo, he is an internet clown. Surely you don't think he's serious about that Dante bit in your sig? Surely you don't think that somebody who's calling his SWG character "Farglik Marsbar" is serious? Surely you don't think that this is an actual excerpt from the bible? Get over it.
So, if you don't like FilePlanet, don't go there. If you don't like GameSpy, don't go there. As I explained, this is the most evil thing you can do to them. However, by taking the battle here, you're potentially telling people who have never heard about them, garnering even MORE INCOME for them! GAH! RUN!
The reason why I refuse to download from Fileplanet (or Gamespy Industries in general) is because they are destroying the online filesharing community in their corporate interests. What I mean is: GSI is hosting all these little fansites and mod pages; basically it is trying to control as many mirrors as it can. It's been very successful so far, most fansites and designer pages are all hosted by Planet... (GSI affiliate).
If you don't think that's true, did you read about the Serious Sam community that got totally banned and ripped apart by Gamespy because they linked to non-FP mirrors and criticized GSI's actions?
Monse, whether the employees love the job or not, it doesn't matter. Employees are pretty much in NO way connected with the actual workings of the company, they are like the mercenaries of the evil dictator, they do what they are paid to do. They got the job bc they like working with games, and they DO work with games, unfortunately the decisions above them are slowly destroying the gaming community!
When GSI controls all the mirrors on the internet, and can afford to give reasonably fast service to people, EVERYBODY will be forced to download from gamespy (either that, or a 56k modem in ... like ... micronesia). When EVERYBODY is downloading from gamespy, what's stopping them from saying "Ok, we changed our rules, now you HAVE to pay to download from here?" all users will be forced to pay gamespy for something that should be free, simply because GSI will control the entire modes of distribution!
(and not to mention supply, gamespy simply has MORE stuff on their servers than others, meaning that if a competitor arises, the competitor will not have as many files as fileplanet.) The only way other companies can have a chance to "combat" fileplanet is to pull the same thing as GSI is doing; which they are (like filshack). Of course, if all the companies have to charge for their files just like gamespy is doing, that's bad for the "consumers" (us) who should be getting these files for FREE. And still, GSI can pull the old monopoly tricks, like trusts, pools, underpricing, kickbacks, etc.
On another note, your singular ban of Fileplanet will accmplish nothing. Millions will still go there, as it hosts quite speedy mirrors, if you can be arsed to wait in the damn line. I sure know I'll go there when I'm feeling especially self-destructive

Mnyeh.
Personally, I love Gamespy. Everything they do, is pretty cool, or funny. I don't read all their articles, or anything like that(because many are on games I don't care about), but I do read the occasional article, and ALWAYS read the daily victim(read it-its funny as hell.) They DO care about games, because frankly, they know more about whats going on in the world of games than ANY PLACE I have EVER seen on the net, or otherwise.
I mean, gamespot I hate because...well, lets just say I cannot stand anything of what they say. I mean, they gave Kingdom Hearts a great score, but all they talked about were its problems. For 2 and a half pages they complained about the camera, probably thinking that a PS2 game would get a patch. Har.
Every other gaming site I've ever been to is usually 2 months behind the times, and frankly, I've yet to see a magazine other than PCG that is 100% into the games. I've read CGM, and it turns out, there are AN AVERAGE of 20 more pages of ads than there are of actual stuff from the mag. And there isn't many other PC gaming mags, and the console ones are BS too.
So really, I have no troubles with Gamespy. I love Gamespy. MonsE, can you introduce me to some of their guys, so I can write articles for them? I really like Gamespy...must....overthrow....Fargo...as....funniest....evar....
Quaunaut, the funny articles and things are in there because they happen to benefit GSI. If those comics and articles didn't get people to visit GSI pages to read them, and looking at the ads and maybe downloading a file or two, they would be pulled like *snap* that fast. So it's nice that GSI provides these articles and fun things, it's just one facet of the company where creativity is actually fostered. I don't want to say that the articles are a 'front' for GSI's dirty plans, because they're not; they just happen to work in the interests of the company, so GSI keeps them. And if you don't think a company is about money, you are simply naive!
Well I'm not sure that everyone here is purposefully bashing the folks that work there. From my understanding, most that are bashing Gamespy are insulting it on the Corporate level - those who pull the strings and make the potentially aggravating decisions. Not the plebian level - those who write the stories, review the games, etc.
Believe me -I would, and Im sure everyone else would as well - thoroughly be happy about having a job a Gamespy.

Secondly they started the whole "pay me to dload free stuff" trend and now all the major Dload sites do it.
I like dloads that give you the save option from the link (like a link from a site that goes directly to a file) no membership no login no nothing.
I'm more than sure all the sites that have a login keep track of what you d-load.
