Sorry, I need to winge.
Ok...feeling a little cheesed off as I really think the game play in the old version was better. I can't see me taking to this new version as it just doesn't have the same quality action. Let me just list a few major down sides and upsides.

Downsides
--------------------------------------------
Jet packs kickin really weakly in when you rehit the jump after a slight plumet. It just doesn't have the same handling.

Onos move to slow and devour is too strong...simple answer is to swap charge with devour.

HA are too tough.

Electrifying rt's and tf's is rubbish. Killing RT's and tf's gave aliens something to aim for if marines were winning. By doing this, the marines have more time to take more rts instead of securing them. This takes more strategy out the game.

What happened to all the doors? Not that important but it added to the fun when you hid behind one as a skulk and lept as the marine opened it.

The roofs are far to inventive...jp have a lot harder time trying not to be devoured/munched due to irregular and lower ceilings.

Cloaking shouldn't affect OC's. Wheres the fun in a marine running to his destination only to be killed by invisible stuff. If he could see it then at least he has the chance to change his mind or to fire back. It ruins the whole attempt at stealth by a marine. Again another strategy killer. Sensories should be more expensive but tougher so there wont be so many.

It seems to come down to Aliens killing marines to take ground or marines killing aliens to take ground. There is no real strategic attacking, gorilla style, hitting specific targets. Now they are electrified. It has steered the game in a completely different direction and plays too different to the last version. Unfortunately, its gonna be hard work finding an 1.04 version server to play on.

The lack of any sort of orders to be given out from the gorge. If marines are newbies then it doesn't matter as much as newbies on aliens since the comm can give them procise destinations and come back to the when they report back. New Aliens on the other hand will just get themselves lost and get bored unless their are quite a few decent players on.

The game seems to be designed for people who know what their doing. The majority of games will be played on pubs where some times virtually everyone can be new. Ths means it goes on for ages and its not get the same addictive game play as 1.04 meaning its gonna lose popularity over time.

Turrets and OC's...when something can be built in such volumes as they can now, why make them so stupidly accurate. It makes a base totally unaccessable unless you are HA or Onos...then thats not for very long. There has to be a chance a player can run into a base/hive and perform a miracle taking a major structure down. If you can even get close to a base then it makes walking about pointless unless you take an rt then the comm electrifies it and you just sit there twiddling your thumbs.

The new maps have horrific lighting and some of the textures are poor quality and in some places look like puke.

Upsides
---------------------
The comm console. The nav control over the marines is very well done.

Blink is awesome (if a little too powerful).

A lot of marine facilities are simliar to the older counterparts.

Babble has gone...although it was good fun, it was also too silly.

Bile bomb given to gorge is also great ince because of its strength it needed a draw back. n this case the gorge is putting himself on the line.

They kept Lerk spikes. The Lerks spikes make up for not having fade rockets.

Stomp is good. Paralysis was a little under used since if you were that close, you would just smack em (unless it was a HA). Beautiful animation for it too.

Theres a lot more but its harder to mention the good things when cheesed off.

...Flame away.

Does anyone know if they did any beta testing with complete newbies as I get the feeling that it was only played by the Vets and that would explain why its no longer such a pub friendly game?

If everyone knows what they are doing and follows orders to the letter, then you will end up wit ha game that doesn't work well with a mixture of skill levels.

I mean, do you expect to get the twist ofthe game after one day of playing? Play a bit more and find the counters to everything

I find some of your complaints ridiculous. You say that onos are too slow, Devour is too powerful, and HA is too powerful. Thing is, Devour is the anti-HA. If the HA's are killing you, you need an onos. The slow speed of onos is what balances out devour, in that basic marines can out-run the onos and avoid getting devoured. There is also nothing wrong with roofs being "far to(sic) inventive". And with teamwork, you still can take out electrified things. Remember that attack called "heal spray"?
  • ForlornHopeForlornHope Join Date: 2003-08-01 Member: 18675Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow, WC 2013 - Gold
I got the play of the last version in less than a day and I'm not saying that I don't know how to play this version. Im saying that the game play is too different to the last version and unfortunately its not in a way that I like as much.

Again, ytou are assuming that team all know what they are doing. Since public servers are where most the games are played, if a gorge is heal spraying an rt then its likely you'll get had by the marines since they have nav points where as you'll be calling for skulks as backup and half the time you wont get them.

Take a look at the ceiling all around the new style "caged". Its like an assault course...and you do get assaulted since the jet pack has huge problems kicking back in when you rehit the jump to get lower. You end up having to land and rehit jump.

Onos having a lot of armour and health often go in take a load of damge and then have to walk away slowly (assuming no 3rd hive for charge) to the nearest goge/dc. How utterly boring! Because you have to wait to be healed up as well as taking a year to get there. Devour not only is pointless against non-HA's...it would be much better to give them charge so they can get about and fight the non-HA's earlier on. Then they can work up to devour for when its needed and the heavies come in.

Maybe you should play the game for more then 48 hours before you tell the dev team whats wrong with the game? Dont say you 'got the play in less then a day' thats simply not possible. Most of your observations are trival. Play the game for a month or more, allow people to adapt to the new play sytle. Then come and tell us what you think is wrong with it.

heh sorta like how cloaking everything in the area...and standing in the middle of a corridor waiting for all of the marines to run into your devour and bites then regen back to full health again, and safely redeem back to base if you die for some reason?

The one problem I got with it atm is that, if the marines really wanted to they could lock down a hive with loads of turrets and just sit there till they got bored...the only decent projectile for aliens at 2 hives is the gorge bile bomb but would get destroyed in seconds if rines just stood in the base aiming for aliens. Even a hoarde of Onos would get owned, and any turrets they did get down could be rebuilt easily. Lets not forget any aliens getting close to the turret factory being electrified. Thats all so far, dont really wanna comment on anything else as it's too soon.

Hes right, I will agree that 2.0 has a steeper leanring curve then 1.0-1.04 did.

I saw a lot of CS, TFC, and DoD players become very frustrated at cloacked Ocs etc.
Or being a bad comm etc.

Nothing to worry about just give the game a chance and get some expirience. There is a lot more involved here to have to worry and think about then just killiing other team off or touching a flag.

Dont feel bad or angry b/c you think "you are doing poorly so the game must be poor. " Everyone was new once. Just stick together and try new stuff out. Dont let your "E-Ego" get in the way or anyone elses for that matter.

In fact with the new version and such a large amount of new players i was amazed to see so many people actualy taking objectives in squads of 4, 5, or even more. NS takes A LOT of Teamwork, especialy for marines. Keep that in mind and you will see NS is a much better and deeper game.

This is so obvious I would expect a blind cow to do it. It was the first real day of 2.0 today and practically everyone on Roob's was doing this without prompting (further supporting my theory that CD required servers always have decent players).

The balance and counter system evident in the makeup of this game is outstanding, not to mention the opportunity cost inherent to the kharaa upgrade structure.

Take the Onos as an example. Slow, powerful, devour is a fairly hard counter to HA, but they are large targets. They are also ideally suited to destroying buildings. To counter their slowness, you can use celerity. However, without regen an onos is ineffective when far from a healing source, and without carapace, the onos' large size makes it easy prey for skilled shotgunners. Knowing your enemy's tactics will allow you to choose the upgrades best suited to battle - and you won't know their tactics without scouts. Which basically puts the effectiveness of the Onos into the hands of the skulks, and proper effective teamplay, which is what the game is supposed to be about.

p.s. turret farms are nature's way of telling you that you shouldn't let marines have lots of res and hold a crucial position for a long time.

Hah, when I commed my marines refused to shoot cloaked buildings. They went into the hive location, I scanned, they shot the hive, scan finishes and they just stop shooting. Until I scan again.

Or they walk to an rt and I tell them it's cloaked. They try to walk on the node, but can't and just stay stunned in front of it. Any begging for them to shoot it from my part were pointless; until I scanned... hilarious tbh

So basically youre annoyed because you die more often because you arnt accustomed to new stuff e.g. cloaking.

Are you the type who enjoyed jp hmg rushing as marine every round? Again , and again and again?

That said, NS 2 has become a better clan game, but as for pubbies, hard to tell yet, cos no one really knows what they are doing.

The only problem I have is the pop-up menu
    I liked the old one..
Everything seems backward on this one
Look at Ready Room and Eject Commader.. why were they switched.. I know a few people have gone to the readyroom when trying to eject the commander..
Is there a way to get the 1.04 style one back?
I think I'll get used to this.. but everything is reversed.. no more automatic actions for getting the upgrades..
I did have it down to automatic.

I'm just gonna say this once, because it answers your whole friggen topic. I'm dearly sick of everyone bashing 2.0 because they 'pwnt' on 1.04 with their JP/HMG.

    2.0 IS ABOUT TEAMWORK!!!!!!!!!

If there is a turret farm, use the gorges bile bomb. Having marines shoot at you? Umbra the gorge with your lerk. They are getting in close? Get skulks to help protect them. Using GL's? Use the lerks spikes and gas to take em out. Its about TEAMWORK. Jetpacks are now JUMP PACKS. Get used to it, you cant hover around a hive, BOO HOO. Onos isnt all powerful anymore? Jeez, might need some HELP now. You cant rambo anymore, WHAT DOES NO ONE UNDERSTAND?!?!??!

Jeez, I'm venting on your venting topic. And I'm venting on YOU.

    Time for my vent.

How, with it being just slightly over 24 hours since the release, can people claim to know the game is unbalanced? I've seen just about equal wins on both sides. The only complaint I somewhat can see is the game length as most games I've played have gone about 2 hours. But, I feel that time will decrease immensely as strategies evolve. Hell, balance will increase as strategies evolve. Give the game more than a day for the love of God. So basically.... I need to stop reading the forums for a week or so until the whining becomes educated

Bwahahahaaa! Now that's some delicious irony!

I thought this thread was going to be about that darn vent in ns_mineshaft that lerks sit in eternally sniping the marines in the double res room. I hate that vent passionately!!!!! Well there you go. The game is about "team work"...theres such a think as "too much". Its not gonna happen on so many public servers. Its gonna cause a lot of would-be good players to not bother with ns due to the irritating prats you get there. Its also going to cause a lot of cliqueyness among the established players. To be honest, I have found the only decent games to be with clans. This makes the bit-of-fun public server games, extremely agonising and usually completely one sided.

I have played it enough now to know whats what, and I know for a fact that the only games worth playing are not on public servers.
