i like veil, but I think mineshaft definitely looks the best.

Not that big a fan of lost though, it's just too square.

Let's not even get into origin...

Veil seems abit plainish but still the best 2.0 map to play and bast (viaduct)

Veil is a great map. Looks similar to eclipse, is it supposed to be located on the same space station or something?

Origin is my other favourite of the new maps, I love origin.

Kickass work guys, keep it up.

erm... veil has some very interesting one-way hallways. It really felt like it was lacking in the vents department... Oh, and the siegable-from-base double res node? hrm :/

*hugs his KFS* Mwa!

(Coincidentally, Veil and Eclipse are my absolutely favorite maps.)

ns_mineshaft is awfully unbalanced

I have yet to see marines win in that map

resource nodes are too far from the marine start, and the few ones that are around are very difficult to defend
not to mention its way too dark - even my NS standards

Can't remember which map this is. It is the one with Alpha Continuem. I was dead and looking at a comrade in a room with a res point over a very deep pit. I turned my view, thinking by hitting that window, that it would zoom in. Instead, it gave me a view outside the ship. I could see the background... Something in the back ground stuck out... The letters S-T-F-U. I laughed.

ns_veil is a very nice map. I noticed it was similar to ns_eclipse as well, and I thought that was pretty cool considering Eclipse is one of my fav maps. And the consistency in style makes the story a bit more believeable, as if Veil and Eclipse really were in the same area.

As for ns_mineshaft, I had a bit of a struggle with it in the beginning, but I've been getting used to it more and more. Its not such a bad map, my experiences have been fairly varying with it. Most often marines take Tram Tunnel Hive, then they can creep towards the dual nodes and siege it. Or vice versa.

yes, veil is nice like eclipse

I like origin as well, great feel in its various places, I would work on improving that feel

woe for bast, come back relic25!

EDIT: **** I'm sleepy. And I just took a 3 hour nap cuz of the Northeast blackout

Yeh Veil is very cool. I love the lighting.

I think KungFuSquirrell has made the two best maps for people new to NS cause they're relatively easy to get your head around.

The genius is both these maps still rock when you get the hang of them and you no longer a n00b @ NS... which is quite a feat!

It would seem to me KungFuSquirrell's specifically focused on making maps that are new player friendly... most people said back in the 1.00 days that Eclipse was their favourite map when they started.

Keep it up... mappings hard... all the NS mappers have done an awesome job!

I don't care for Veil. Way too plain. I mean, most hallways are just straight, smooth and featureless. People in Lunix SunnyD call it 'Eclipses b***ard child'.

It feels less like a space station, or a place where people dwell, and feels more like it was MADE for NS, like how Unreal Tournament levels are made for the Tournament...
• EighteenTwelveEighteenTwelve Join Date: 2003-08-10 Member: 19366Members
I think NS has the most ambient maps of any game I've ever played, with the exception of AvP.
• ScarletPhoenixScarletPhoenix Join Date: 2003-08-06 Member: 19133Members
I don't get the ns_origin hatahs, it's really an excellently crafted map with unique areas. Except maybe Vent hive, but every NS map has to have a Vent hive that's bland and featureless. It's an edict by Flayra, or so I heard

Now, if you have some sort of balance complaint, that'd be something to talk about...

One of my favorite things about Veil is the names of all of the rooms. Most maps are really redundant (cargo anyone?) but this one is really unique. Also some of the monitor graphics are really cool, and it makes for a great feel ingame. I know how hard it is to make a good map (I have tried but failed horribly,) so great work KFS!

Orgin... If i could figure my way around that map I am definately sure I would love it immensely. Problem is, I forget where I'm going. But as for the ore scanner and lava flows. Actually, I have one of my fondest 2.0 memories on this map. Lava catwalk is a gorge's wet dream. skulk up on top of the cat walk and you can lay down large amounts of OCs and DCs, making it the perfect resupply place depending on marine movements. I held off 5 hmg HAs there. It was amazing.
• avaxxavaxx Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18910Members, Constellation
Veil's my favorite of all the new maps but uh, one thing I hate is that catwalk in marine start. I've played at least 5 games where aliens have controlled all the map but marine start and the marines have just sat up there with GLs/HMGs and done nothing but launched nade after nade after nade. Otherwise, <3 the map.

Origin is very alien-unfriendly. Almost all of the hallways are very wide, open hallways with few obstacles, and they tend to have MANY MANY MANY blocky stupid things on the walls/ceiling, making skulks lives tough. I just played a few games in there, and I was very surprised at how hard it is for aliens to get around. There aren't any vents that go anywhere strategic (Like the vent in Hera that drops you right outside marine spawn), the vents just kinda avoid hallways and put you somewhere else. There's no real tactical advantage to attacking from them.

As I said, almost all of the halls are very wide, very open, and very easy to blow critters out of. Attacking the marine spawn is suicide, with those HUGE **** OPEN DOORWAYS and not a SINGLE obstacle in the room.

Most of the res nodes are in wide open areas, allowing you to VERY easilly set up a little turret defense system, and with the lack of obstacls, taking out the turrets is very tough.

It's like 11th hour, just darker and much better looking.

On the plus side, it is easier on fades, except when you fall in the molten metal.

I can't say I've seen many marine wins on this map, but it's a lot of work and frustration for the aliens when you try to attack them and you're cut down by marines 100 meters away.

yeah veil is pretty plain, so is eclipse, but it's not offensive and the gameplay is good

origin is kinda rough but it's my fav map
ventilation hive esp needs work but the ambient noise there is excellent
maybe a bigger biodome, and an even better furnace than furnace ^^

I truly hope bast is not dead - it's good enough to be a level dedicated to some single player game.

*ahem* I've yet to hear anyone call it that. In fact, every time veil comes up, I hear a lot of... "Yay! VEIL!" "Woo!" "KFS OWNZ J00!" And not just from me, either.

My first game of 2.0 was on mineshaft. And marines kicked butt with Heavy armour, shotties, turrets and phase gates.

I thought origin was the best, followed by lost, mineshaft, and veil. Veil looks like eclipse. Origin has a lot of cool things like the hologram, cool location names, (how many "cargos" and "vents" do maps need?) and just a unique feel. I still think bast is the best however.

I think the most visually appealing new map is mineshaft, and I see about 40% marine win ratio (which isn't bad for marines in 2.0). Origin is awesome, but there are SOOOOOOO many places you can't go as onos. On a side note, you can barely get out of the hives as an onos because halls and vents are way too small, which makes the idea of only gestating in the hive (in 2.01c) even more ridiculous . Now, I have to say I don't see lost played all that often on the servers I frequent, and veil is kind of low too. I like viel alot because it's like eclipse. No single team has the advantage.

EDIT: I play on vet clan servers mostly, which explains higher-than-usual marine win ratios
• typicalskeletontypicalskeleton Join Date: 2003-02-25 Member: 14011Members
I really don't like bast. marine spawn is screwed up, IMO.

veil is one of my favorites, though. yeah, it is kind of straight-forward.. but that's not neccesarily a bad thing.

NS maps are the best HL engine-based maps I've ever seen. I don't know how they can run as well as they do with the textures/effects they use.

really great stuff.
