Why da hate?
I was just wondering, why does everyone hate Fileplanet? I mean, I personally love it. You may have to wait forever, but I'm tellin you, its FAST. I mean, FAST FAST FAST. You just gotta choose the right area to DL from, which so many people download from just "East Coast" when they SHOULD be d/ling from "North East" or something like that. Its not good. But I love it.
I honestly don't see why Fileshack is so much better. I mean, the wait times for that on 2.0 were about....well, on FP it was 200 people in a 150 line, so it was only about 5-10 minutes. On fileshack, I went to get it 2 minutes after 2.0 got out, I waited for half a hour, and got into the FP line at the same time, and made it quick. I dunno.
So, why DO you guys not like it?

I use FP regularly, but i tend to only use it at the times i know it won't be busy. The waiting times for files gets ridiculous, over an hour at times, and when all you're waiting for is a 1mb patch you can't get anywhere else, it's more than frustrating. EDIT: Other than that, FP has high speed servers and a great range of files.
I use them to find filenames, then promptly go to FileMirrors to find a good Mirror link.
Screw waiting, the stuff FileMirrors gets me is just as fast/faster.
"150/150, 600 people in line. Estimated 90 minute wait"
*50 minutes later*
"Illegal operation"
"GAH!!!"
just, bad experiences.

I got in line at Fileshack at 6:02 PM on the day NS 2.0 came out. The wait was 1 minute, as the servers weren't incredibly saturated. The download actually began in less than a minute! I was overjoyed. However, with the recent speed caps (100 kb/s), I'm getting a little angry with it.

That's precisely my problem with it I've waited very long times for certain files (the Planetside first public beta for one: I waited 3 hours only to get the "Page not found" error. Fileshack for me is just much easier - signing in with my name is much easier, finding servers is much easier, it's quicker, it's less crowded (or at least used to be). This is why I, personally complaing about Fileplanet - although it is indeed free, there are manyother free alternatives that work just as well or better for me
it's because, not so long ago, there were purely free-service websites on the internet. not just fileplanet, which my friends tell me was entirely free and liquid smooth with the mirroring.
if you're into emulation, you probably know about a long-disbanded website called www.plasticman.org. that site had countless quality ROM downloads, all free, minimal (i think ZERO) popups, etc. and then it went and became a host of immensely high quality hentai manga, video, and bishoujo games. it wasn't a pr0n site... it was like a library. except with some lewd content. it was easily the best website i had ever visited at the time... you could find any rom there, and if not there, then at its forums. it's a sad **** story that that site and so many others like it, providing free, convenient, efficient service have gone down, or have gone commercial.

Plasticman. God, I wish they were still up.
Best, site, evar. Period. I loved it. I wish they could find a way to start it back up...
Considering that with FP if you want the downloads fast and instant then you pay for it. They very easily could've made the entire site subscription only, but they didn't.
Even X-men 2: Clone Wars ? I can never find it. Great game - it really is.
Annnnyways...., back on topic for me.
If you use it anyways you're just proving that you're critisizing a near essential service that is free.
I was there at an off time once, and the line was someplace a couple tens about one hundred... but the wait time was zero...
so... I.. really am still not sure what to think of that...
currently downloading the Halo preveiw... 85.5 KB/S and rising... so... yeah, they're fast servers.
not only that but FP used to be free, they used to have nine servers. now theyre gotten a few more servers and dedicated 75% of them to the subscribers. so suddenly there are only four servers avaliable to me.
okay heres another thing; i have to log in every time, because my cookies get deleted and they want to know who i am for some reason, just to make sure i am getting enough IGN Partner and Gamespy spam.
so now that theres only four servers for pubbers, think the lines get smaller? no. i think tehy get longer. now lines, i don care, i can let the window sit open all day. but then when it goes and it goes at 3kbps, i get upset.
so i head on over to www.bygames.com and hit downloads and get the file in the blink of an eye. wow. from britain, i get the file 90x as fast? something is wrong about fileplanet.
and lastly, just to make it feel worse, they have to ping and check the lines on every server before you can click one, including the private servers. so i have to wait for it to check the lines on server i wont even use? sorry, there jsut too much advertising for my money on FP for me not to go with a decent mirror elsewhere.
edit: sirus, you keep saying "its free so dont complain"; well, we were just telling you why every other mirror in the world is better, because it IS FREE, and works without lines.

who does THAT??
i just go to less efficient but still 100% free mirrors, or i get it off kazaa, or whatever... i *never* go to fileplanet, and i try to *avoid* going to gamespy for info.
1 - 1/2 later (with 3 retrys due to errors) I get the 3 meg file.
I immediately burned it onto a backup cd, so I never have to go through that hell again.

Where'd you get some of that info? Because its bull.
They have somewhere around 20 servers for the non subs.
They have about 25 for subs.
So there.((this was found OFFICIALLY in a thread on their forums from long, long ago))
And also...have you noticed...sites that are free....go slower than hell...DUM DUM DUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Oh, and why is it people hate fileplanet and not the shack? I mean, shack is worse in every possible way. They don't even tell you HOW LONG your gonna wait. Its just "Your waiting, sorry bub". Ya, that **** me off pretty thick.

thru all that waiting you'd be better off trying to find a fast, immediate service server
It. Was. Awesome.
350+ kpbs downloads, no wait, ever.
I don't work with them anymore, so I usually just use other mirrors.
Also, I hate FilePlanet....
A) Because of the lines. They could easily handle ~1000 people on EACH server, but they limit it then spam you with ads about their premium service.
B) Because it's GameSpy. GameSpy doesn't care about the games, they just care about the money.
C) This is filler.
D) This is also filler.
E) I'm using filler to make my list look longer.
But let's just hate them blindly anyways. MONEY IS BAD!!! SUCCESS IS BAD!!! NS SUCKS ALL WE CARE ABOUT IS GOING RETAIL WE MUST SUCK BAD CAUSE MONEY IS BAD!!!
Well, until some of you get out of your parents basements and into the real world.
ps: And Gree, Netscape is now on version 7.1. Live a little. That's like saying "Ford sucks 'cause they don't make my model T tires anymore!".

Okay, i will agree i havent been to fileplanet in a few months, it was just so bad i gave up, last i remember there were five pubber servers and around ten private ones. hundreds of ads for their subscription service covered my screen, (come on i would rather be watching real ads making them real money than these boring buy gamespy arcade now ads)
the , i didnt care, 20 minutes to two hours was normal, but i could wait that. what really got me was that it wasnt fast, free mirrors give me fifty to a hundred kByte/sec, and after this wait, FP gives me between 2 and 15 kByte/sec. its simply not worth my time, when there are better alternatives.
When I read about this "wait in line" system, I loved the idea. As a modem user at the time, it would mean that fewer people would be hammering the same server, and we'd all get decent download speeds. I personally remember trying to download the Quake 3 demo from FilePlanet pre-wait-in-line, and got speeds approximately 80 bytes per second (not even kb/sec!).
However, for the first week, it was rather horribly supported. If enough people were waiting in line, suddenly on FilePlanet's end it would think that a negative number of people were waiting, the average wait was a random trash number, or perhaps a mix of both. The result was that everyone waiting in line would get kicked out and have to start from scratch.
I posted to their forums, and at the time was praised by my "opposition" in the disagreement for putting forth some of the most logical, level-headed arguments there. Put simply, I said that I didn't care if I had to see a whole slew of advertisements while waiting in line; FilePlanet needs the money to maintain itself, so it's only fair -- but only so long as the line system works. The poor support was quite literally forcing people to pay for the subscriber service. I said that we should all wait until demand for the files goes down; if FilePlanet shapes up, all is well, if not, tell your friends about FileShack.
My account was removed from their forums and my IP was banned because they suspect I work for FileShack, and an absolute fool has since made an account with the same name and for a time was defacing my reputation online.
When I do download off FP, like if there are no other mirrors, though, the servers are really really fast. I get speeds of around 150 to 170 kb/s off FP, which is good even for my connection. But with speeds that great, I really don't see why they don't just let in more people, maybe for a slight sacrifice of speed, but ultimately get the job done with less hassle and less frustration.
i guess, monsieurevil, marik doesn't like ford because the cars he bought from it all broke down, and one exploded while he was in it. and somebody else stole his new one.
